Life Update! If You Care About My Life Stuff….

This is one of those posts that’s not for the casual reader, but if you are a long time reader who is interested in the non-Indian Film part of my world, UPDATE!

I’m trying to bury this very very far into the post for the sake of privacy/security, but I also want to post about it because I need moral support. So here is a random SRK photo for further space filling:

(he met John Cena???)

So here’s the thing, I am deeply deeply unhappy in my job and actively looking to work somewhere else. See why I had to hide this down down down in the middle of a post?

I’ve got over a decade of experience in Customer Success at an SaaS, if any of y’all have leads for me, or tips, or advice, I would appreciate it VERY VERY MUCH. And also, this is part of the reason I’ve slowed down on posting a little bit, I’m spending time re-writing my resume and blah blah instead of blogging. But SHHHHHH! It’s a secret!!! But only sort of! Ugh, I can sense the more legalistic of you reading this and freaking out and going “Margaret! Take down the post! It’s too dangerous!” But I like telling you all things! And I need moral support and I can’t get it from many places in Real World because of the whole “secret” thing.

  1. Iam so sorry . There’s a facebook community called Network Capital which is a very good professional networking community, you can post there for any advice or seeking a job. It has primarily Indian members only but I am sure they will help.

  2. I don’t know your domain, but there’re some openings in Inovalon for SaaS products in health care domain. Some are remote, some require work from MD, PA, MN or FL

  4. Sorry to hear this! My work has turned grim lately too, though I’m sticking it out for the moment. I’m glad you’re taking action for yourself, though, taking that step is one of the hardest parts. I’ve quit a few jobs and been laid off once, no regrets. The looking for a job part is not fun and you have to take care of yourself and keep your spirits up, but…you can do better. It will make a meaningful difference when you find a better situation without all the baggage you’re carrying in this one. And you have a pretty good job market too, stroke of luck. Wishing you courage and all good fortune. My only advice, if you haven’t done this in a while, is that everything is more online now so it’s worth zhuzhing up your LinkedIn profile, using your online writing and publishing skills to think about how to match your experience to what people will be searching for.

    • Thank you! Your encouragement really helps. What kills about the online stuff is that it means my current employer can ALSO see everything I am doing, so I’m riding this tricky balance of how aggressive I can be without tipping him off. LinkedIn has 3 options, “not looking” “open to work but only visible to registered recruiters” and “open to work visible to everyone”. And I can’t pull the trigger on that last option because my boss is a linkedin friend and would get a notification right away. I wish they had a tool to hide from certain contacts or something.

      • Yes, that part is tricky! Though mostly I think people will find your profile once you’ve applied somewhere so I wouldn’t worry too much about the public status. Worth putting energy into deciding what kinds of positions you want to apply for, being diligent about working away at applications at a regular pace, and then trusting that the right match will find you (which means steeling your nerves to all the non-responses and not matches). It’s tough to put yourself out there, but I bet you’ll find that all your years of work have given you valuable experience that will be useful in some better setting.

    • Emily – I am so sorry you are in same boat as Margaret. If I can help when you decide to look for a new job, definitely reach out.

Also, on a separate note, to cheer you up, did you see Brothers Sun? I know you love Michelle Yeoh as much as I do! I don’t even like gross blood stuff, but I enjoyed the series a lot! I just fast forwarded through the gory parts.

      • Thanks, filmikudhi! Work has been stressful for a couple of years but it just amped up again. I’m coping for now. We’re at the part of the project where we slowly start checking things off and can begin to see the end of it. I’ve been mostly able to protect my team.

Anyway, TV is more fun. I missed Brothers Sun but thank you so much for the rec, it’s definitely going on my list! I just finally started watching Heeramandi. So soapy but I forgot how stunning Bhansali visuals are.

        • I am glad you were able to protect your team and it sounds like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The visuals in Heeramandi are incredible and Aditi Rao Hydari is just AMAZING! But other than that, I was yelling at the TV (and texting my sister in all caps) a lot while watching it.

Brother’s Sun does have some gross parts. Especially in the first few episodes. Just a fair warning in case your kids are also watching it. But they are easy to fast forward. I am also a wuss though and cannot stand anything remotely gross!

  5. I was told that in the job market right now, find a job and then look for people in your extended network to help get you a referral. That the recruiters aren’t looking at applications much because they are getting thousands

    • Ready for my most valuable connection? My sister’s college roommate’s boyfriend is now married to Zuckerberg’s little sister, and they were all in the same dorm in college. If only there was a box on applications for “I met the founder’s brother-in-law 20 years ago and he had an unfortunate haircut”!

I think I also met Zuckerberg’s sister? But she didn’t make an impression on me at the time. If I’d known I could use her for a job 2 decades later, I would have been a lot more friendly!

  6. I can’t believe I missed this post. I am so sorry you are having a hard time at work. I will text you shortly about some job ideas and referrals.

Weirdly, I have literally been doing the same thing you have this last week. I came across a couple job posts that looked interesting and the fact that I am interested tells me something, so I just spent the last week updating my resume and talking to people.

While I trust that you have a great handle on your own resume, if you need a second set of eyes, I am happy to look over it and provide edits/input.

    • That’s where I was about 4 years ago! Finding myself browsing listings. But then things got better and I didn’t do anything.

Question: what does it mean about my relationship with Albie Dog when I find myself browsing dog adoption listings?

  7. I had to google what SaaS is, so my area of work is very different from yours. I cannot offer practical advice but I hope other comments have been helpful. I’ve never been in your exact situation but I know how daunting it is to search through listings. Hang in there!

  8. Haven’t commented in a long while, but I follow DCIB, sometimes saving up a bunch for days-long deep dives. I write novels for a living, self-pubs in the beginning, and now for a legit publisher. I say this only to show that I know a bit about the craft. I read your book and loved it! You are a wonderful writer, so please, while you re looking for a job, why not write another book? Your alternative plot scenarios, film analyses, personal musings…everything that travels from your brain to your keyboard is well thought out and enjoyable to read. Just my two cents. Good Luck!
