Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Hide From the Heat

Happy Saturday! Supposedly we will get a bunch of thunderstorms today that will turn the 99 degree weather into a more tolerable high 70s. But I will believe it when I see it. In the meantime, I will spend my day hiding in air conditioned spaces.

Things to talk about! I saw Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) with my parents last night, it was a park service thing, a free out door screening in one of the prettiest little parks in the city that’s just about half a mile away from me. And BOY, is that a sappy movie! Show folk are good folk, patriotism is the best, our hero is noble and just, and blah blah blah. But it was a nice evening. And now I am thinking, we need more saccherine biopics of film people for the Hindi industry! Mahanati was a good start, but there’s got to be more.

This exact same “success after success” montage is in Yankee Doodle Dandy

Other stuff to talk about!

Siddhant Chaturvedi’s rumored YRF film might be the (also rumored) Bunty Aur Babli sequel! How do we feel about this?

Kangana versus Taapsee and Deepika, I have nothing to say, what do you say?

And, song teaser for Saaho! Not a trailer, a teaser for the trailer, which is itself advertising for the film. It’s the publicity that is eating its own tail!

Far more interesting (to me), the composer is listed as Tanishk Bagchi who is one of Dharma’s go-to writers. Do you think that’s why Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy left last minute? Karan pressured the producers into bringing in Tanishk for a “hit” song and S-E-L were insulted that their perfect soundtrack was being messed with?

  1. KR vs tapsee/dips – what are you referring to?

Speaking of KR, I just watched the trailer for Judgemental Kya Hai. She’s gotten to play these OTT characters before, but usually in flop films. I hope this film is a good one and, if so, does well financially. It’s interesting to see a movie that contrasts two types of “crazy” people – one that’s overtly externally crazy, and one who plays normal but deep inside is actually crazy. RRao’s character seems to be the later. Also to see the two of them acting out a crazed sexual romance – a new avatar for RRao – will be a treat. When it comes to KR, I compartmentalize KR the actress from KR the human, because she turns in so many good and interesting performances. As for mental illness and disorders, I have so much of it in my extended family that I am more sympathetic to her than turned off by her. Of course, one also feels sympathetic to those at the receiving end of her antics. It’s just a mess all around.

Here in California we have been experiencing daily earthquakes up and down the state of significant magnitude for the past couple of days. In grade school (in CA public schools, mind you) they actually used to teach us that CA would one day physically split off from the continent due to earthquake activity. So for the first time I’m actually wondering if #calexit is nigh?? :O 😉

  2. What are your thoughts on the latest song from Jabariya Jodi? I feel like it’s fun but highly forgettable. Even from the song, I feel like I am way more excited about Sid than Parineeti who just seems uncomfortable with the entire thing.

I used to be a fan of Parineeti before, but the last couple of movies have really shown me that she has very limited range. Her accent in the trailer seems stilted, as does her acting and frankly and sadly, I am just not interested in her movies anymore. To me, I feel like she is getting worse over time because she comes in movies that she thinks should be successes. What are your thoughts ?

    • Oh, there’s a new Jabariya Jodi song? I haven’t seen it.

Yeah, you aren’t the only one who is feeling disenchanted with Pari. So strange, she is being offered better and better roles and failing at them, while in the beginning she had a few not very promising movies (I like them, but they weren’t promising) and gave them her all. And Sid is kind of the opposite, I think he is slowly and steadily getting better and better with every film. And the movies he is being offered are slightly less and less promising as his career moves forward without any major successes.

      • Here you go! Also can’t stand Parineeti’s make up. She is naturally so pretty but I think she looks ridiculous in this – a bit too try hard.

        • Oh wow, you are right about her make-up! At first I thought you meant just her green eye shadow, which was clearly on purpose and supposed to be striking. But then as I kept watching it, her whole face looked off somehow. Like I couldn’t even see her expressions, because the make-up was so layered on her face.

          • The person who is doing her make up should be fired. The green eye shadow is striking and it would have been fine if they hadn’t added ALL the make up and then additional holi type colours…it just looks so off. I completely agree about the expressions.

Sid on the other hand looks great like a small town guy. I wish that they had made Pari look the same, and kept it simple. It would have been so much better right?

          • Yes! Just eye shadow for small town style glamour and nothing else would have been perfect for this song.
