I was thinking about how weird it was for Utkarsh Sharma to be a movie star, when his onscreen parents Ashmita Patel and Sunny Deol are still big active stars, and then I realized he wasn’t the only one to make this kind of a leap from childhood to adulthood. And then I realized this was an excuse to post a bunch of videos of cute small children, and why wouldn’t I do that?
First, let us all bill and coo over baby Utkarsh Sharma, proving my one universal theory of children: Small Children Always Cuter With Things on Their Heads. (my personal preference is little hats with animal ears sewn on, but a baby turban is cute too)
And now let us admire grown up Utkarsh! Still with that sort of flattened nose to give personality to his face.

But before Utkarsh, there was Kunal Khemu. Who was in quite a few films as a small child. Raja Hindustani is his most famous.

Hum Hain Rahe Pyaar Ke was his first role. And YES! He is wearing a thing on his head!
And then Dushman was his last appearance as a child, but a suitably adorable one, complete with an oversized uniform which is almost as cute as a thing on his head.

Before Kunal burst forth, in a blaze of surprising hotness just 7 years later! Isn’t it strange how little boys grow up and turn into men?

And then there’s Aftab Shivdasani! Sridevi’s little friend in Mr. India and with an even more important role in Chaalbaaz.
Before bursting forth as an adult star in Mast at 21
And then there’s one I am very proud of noticing, little Padmini Kolhapure in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, I watched her and thought “this little girl has crazy charisma”. No thing on her head, but the instrument that is bigger than her is pretty cute too.

Sure enough, just three years later she was Rishi’s heroine in a classic song.
Of course there’s Jugal Hansraj, breaking our hearts in Masoom.
And then breaking our hearts in a new way in Mohabbattein.
There’s loads more actors who started as children and became something big (Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Imraan Khan, Shashi Kapoor). But out of those I have listed, who do you think navigated the child to adult transition best?
I’m going with Kunal Khemu. This is a very attractive man.

You missed Urmila who played Jugal’s half sister in Masoom!

I was going to add her, but I’d already done both Masoom and Mast, so it felt weird.

We were used to it in at least Telugu/Tamil movies 🙂
SriDevi was 8 years granddaughter to NTR in Badi Pantulu (1972 – good movie) and both had a rain dance duet in Vetagadu (1979 – she was 16) and 6 more movies.
Same case with ANR – both as a daughter and wife.
For your list, I’d go with Jugal.

I like Jugal too. A bit of an odd career, great child role. And then an adult career that never quit took off, which turned into behind the camera jobs.

Watched a Telugu movie on TV this weekend having Mahesh Babu as a child actor (or hero I should say). He acted as child superstar in many movies, made a reentry as a teenage hero (Rajakumarudu with Preety Zienta and Murari) and became a super star. – would definitely make this list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahesh_Babu#Early_career_and_breakthrough_(1979%E2%80%932003)

Agree! I was debating Hrithik and Aamir, but they were really just in a couple movies to help out the family, not actually “stars” or known as children. Looks like Mahesh was known, not just doing it to help out.

Kunal Khemu!! I want him to do big movies 😦
My favorite role of his is in Zakhm, as Pooja’s Son, it was such a significant part and I remember thinking I cant wait for this child to grow up to be a great movie star.
