Saturday Small Talk: SOTY2 Song, Mahesh Babu Movie, and Star Wars!

Happy Saturday! Albie got bumped to a different obedience class and I am trying not to take it personally. He tries! We both try!

New Student of the Year 2 song! A love song which also maybe gives us some plot hints. I am getting that Ananya and Tiger are rehearsing a dance together and it makes their bond grow and turn romantic. And maybe Tiger is already dating Tara, Ananya’s best friend? That ending moment is odd though, it feels like a moment of “we would like to invite you into our relationship” which is kind of disturbing for a high school movie.

And, Mahesh Babu! He has a movie coming out next week? Does anyone know anything about this? Should I see it?

Finally, it’s May the Fourth!!!! Star Wars Day!!!!! I have suggested a cast for the remake in every language and every decade on this post. Hop over there and tell me if young Shammi Kapoor or Prithviraj are the best possible Han Solo.

  1. Maharshi is from the director of Munna, Oopiri and Evadu – so, I am not that interested. Heard, it’s another typical Telugu commercial with a social message – an NRI millionaire businessman returning to his village for innovative ways of farming

    • He got bumped down to joint lessons with a 3 month old puppy. It’s actually saving me money, I paid group lessons rate and now I am getting semi-private lessons. But still, THE HUMILIATION!!!!!

On the other hand, the owner of the 3 month old was very impressed with Albie Dog’s attention span and intelligence. Compared to his baby dog. But still, that’s something!

  2. I see someone watched Dirty Dancing a bunch of times. I like this except for the creepy final bit, although going by the idea that they’re ripping off Dirty Dancing, the other girl might be a Penny equivalent instead of a girlfriend.

    • YES! we think it is a bubble gum high school romance, but it’s actually about a woman’s right to choose!

But probably not. And yes, i got the dirty dancing vibe too. Except maybe with the genders reversed? I feel like she is supposed to be the dancer, not him.

      • lol, if only. I guess maybe the Penny is injured or can’t dance because of more frivolous reaons and Alia has to fill in. I do think Tiger is trying to teach her here, what with the constant ballet jumps, and also based on the weirdo threesome vibe at the end. But who knows. Tiger looks better in this, joyful.

  3. I was very excited for the Mahesh Babu movie, but the trailer looks super disappointing. I don’t even understand what the focus of the plot is – it goes from being about success to a college friends story and some business/social drama thing? Looks like a typical poorly-written masala films. Mahesh Babu feels like someone with a lot of untapped potential as an actor, but he’s been going from one masala film to another during this entire career. At least his earlier ones were entertaining

    • Spyder was great! An interesting concept, great villain, great action sequences, all good. The shoe-horned in a romance that was pretty stupid, but otherwise pretty awesome. And then it flopped and he made Bharat Ane Nenu which was (I think) idiotic. Poor Mahesh, he made an actual good movie with a good director, and then it all went wrong and he had to go back to simple hero type narratives.

      • He mentioned in an interview y’day that he would not repeat the mistakes he did for Spyder and Brhamotsavam – he thought the stories (plot) were good, but on the sets itself, he realized they would bomb. I agree with him on this point – Spyder was an interesting concept, but executed badly – I couldn’t bear watching it, felt it as a silly movie

        • He, like the rest of the Telugu stars is quite afraid of experimenting. Apparently 24 was offered to him before Surya. I’m GLAD he refused, coz he isn’t capable of emoting as well as Surya. The Tamil actors are more brave compared to the Telugu stars. Probably because of the audience.

          • I’ve only been following Telugu and Tamil film for 2 years, but in those 2 years it also seems like Telugu stars make far fewer films than the Tamil stars, and those films are much bigger. Is that a fair assessment? If so, it might explain why they are more cautious.

          • I don’t think they make lesser films, but yes, most of them are the big commercial films. While the big stars in Tamil like Ajith and Vijay are similar to their Telugu counterparts, most other actors like Surya, Karthi, Dhanush, Vikram balance it out. And you have a Vijay Sethupathi who is not your conventional massy hero but is now a huge star. Also the Tamil audience are far more accepting of new actors and non star like heroes, which makes it easier for them to toy with new ideas. For eg,Surya’s latest film NGK is huge ,but it’s directed by Selvaraghavan(Dhanush’s brother) who is not exactly known for the big blockbusters, but edgy and gritty films. I can’t imagine Mahesh Babu or Jr NTR or Allu Arjun attempting something like that.

  4. Skip Mahesh movie. He used to be my favourite actor (Not for his acting skills but for his choice of movies). But his last 3-4 movies were very disappointing and from the trailer looks like it is going to be a even bigger dissapointment.
    Go for Nani’s Jersey instead.

  5. I’m sorry. These sweet young things DO NOT have it. Not Sara, not Ananya. Alia does but that’s it. Where are the Tabu’s and Madhiri’s and Rani’s and even Kajols……t

    • Bhumi! Taapsee! Kiara! There’s hope, it’s just not 19 year old hope.

And, on the other hand, I have to admit that Anushka and Dips didn’t exactly blow me away in their first films. Or Alia. These little babies aren’t grown up into real actresses yet, I’ll give them time.

I’d be happy if they were having their “growing up” time like normal 19 year olds, eating pizza at midnight in the cafeteria of their college and worrying about their English grade and figuring out how to use washing machines, but I will still follow my policy of seeing them as adorable little baby people who might grow up into anything.

(this is partly influenced by my teaching my last Sunday School class for the year and realizing that the kids in the first class I taught 7 years ago are now Ananya’s age. And those kids are just little babies! they shouldn’t be making movies with a shirtless Tiger Shroff! They should be awkwardly flirting with dorky kids in Intro to Something)

  6. I’m not such a big Bhumil fan. She was amazing when she was willing to be the fat girl. Now that she is thin like the rest of them, her performances are also like the rest of them. Tapsee, yes. She is a major talent, but she is no sweet young thing. She is 31; that does not put her in this SOTY2 group. It think the biggest problem is Tiger. I hate this nepotism conversation, but he really really is a product of that. He cannot act his way out of ….well anything. He is a great dance and athlete, but that is it.

    • At least he is putting int he work. And there is a real market for dancer/action heroes that is not being filled right now and Tiger is filling it. I’ll get angry once he starts moving out of his lane. Which could be with SOTY2, if it’s all fun sports and dancing scenes, that’s great. But if they try to make him do drama or serious romance, then I will get mad at him.
