Do You Think This Site Should Have More Readers? And I Should Go Back to DDLJ Posts? You Are the Ones With the Power To Make That Happen!

In March I was mentioned in an article in The Hindu along with a couple other bloggers, my photo appeared and this blog and my book were mentioned by name.  And the needle on my book sales and blog views moved not one millimeter.  The largest newspaper in India, and it has no ability to gain me a single reader.

Meanwhile, Meenakshy posted a mention of this blog in a reply to a Bhardwaj Rangan tweet, and I gained ten new followers in a DAY.  Not visitors, but followers, people who came over and liked what they saw and signed up to get notifications every time there is a new post.

So when I say to you that the only way this blog gets new visitors is through a link you post in the comments of another site, or in another forum, I’m not kidding!  You, the readers, are far more powerful than any newspaper, any website, even than me!  I’ve posted my own links in the past, and discovered that no one clicks through to links posted by the writer themselves.  I’ve even had approved guest posts on other websites, and got no referrals from them.  It’s only comment links that work.

So, here’s your monthly request to please help by posting links to my related content on other sites.  Quote me, or say the article reminded you of me, and put up a link to the original post.  And that will gain me more readers and keep me writing and the wheels of the blog keep turning.

Oh, and also, COMMENT!!!!  I also ran the numbers on that.  Every comment gets me 20 views.  People who may have already seen the post clicking through to it, others who wouldn’t have read it otherwise clicking through to read the comments.  It doesn’t have to be a brilliant comment, just say “I love this film!  —— was so good in their role!”, that’s enough.  Or, if you want to be really easy, just answer the questions at the end of the TGIF or FanFic posts.

Keep in mind that commenting is also the best way to keep me writing posts you enjoy.  I took a 3 month hiatus from the DDLJ posts, because the views were so low because no one commented.  I don’t skip even a week of the Malayalam posts because I always get comments, and the comments drive the views which drives more comments.  If I can spend 3 hours writing something that will be read by 300 people, I’m gonna do that instead of spending the same time writing something that will be read by 30 people.

So, two things.  Real simple.  And that have an enormous effect in keeping this site alive.

  1. I do too. I skim the posts about the other movie industries because I do not watch them. Hindi films, television, cricket, comedy, talk shows, magazines already occupies WAY too much of my time as it is. I LOVE the DDLJ posts. PLEASE do not stop. I don’t comment cause I usually read them on my phone which meanly doesn’t allow me to comment. I’ll try to make sure I do when I get back to my desktop each time.
As you know, I am most passionate about Shah Rukh and know his films best so that is what I tend to comment on. I love your industry, box office and the like posts as well. I will try to be more consistent commenting. Since my twitter followers are most SRK fans, it is those blog I tend to retweet. The definitions post recently was also great. I’ll go comment on that there.

    • Thank you! That’s very nice to hear. Judging by view counts, it seems like my Hindi/SRK posts are popular for the reasons you mention, but the comments don’t always reflect that and there will be random posts that don’t get many views, so I can’t be sure.

And thank you so much for reading!

  2. This is the only place I read anything Bollywood-related. So I can’t promise to leave links in comments elsewhere (there IS no elsewhere!) but I’ve shared the link with anyone willing to listen to me! I tend to comment only when I think I have something to say, so I’ll change that going forward.

    • Yes! Comment even when you have nothing to say! If nothing else, I like talking to you 🙂

  3. The kind of people that read The Hindu are mostly pretentious asses who would never subscribe to a blog even if they’ve been reading their column in the print edition forever. No wonder it didn’t help.

    • Well that makes me feel better!

Meanwhile, Bardwaj Rangan’s twitter followers are apparently lovely open-minded people with taste and discrimination.

  4. What is your vision for your blog say 3 years from now? Reading the comments, I see followers who want only Bollywood or followers who want more meaningful discussions. Both groups may overlap but mostly it would be one or the other group that comments/views on a particular post-unless it’s a universal theme like fandom. I did read your comment on why you don’t do videos of your reviews. But it seems like YouTube videos do earn you more followers. So maybe make videos of those reviews that are likely to earn you more views? Instagram is meant for pics, but maybe you can add a pic with a summary of the post as a caption(it has no character limits) which is what I see some good bloggers do with extensive recipes. IG is the place to earn followers. Now all this is subject to what you want of your blog.

    • See, the youtube videos just don’t really do anything for me. I’m looking at clickthroughs from youtube to the blog, how many people it refers. And it is a pitifully small number. I’ve had a couple of videos that really jumped out in terms of views on youtube, not like a “new sensation!” but a respectable number. And they got me no blog followers. I don’t want to be a youtube sensation who started on a blog, I want to be a blogger who gained followers through youtube.

Instagram is a thought, right now WordPress doesn’t integrate with it like it does with the other services. It’s no extra time/work to cross post to tumblr or twitter or Facebook, because WordPress does that for me, but instagram would add some extra time/difficulty. Which is the same reason I avoided youtube, but at least now I know for sure how much or little that can do for me, I should give Instagram the same option.

As for what I want, I want more readers and followers. I’m not worried about content, I’m providing it all myself and I can use my own judgement and stand behind everything I write on whatever topic it is. Besides, this isn’t really a “blog” so much as a website, and a website can handle a diverse group of readers who all separate out to their own areas of interest and rarely overlap. But if I am shooting for “grown-up website”, that means my reader base needs to grow to about 10 times its current size within the next 5 years, and that is one thing I am very bad at doing. Writing, easy. Promotion, hard.

      • IG isn’t meant for long dialogues, rather pictures which may be why it doesn’t integrate with WP. You would have to summarise your blogs into an interesting para which of course would be extra work. But you needn’t do an IG post for everyone of your posts. do that for few interesting posts so that people discover your website first via Instagram? Those interested will have enough stuff to read for another month or two until u do your next IG post. Believe me, Instagram is where you want to be if you want to market your product.
Also what exactly is that you want to do with your followers ? Is it easier writing knowing you have a community waiting for you or it’s the discussions that keeps it interesting ?

        • It’s easier writing for a community and I like the discussions, but I also am treating this like a job. And if I want to be a real writer with a real website, I need to work on growing my audience. You move forward or you die.
