Saturday Small Talk: Let’s All Have Opinions on Stuff!

Happy February! A nice short month with Valentine’s Day in the middle of it. And then March, which is practically spring, and the time just keeps moving along faster and faster!

So, what shall we talk about today?

Priyanka’s Hollywood Movie is Not Getting a Theatrical Release/She Announced a Ma Anand Sheela Movie

What do we feel about these things?

It’s coming to Netflix instead, which is being spun as an exciting thing, but that’s bad, right? Like, if you make a movie intended for theaters and it doesn’t release in theaters, that’s bad? Different from if you announce a Netflix deal and make a movie just for them

How Do We Feel? What Change Might This Spark?

Sandeep Aur Pinky is Rescheduling

Supposedly to avoid a clash with Luka Chuppi because it is good enough to deserve a clear run. Do we believe this or do we think there is something wrong with the film?

De De Pyaar De is Also Rescheduling

This time the explanation is that Total Dhamaal is releasing right before and they don’t want the audience to get tired of Ajay. Again, do we believe this or do we think they are trying to fix the film?

Are they rescheduling so they can reshoot and make Tabu the love interest?

  1. Re: PC…I don’t think I really like Rebel Wilson that much but I was planning to watch this one either way since it seems to be a critique of rom-coms. It does seem like the movie wasn’t “theater-worthy” but that’s the case with all rom-coms nowadays. They never get the same attention as the stupid Marvel movies. However, Netflix is the new champion of rom-coms after Set It Up and To All the Boys…, so this is a smart move as well.

I actually think PC is a good choice for the Wild Wild Country adaptation (even though I don’t like her generally) and with Levinson’s direction, I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets some award talk.

I’m so worried about Sandeep aur Pinky Farrar for all three of them…the director, too! If they think a Kartik Aryan film is big competition, the movie is in trouble. Though it seems like there’s always a lot of jostling for release dates.

They better be rewriting that Ajay/Tabu movie so that they are the romancing couple!

    • I saw the trailer in theaters last night for Isn’t It Romantic and Priyanka is in it for maybe half a second? Her character doesn’t even seem to get an introduction. I don’t know what that says for her eventual role in the film, but in terms of how the trailer was edited, they seemed to be leaning hard on Rebel Wilson and the general idea of a send-up of rom-coms more than any other actor, or even the actual (I assume) romance that will be in the film. Which might mean they thought rom-coms are having a resurgance and people will want to talk about them, or they are having an un-resurgance and people want to make fun of them, or that people just love Rebel Wilson, or that people are more likely to turn out for a comedy than a romance, and of course whatever they thought could also be completely wrong since they didn’t manage to get a theatrical release.

Anyway, I trust you to watch it for us and give your review.

Kartik Aaryan did just have the sleeper hit of the spring last year. So maybe it’s not that bad! Maybe they have a good film and are just running scared!

  2. I questioned whether Priyanka can pull off portraying Ma Sheela and all hell broke loose in my mentions. It went on for days too. Someone created a whole tweet thread to rebut me. I was both appalled and deeply amused.

I’ve only seen Priyanka in Fashion (meh), Dil Dhadakne Do (she was fine but not a standout compared with the rest of the cast), and Quantico (terrrrrrrible). Maybe she’s been great in a film I haven’t seen. But I’m skeptical.

    • You’re not alone…I’m also not a Priyanka fan and I generally like and root for just about all of the stars. It’s her dubious acting talent, her plastic persona, and her general tackiness. All that being said, I enjoyed her performances in Dostana, Barfi, Bajirao Mastani, Salaam-E-Ishq, Anjaana Anjaani, and Agneepath. If I have generally warm feelings toward a film, then I end up liking her performances, but I still would always prefer another actress if I had the choice. And there’s never been a role that I thought only she could have done.

Still, after watching Wild Wild Country, there’s a quality to Ma Anand Sheela, an unabashed calculating and flirtatious manner that she might be able to pull off on screen…plus there’s just enough physical resemblance as well.

    • I saw your tweet and wanted to answer that I agree with you, but then I saw all those crazy fans and I thought I don’t want them on my TL. Sorry πŸ™‚
But you’re right – she is not the best actress. I think people are used to bad acting and so when somebody is OK they think it’s something bigger it really is. Priyanka is ok, she doesn’t ruin the movies, but she is not the “real” actress IMO.

    • I just briefly skimmed the thread because you got me curious. What was really interesting to me is that a lot of the “rebuttals” I saw to you were still frames from her films. Which is kind of my problem with her performance, it feels “model”y in that it is focused on creating a perfect beautiful still image instead of a full performance with movement in it. Also, this is why I didn’t write about Priyanka for a good two years. Just not worth the hassle.

So far, I still haven’t really been impressed with PC. I’ve found her not-terrible in a whole bunch of movies, especially in kind of light roles. Dostana, Pyaar Impossible, the Don movies. But I haven’t yet had a moment where I thought “she is the only one who could play this role in this particular way”. Which is something I think pretty much any time I watch Juhi, Kajol, Rani, even Kareena.

  4. I didn’t know Arjun and Parineeti movie was supposed to releas so soon. I haven’t seen a poster or teaser or nothing and I was sure it will be in cinemas in June or further. Oh, maybe if they are afraid of competitors they should do like Priyanka’s producers and just send it to Netflix.
