Dilwale continues to climb at the Overseas Box Office

And only like $200 of that is due to me!  According to bollywoodhungama, Dilwale is now at #7.  It is coming up fast on Chennai Express, at #6, and My Name is Khan at #5.  Remember also, Chennai Express ran for a full 6 weeks overseas, and Dilwale hasn’t even crossed the 2 week mark yet.

It’s also interesting looking at the global box office rankings, versus India and global combined.  In the global, the top 5 are PK, then Dhoom 3, followed by Bajrangi Bhaijaan, 3 Idiots, and My Name is Khan.  In the India and global combined list, it is still PK, but with Bajrangi Bhaijaan next instead of Dhoom 3, followed by Baahubaali (not even on the global list), then Dhoom 3, then Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (#9 overseas), and finally Chennai Express is #6.  My Name is Khan isn’t even on it.  And Dilwale hasn’t made it (yet).

It’s always hard to tell how much of the overseas profit makes its way back to the filmmakers, since they usually sell off their distribution rights.  However, in this case, we know how much it is, since Shahrukh opened a Red Chillies distribution branch just for this film.

He must have also known that the majority of the money would be coming from overseas, as this same imbalance has been present in all his releases since Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and was particularly noticeable with the last SRKajol film, which the diaspora flocked to while those at home were a little more neutral.

So, again, this goes back to my theory from yesterday, that lackluster reviews, local protests, and a tepid box office were all expected, and were balanced against the guaranteed pay-day from overseas which will go to fund the next few Red Chillies productions, which are Shahrukh’s true passion projects.

  1. So, does this mean we’re going to have a lot of depressing SRK films in our future? (I remember a discussion of Woody Allen’s movies where someone said, “I liked the funny ones but this new stuff is boring.”)

  2. Yes it does! Doomed heroes, realistic violence, big social statements, all that good stuff! And then after that, he is supposed to co-star with baby-faced Alia Bhatt, which is the one I am really dreading. He’s too old for her!
