Happy Start of the Christmas Season! A Run Down of the Holiday Movies I Have Watched So Far and Their Hindi Movie Matched Set

Well, I spent Thanksgiving watching so-so Christmas themed rom-coms on Netflix.  In case you also feel the need for so-so Christmas themed rom-coms, allow me to make some suggestions!

Christmas Wedding Planner: I picked this one based on the title (so stupid! And yet it makes me want to watch it).  It was one of those where you could see the script was super smart (or maybe the book?  Based on a Harlequin romance!), but the directing and acting and especially the BACKGROUND MUSIC (too much tinkle tinkle!!!!  Drives me crazy) just wasn’t up to it.  Still though, well worth watching while making Christmas cookies or wrapping presents or something similarly brainless.  And matches neatly with every Indian movie ever based around a wedding with a romance between the bride’s cousin and someone else.

(Chandni, for instance)

The Princess Switch: It’s actually a good movie!  Vanessa Hudgens is wonderful, puts in a great performance including the difficult “I am a person who natural speaks English with a British accent but am putting on a bad American accent” sections.  Totally highly recommend this one, probably my top recommendation.  Also made me want to watch Prem Ratan Dhan Payo because it’s basically the same plot, but at Christmas time and without all the dueling.

(This already looks kind of Christmassy, right?)

The Spirit of Christmas: This is a terrible movie, but I love the pure chutzpah of this very very stupid plot.  See, there is a ghost that only appears once a year on Christmas at an old inn.  Our heroine is hired to help refurbish the inn, naturally she and the Ghost fall in love and then she has to solve the Christmas mystery to free him.  But, I mean, HE’S A GHOST!!!!!  This is not a feasible life partner!!!!!!  Also, that title might be too terrible of a pun even for me.  And obviously, the Hindi film match for it is Paheli.

(Picture this, but in a haunted New England inn at Christmas time)

The Holiday Calendar: They try to make it Christmas advent themed and magical, but really it’s just a woman who is torn between the new romantic perfect seeming guy, and her boring reliable best friend.  So, Kya Kehna, but at Christmas and without the pregnancy.

(And yes, her family is just as saccharine as this, plus an adorable little niece)

    • Thank you! I’ll probably be sick of them in a month, but then I can switch to Republic Day themed or something.

    • No, it’s actually good! I mean, it’s what’s promised, ridiculous royal love story at Christmas time. But the dialogue isn’t horrible and the actors are all good and also attractive.

Later — I watched it! The whole darn thing! But, I noticed a few logistical flaws and continuity issues. Maybe more than a few. PLUS, I’m so clueless it took me almost the whole movie to realize the lead is the actress from High School Musical (she just goes from one hit to the next!).
