Sanjay is the big news. I already put up my birthday post for him, now the news is filtering out from his birthday press conference. But, there’s also new news about Emraan’s tiny little son, and some sad news from Rajshri films.
Sanjay had a press conference in the lobby of his building (his neighbors must hate that) in which he was cheerful and calm and open in his answers. Also, there was cake! All around, a good time.
Rediff did their usual wonderful job boiling it down to the pertinent points. Most of all, Salman! The media has been trying to build up a feud between them ever since Sanjay got out of jail, since they haven’t been photographed together openly. Sanjay says, “Salman is my younger brother, has always been and will always be. God has given him all the grace, he has got good success and all his cases are over but I request the media to not make it an issue.” He also added that Salman called to wish him on his birthday, and he called Salman to congratulate him on his case being settled. And that they met in Madrid a few weeks back, but the media didn’t cover that.
So, it sounds like everything is fine between them, they just choose not to make a big public deal of it and flaunt it in front of the cameras. Since they are the two most controversial stars with the biggest legal troubles, I could see them mutual deciding that it would be best to avoid headlines that put their two names and faces together.
Sanju also talked about his last 3 birthdays, in jail. He said “Whatever was allowed, they used to do that. They used to make cookies for me. I got a lot of love there too and I thank the jail authorities and the inmates there, they gave a lot of love to me.” (Sometimes when Sanjay talks about his time in jail, it kind of sounds like one of my Sunday School kids talking about their time in camp.)
Oh, and finally, he confirmed his next couple films. A movie with Vindhu Vinod Chopra called “Marco” (Sanjay was great in Eklavya and Mission Kashmir, so I am excited to see what they do together next!), a remake of a Marathi movie De Dhakka (which was itself inspired by Little Miss Sunshine), and MUNNA BHAI!!!!! YAAAAAAAAY! Coming out in 2018, Sanjay confirms.
Meanwhile, yesterday was also “save the tiger” day, apparently. And Dia Mirza’s production company released a short film with kids in it talking about tigers. All of them are adorable, but Emraan’s son is super super adorable. He’s the one in the little white shorts.
Emraan said he was very proud of him, and that Emraan himself had his first on camera job at age 6, in an ad for mosquito repellent. My goodness, the Bhaat’s work hard! Emraan’s on camera at 6, a star by 24, and still cranking out multiple movies a year at age 37. And Pooja was acting at 17, and Alia at 19. Makes me feel lazy for just going to college at that age.
And finally, a death! Rajjat Barjatya, Rajshri Media’s CEO, dead of cancer. Which is sad, of course. The only thing I really have to say about it, is how interesting it is that Rajshri is still such a family firm. Rajjat is Sooraj’s cousin-brother, he handled the business part of things while Sooraj did the creative. I don’t know of another major studio that is still so strictly family run. I am sure, now that Rajjat is gone, they will look for another nephew or cousin or uncle to take over his role, rather than bringing in an outsider.
Regarding the Barjatyas, Rajshri doesn’t just make films, they are also a distribution house and a large television production company. And all of those divisions are headed by family members. Sooraj Barjatya once said that the way he shows families in his films is just the way his real life is, with a large joint family where everyone is close to everyone else. I guess that’s what you see in their business structure.

Yes, that joint family closeness is what I was noticing with this death announcement.
