Happy Mother’s Day! No idea what I am doing to celebrate. Something I am sure. It will all work out. If nothing else, there’s always last minute flowers. Anyway, to get you in the mood of feeling guilty and dutiful if you are a child, or demanding and “you BETTER be grateful!” if you are a mother, here are some songs. Be ready to get SAPPY! (and don’t read on if you are in a sort of conflicted mind today, which is an okay thing to be, mother-child relationship stuff can be tricky and this is a definite “all mothers are wonderful full stop” sort of post that may not match the mood you are in)
First, taking a break from Indian cinema, the Greatest Mother Guilt Song of All Time:
That’s from the side of “child, your mother is a SAINT”. Now a song from the side of “mother, your child loves and needs you more than you will ever know”.
Aamir Khan must have a seriously wonderful relationship with his mother, because he just did another great mother-child song in a movie he produced this year. One that is more about “there is a special joy in spending time with your child/your mother”.
Another similar one, from my favorite mother-daughter movie.
Okay, to end the sobfest on a moderately hopeful note (it could be worse! I considered and rejected putting in Sridevi’s last song in Mom and a song from Neerja), that happy song from Secret Superstar, which is either about romantic love or religious love or, in context, feels like it is about the love of a mother for a daughter and how it makes her feel like she can do anything.
