Box Office Update: Airlift Continues to Soar, KKHH3 Finds Its Level

Bollywoodhungama comes through again!  For both Airlift and KKHH3, they have updated figures as of today.  And things look awesome for Airlift, but not so great for KKHH.

Of course, that’s just comparing them to each other, let’s see how they look when compared with more appropriate contemporaries.

Apparently, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 has been promoted as India’s first “porn-com”.  Ewwwwww!  What a gross idea! And who’s going to see it?  I mentioned yesterday that maybe it is only doing well in the UK because it is picking off the rebellious teenage audience.  Which is great in England, with all those Hindi speaking rebellious youth.  But what about in India?  Or America or Canada?  The diaspora makes up a much smaller proportion of the population in those places, more likely to go to a film with their family than with their many desi friends from high school.  And in India itself, who is going to brave enough to be seen in public buying a ticket for this gross gross movie?

Well, the people who drove Grand Masti to the 100 crore club in just a few weeks!  Looking back to 2013, Grand Masti made over 40 crore in its first weekend alone.  KKHH3 is at 38.41 crore now, on the Tuesday after it’s release.  So it’s not doing as well as the most successful Adult film of all time, but it’s in the same range.  Which, gosh-darn it, means there will probably be more low-budget super stupid sex movies coming out.  Blech!  Oh, and it also means we can now say “Tusshar Kapoor doesn’t have the drawing power of Viviek Oboroi, Ritiesh Deshmukh, and Aftab Shivdasani combined”, which is a sentence that somehow manages to insult them all equally.

Meanwhile, Airlift is holding very strong.  Dropped to 10 crore in India on Monday, a work day, but went back up to 17 crore on Tuesday, a holiday.  It has climbed steadily every day (except Monday), I expect it to keep steady at around 10 crore for the rest of the week, then go back up to 12-15 crore next weekend and stay there.  It’s already broken through 100 crore easily, if it keeps steady like this for another week, it might hit 200 crore.  And that’s with minimal screens in the overseas markets.  If I were the producers, I would be kicking myself right now for not sending more prints to America, Canada, and the UK.

On twitter, “Airlift Again” is trending right now in India, and that’s what the box office seems to be showing as well.  This kind of steady slight growth on (comparatively) few screens is more indicative of repeat viewers than of new viewers.
