Weekend WatchAlong: Bhangra Paa Le! 7:30am Chicago time (8:30 NY)

Genevieve’s birthday pick! Which does look generally seem fun and watchalong friendly and all of that. But also, I haven’t gotten a HUGE number of RSVPs, so this is one of those weeks where I will give it 15 minutes and then call it if no one else has shown up.

Bhangra Paa Le

It’s on Netflix, it’s not that long, it looks super fun!

at 7:30 Chicago time I will comment “And PLAY” and we will all start simultaneously and then carry along from there!

      • Just looked her up, she started acting in 2005 and has always played Grandma’s. I love that, presumably she was already at least 60 and went ahead and started a brand new career.

          • Found an interview! She says that she worked in serials and could have done much more, but then her husband died and she had to take a break from acting to raise her daughters. Her first film role wasn’t until 2005. And she got a bunch of awards for Vicky donor at 75! She also says that the crew is always very nice to her, and her arthritis is so bad she can’t really stand for long periods. So they always work around her so she can do her scenes sitting down.

          • That may be true that her first film role wasn’t until 2005 but she was in Mahabharat and Ramayana from what I remember and many other Doordarshan serials we watched as a kid. Mostly because it was the only channel we and most families had unless they wanted to pay for premium channels, which we couldn’t afford.

          • Interesting. So waht she is saying is that TV work is something she could do as a single parent, but not film work. I guess that makes sense? More 9 to 5, no location shooting, etc.

          • Yes. And she could do side roles where she made steady income while still being there for her kids. I just found a interview also where it seems she was a theater actress and always lived in Delhi. Makes sense who she would be more interested in doing series where she didn’t have to move to Mumbai.

  1. My grandparents, both sides, got married absolutely last minute days before my grandfather’s shipped out. But I know there was a whole debate, worldwide, about whether it was more honorable/sensible to get married in a hurry or to wait until he is safely back. I wonder how much difference it made that in America wives got a an extra stipend? So you would actually be doing something for your girlfriend by marrying her, something more than leaving her as just engaged?

    • I bet that extra stipend DID make a difference. Getting married before shipping out would also give the soldiers some extra incentive to come back, but then maybe the army WANTS people to recklessy risk their lives.

  2. I knew there would be an issue with the intermural rules! Also, coach needs to get on the game of spying out the competition. They should have had spies watching the other teams and already known about her long ago.

  3. OH, the Bhangra colleges are in competition!!! Their love is thwarted from the start! A regular Romeo and Juliet of the fictional Bhangra Dance World.

  4. Sunny of the present just doesn’t have the joy of dancing that Sunny of the past has. Why exactly did he do that? It is so much more fun to watch joy.

  5. Mr T has lost interest and gone downstairs to play hoppy bunny with husband but Baby K is very focused on this movie!

  6. I bet if I youtube Bhangra dance competions I will NOT find anything as awesome as the dance competition depicted in this film.

    • That would be like them getting married and he took her name. It would emasculate him and he would never be able to go home again.

  8. Once again, I like that the costumer doesn’t overly sexualize Rukshar. I get a little bored seeing naked women on the screen all the time. She is so pretty in her loose long sleeve shirts.

    • No, he isn’t likeable. NOT CLASSY. But his grandfather was classy, Sunny of the past would have met her and been happy for her win. Sunny of the past is SO MUCH BETTER!

    • No. He is awful! Because it is all about him and his family’s honor and blah blah blah. Tortured young men can only think about themselves. It’s all about their journey.

  9. Sorry. Had to step away from the computer for a bit. Two comments.

    1. I am really glad Mr. T missed the war scenes. He gets really really upset when anyone on TV get hurt and then it’s hard to get him out of that.
    2. I love the relationship between Rukhsar and Sheeba!!!! She is so much more sympathetic than Sunny. His petulance is really annoying me.

  10. I will give Sunny credit, his modern tears over his loss are very believable in a Ranbir Kapoor based personality.

  12. I like how at home, he is in the same setting as the past, but the colors are different. Even silly dance movies are filmed so beautifully these days.

    • Let’s face it, he messed up with Rukshar, she deserves better. She would be a happier person without him. IN FACT any female would be happier without Sunny in his current modern day state.

        • Yes, cities are dens of evil that change people and make them soulness. Everything real is in a village. Marry your next door neighbor and ignore the draw of all museums and the arts and well, actually earning money, and you will be happier.

  14. In England they don’t actually say Shut Up as much as they do in India. And in America, it is really just a no go.

    • Agreed. And credit to the actor for showing the change so well. This is what I think is the difference between watching Tiger dance vs Vicky and Hrithik. Tiger might be more athletic but it never feels like he is dancing with joy! On the other hand, anything Vicky and Hrithik do is just so happy and fun!
