If you are a dog person, and an American, I am sure you are wondering. Since the 4th of July is a bit of a nightmare for many dogs. And dog owners.
Dogs hate fireworks. Well, most dogs. Dog Hazel was surprisingly unaffected. But the two dogs we had growing up were reduced to shaking miserable messes. For some dogs it scares them, for the really unfortunate dogs the loud noises cause severe ear pain. The whimper, they bark, they cower, it’s horrible.
Albie Dog, so far, not that bad! He seems about as alarmed as he was when I turned on the ceiling fan for the first time. It’s new and strange and a little bit scary, but he doesn’t seem to be in pain and he isn’t alarmed and running around barking or anything. Which is good, because I am surrounded by fireworks going off for about 7 hours (all illegal, most of them in the public parks near by but some in backyards and alleys).
Here, I can show you in picture form! Fireworks started before dark and he got a little bit clingy, while still keeping a close eye out the window.
Eventually, as the booms got louder and closer, he moved up to sit on my lap.
Then to the doorway of the living room.
But that wasn’t safe enough, so he finally found the only truly secure spot.
But now he is doing better. We retreated to the bedroom together and I turned on the a/c, and he is tucked into his crate, all safe.
