Saturday Small Talk: What Are We Doing for Father’s Day Weekend?

Happy Saturday!  This is the discussion place for the next few days, any news stories you want to bring up, any movies you’ve watched, anything at all.  And I will tell you about my weekend in return!

Today I get to spend the day at home, yaaaaay!  Because I did Kaala as a midweek movie, and dragged Friend Dina kicking and screaming to Race 3 last night, so I have no movies to watch.  I may not even get dressed until after noon.  The Dream!

(Yes, the flush of first love is nice, but you know what’s nicer?  Waking up and then rolling over and just going back to sleep again)

I do have to do some productive stuff today.  Get gas, for one thing, poor car drove me all over this week.

(Not this much driving, but sometimes it felt like it)

And I have to clean, because I’m hosting the church quilting group on Monday and those ladies have STANDARDS.

(I always think of quilting with this song because of 3:50)

And I should go to a bakery or something to get food for quilting.  And also church, because I agreed to do the coffee hour.

(Luckily, I already have plenty of tea)

Oh, and I also have to rehearse and prepare the service for tomorrow, because I’m doing that too.  Oh well, I am sure it will all come together last minute.

(I can always just pick up a guitar and sing “Koi Mil Gaya”)

But it is still a much more relaxing day than tomorrow when I have to get to church early, set up food, then give the service, then rush from the pulpit to the kitchen and be back on food patrol, and then somehow squeeze in a committee meeting around doing dishes.

(If only I could use late 90s technology to create a fake double of myself!)

And then as a reward and a special Father’s Day treat, I get to go visit Grandpa in the evening!  And possibly introduce him to Dog Hazel.  I am sure he will love her.  Who wouldn’t?

          • Saw it! Verdict: Liked it, didn’t love it. It was funny and very much like Sex and the City with all the clothes and gorgeous locales but also very much like SATC in being problematic about class. I hated the scene with the bruised maid being played for laughs and the way they laughed at guys on the dating app for being poor. But the gay uncles with the healthiest marital relationship in the film were great. And Kareena has never been more beautiful, she was stunning and I loved her wardrobe. The guy who played her fiance was good too.

The theater experience itself was super interesting. When I saw Padman it was in a super nice movie theater with stadium seating and alcohol but this one was in a ratty mall in Encino so the crowd was really different. Less visibly affluent, fewer English speakers. Many multigenerational groups in my theater, so not just young women seeing it. The theater showing Veere was completely full, which was impressive for a movie that’s been out three weeks and is competing with a Salman Khan opening (incidentally, people were lining up outside the theater 45 minutes early to see Race 3).

So overall I’m glad I went but to be honest after all the hype I was a little let down by the movie.

I kind of wanted the ending to be the gay uncles getting married. I got an under the surface message that part of the reason the uncle-by-partnership was so excited was because he wanted that kind of a wedding for himself. But that might be too much for the film to handle.

The maid scene didn’t bother me, because I saw it as played for laughs in that we were laughing at the groom for not realizing he was interrupting an important conversation, not at the maid or her situation. It certainly felt better than anything we saw in SATC where the working class were invisible, or else only relevant in terms of how they related to the main characters, not for anything happening in their own lives.

  1. Hi long time since i commented on anything..Hazel looks sad..why does your dog look so sad? also you went to see Race 3..why….of all the movies why that movie

    • It’s the big Eid opening movie! I had to watch it. Plus, there isn’t anything else to watch this week.

She does look sad in that picture, doesn’t she? I think she just wanted me to go to bed, she can’t sleep until I turn out the lights and get settled, but she gets increasingly cozy and starts shooting me dirty looks while she waits for me to go to bed.

    • Oh yeah, she just gives me sad puppy eyes waiting for me to give up and go to bed. Although I’ve discovered that if I just put a blanket over her, she settles right down and feels like it is night time.

      • hmm she sounds just like my mom(and by that i meant the waiting for me to go to bed look not the blanket thing just so you know ..do me a favour if you meet her don’t ever tell her i said that)..just be careful when you do that you don’t want to suffocate her..hmm what do you know now i sound like my mom..

        • I think she’ll be fine, she can also just stand up and walk away with the blanket trailing behind her. Which I think is the cutest thing, but also means she is under the blanket voluntarily and can get out whenever she wants.

What I’m worried about today is leaving her in the apartment all day because it is soooooooooooooooooooooo hot. But I left the air conditioner going in the bedroom and the door to the bedroom open with a gate across, so she can just lie down in front of it all day if she wants.

          • woah there you should be careful when you do that..leaving the AC on..can’t you leave her at your parent’s or friend’s place or some place where they can take care of your dog..Leaving an AC on when you are not home sounds kind of dangerous..

          • I did it in my old apartment a lot more just because it was so poorly ventilated the a/c had to be going all the time or else it would never drop below 110 all summer. It’s got a thermostat, it should be fine, it will turn itself on and off to save power. I do know of someone who took their dog to work on a day like today because they were worried about leaving them at home in the heat, but I don’t know if my boss would go for that 🙂

  4. South Filmfare awards were announced on Saturday night. All my favourites won. But Prabhas didn’t-more like he didn’t turn up. Winners & losers in Telugu are personal favourites-rarest occurrence for me as far as any award show go & I don’t even care for Filmfare awards.

    • I was reading all the Bahubali tweets and was wondering if Prabhas won anything. So, once again (as for Part 1) every single other person in the film wins an award, except for Prabhas. I wonder what’s going on. Usually the south Filmfares are a little more merit based than the Hindi ones.

What I don’t get is why everyone associated with the film (like the producers and official Twitter account) keeps going on about the “Bahubali sweep” of the awards if the hero actor didn’t win anything. Did Rana win for “best villain” or “best actor”, do you know?

      • He won for best supporting actor, Remya Krishnan won for supporting actress & so on. I honestly think it’s a case of Prabhas not being interested to turn up for the event & the organisers being sure that he won’t care one way or the other. Nayanthara also hadn’t turned up & was still awarded best actress in Tamil, but there weren’t many other options to give I guess.

          • Wow, who won best actress in Telugu, then? I really can’t think of a stronger performance from anyone else. Also, thanks for the info. I wonder, though, if part of the reason for awarding Rana (besides the fact that he obviously gets really thrilled about these awards) is that he has a lot more clout in the industry as the heir to Suresh Productions and studio.

          • Sai Pallavi. Have you seen Fidaa? That’s a breakthrough performance where she dubbed for herself unlike Anushka-so there’s a technicality in favour. But I’m not sure if that was the consideration for deciding. Both were wonderful in their respective roles & I love them both. Maybe Sai Pallavi a little more cos she has a long way to go & needs all the encouragement while Anushka seems to be in a semi-retired mode.

          • Well, there’s your explanation! the organizers are also Pranushka obsessives and thought “wait, if you we don’t give an award to either of them, maybe they will feel isolated in the industry and draw ever closer together in shared misery!” It’s the most logical explanation.

  5. @Margaret — you should do a Summer Solstice party. I want to have a party but don’t have the energy to actually organize one in real life ( 🙂 ) so I’m suggesting an online party here. And it would be fun for you to organize, because summer solstice in the northern hemisphere pretty much coincides with the onset of the monsoon season in India, so you can post lots of “rain” songs. 🙂

    • And, to make it a little challenging, since the solstice falls on a Thursday, you can search for rain songs from Tamil/Telugu films.

    • Oooo, good idea! I’ll try to remember to write and schedule something today and then I don’t have to think about it.
