None of these things have anything to do with each other, but none of them are really worth their own post either, so I am going to combine them all to have a decent sized post.
First, Tusshar Kapoor is a father! The Jeetendra Kapoor family has a grandchild! Yay! My first reaction to the news was “wait, when did he get married?” But, nope! He is a single father, no wife around. The baby was born by surrogate.
I don’t know the ins and outs of the Indian adoption laws, but I assume it is hard for a single father to adopt, because it is hard for a single man to adopt everywhere. And I know it was super hard for Sushmita to adopt as a single parent, and I assume it would be even harder for a man. So, this means that if Tusshar wanted to be a father, surrogacy is a wonderful chance for him. I know surrogacy has been gaining acceptance just based on the way it has started showing up among celebrities (Aamir, Shahrukh), but somehow I never put it together that it might be the best way for a single father in India to have a child. This is a delightful and unexpected result! Also, Karan Johar was one of the first to congratulate him on twitter, which, considering Karan’s openly spoken desire for a family, makes me wonder if he might start thinking about this path.
Next, some minor box office news, Udta Punjab is dropping a lot in the second week. It still did respectable business, about 50 crore, just in the first week. But a big Punjabi film came out this week, Sardarji 2, which is biting into the Udta business in the northern territories and among the Punjabi diaspora, which is where it was doing so well last week. Not all the global figures are available as of now, but it is dropping off a lot in the UK and Australia and New Zealand. I’ll be interested to see how it does in America, where the Punjabi market doesn’t dominate as much as in the other countries. It was doing phenomenally last week, and I wonder if the drop will be as drastic as it was in other places, or if a larger portion of the American audience was non-Punjabis and therefore will be less affected by Sardarji 2‘s release.
And finally, Sultan cleared with no cuts! But it was given a UA certificate because of the fight scenes. Normally this wouldn’t be news, but after all the stuff with the censor board lately, a film sliding through with no problems is news. Oh, and also, the song trailer for the title song is out now.
