Kalank Teaser: Karan Johar’s Dream Multi-Starrer?

I have been in twitter lockdown for the past month or so as a little mental health treat to myself, so I missed this and my friend had to send me the link and shame me for being a bad fan. But whatever, I was out there not being on twitter and enjoying sunshine and happiness and people!

I was thinking this movie would be a Bahubali/Bhansali rip off historical action film, but watching the teaser it feels way more like a classic 70s-80s silly multi-starrer!!!! We have two young men and two young women, one older man and one older woman, loads of locations, and what promises to be very twisted relationships. Some of the sets definitely look more “olden times” than others, I could easily see a multi-generation kind of tale, perhaps Sonakshi is Alia’s mother or similar. And early on, the casting was announced as Adi and Varun playing brothers, if that is still the case it looks like a classic “separated at birth” kind of thing with him raised as a blacksmith and Aditya as the Prince. Very old-school.

I have no guesses on plot, or characters, or even setting. Besides the obvious, Madhuri is a courtesan, Varun is a noble blacksmith, Varun and Alia are in love. Maybe Alia marries Aditya, maybe not. Maybe Sonakshi is also a courtesan, maybe she is something else. Maybe Sanjay is the father of someone, maybe he is the old man version of one of the characters telling this story, I have no idea.

But this is what it feels like to me, a silly romantic fantasy with many stars, like Dharam-Veer (70s movie I just watched thanks to a recommendation here) more than any of the more recent things. And Karan has always said he wants to make an old-fashioned multistarrer someday, maybe this is it?

  1. I think Sanjay is at least ARK’s father based on the last names of the characters. I would love it if it was a separated at birth 70s-80s style film. I loved those!! I am still afraid they are going to make it much more SLB/Devdasesque tragedy and that will annoy the crap out of me and make my sister very happy. I really want to see this movie, but I am so not in the mood for a tragedy, so I might have to wait for your spoiler review before I watch it.

    • Could Sanjay also be ARK’s son? Based on his wristwatch in the shot we saw, he looks like he might be in more modern times than the other characters. I would love if it’s a Doctor Zhivago kind of deal with the aging second generation hearing a story of the grand deeds of their parents.

And I will do my best to watch it and report back 🙂

        • Since Sanjay seems to be in more modern times, maybe Sanjay is the illegitimate child of Alia and Varun trying to find out what happened to his parents, and the end reveal is that they are alive and healthy in really really bad old-age make-up?

Or he is the legitimate child of Alia and Aditya and he is looking for Alia who ran off with Varun. Kind of like Zubaidaa. I know that doesn’t explain who Madhuri is, but I am putting a pin in that for now.

Aren’t multi-starrers fun? It’s been so long since we had this kind of a movie, where a whole bunch of people are connected and we don’t know how!

          • Ooooh! I hope that is the case. If not, I see a fanfic in the making!

And, yes, multistarrers are soo much fun! Did you check out the teaser again and notice the still where Sanjay and Madhuri are in the same frame?

          • Yes I did! I even slowed it down so I could study it. It’s a bit of a trick, the way they are standing it is possible they aren’t in the same scene. That is, it is fading from past to present or a split screen or something. Or they could be in the same scene, just caught in an awkward moment.

  2. I thought it was a perfectly structured teaser just giving us an equal flavor of each character. Aditya Roy Kapur couldn’t really act his way out of a paper bag, could he? His was the only close-up that was completely wooden. Clearly, Alia and Varun are the couple we root for…I think it’s got to be a flashback and Madhuri and Sanjay are, I think, Sonakshi and Aditya grown up. And Alia and Varun die and they are the ones to live with some kind of guilt or responsibility for their deaths later in life (thus the newer wristwatch and weird modern haircut on Sanjay). I think neither Sonakshi or Aditya really look like the older couple but close enough.

What’s interesting to me is all of the background talk about this being Karan’s father’s story idea and he was never able to bring it to life. Maybe Karan felt like before he brought his “timeless epic” to the big screen, he should first finish his father’s wishes. Though I don’t understand why he didn’t just direct this one? Maybe he knew it would be too SLB esque and didn’t want the comparisons. With the Mughal set story he only has comparisons to Jodhaa Akhbar and Mugal-E-Azam.

Now that I have a movie buddy, I’m definitely seeing this one on the big screen! I need to look up who’s doing the music…I bet it will be great. And good for Abhishek Verman for being so versatile…even if the story is weak, it’s already been shown to be a beautifully shot and staged film.

    • Never mind, their characters’ names don’t make sense then! Still I like my idea…looks like Pritam is doing the music and that’s fine…it will sound like other good things;)

      • Pritam had a really slow 2018, which makes me optimistic for this soundtrack, if he has spent 2018 working only on this film.

  3. My guess is that ARK is Sanjay’s father. And Sonakshi is his wife I think (from the last names and sindoor). He’s also somehow married again to Alia.
Varun is Sanjay-Madhuri’s son. So Varun and ARK are half-brothers. Apparently KJo wanted to make this with SRK, Kajol, Ajay and Rani – so there is def going to be a triangle there. I think Sonakshi stood out for me, she really has this old-world charm and fits in really well. Also ARK looks goood!

      • Oh shoot, I got really excited by that plot idea. Some kind of twisted half-siblings across the generations romance would be AWESOME.

    • But Karan promised Sanjay and Madhuri would never have a scene together, which makes me wonder if maybe Sanjay is a whole different generation? Or else Karan was just lying.

      • I think Karan was lying (mark my surprise). Watch between 1:41 and 1:42 Madhuri and Sanjay are in the scene together. It’s really quick but it’s there.
