Follow up to yesterday’s post on songs that work in context, what are ones that work best out of context? That are creepy, or funny, or just illogical if you see them in the movie, but if you watch them without the movie surrounding them, are delightful on their own?
Another Shahrukh one that almost makes sense, but then not, is “Khaike Paan Banaraswala” from Don 1. After you know the TWIST at the end of the film, can you think of any logical reason for these characters to do this song?
This is one of my “so stupid but I love it” songs, and they try to give it context, but it doesn’t really work. Not only is Arjun Rampal a super soldier that somehow also knows how to dance, he is pretending to be a dancer to fool the club owner Naseeruddin Shah who is suspicious of him, and those suspicions never come up again after this dance number. Just makes NO SENSE!!! “Teri Dekh Dekh Ladkaiyan”
And here’s one from a movie I fastforwarded through just to find out what this song is about and then went “wait, what?”. It’s a horror movie, all of these young people are going on a vacation to forget the terrible murder of the heroine’s sister/their friend. And two of them are psychotic killers. Does this song feel like a bunch of young people dealing with grief and fear? And, on the other hand, do any of these people seem like psychotic killers? “Sapney” from Sssshhh
Those are the ones that pop to mind for me. What are the songs for you that you have to divorce from context in order to enjoy?
Chaiyya chaiyya! Not that it works best out of context more but I find that it’s a song that still gets everyone moving even if they don’t know the context or the language. I find it also kind of a whiplash because it’s such a bouncy , joyous song but the meaning is much deeper (Gulzar is a genius). It’s not your normal item song!

Ishq Kameena! That’s another one, everyone loves it and no one actually wants to watch that movie.

Why This Kolaveri Di – everybody knows this song, but it doesn’t have sense and has nothing in common with the movie.
