Tiger-Hrithik Trailer: Well, I’m Disappointed!

Blech! This is not the movie I want it to be. Except in little parts. But large parts of it, blech!

The plot is pretty “blech” too, at least so far. Hrithik is Tiger’s commanding officer and taught him everything he knows. Hrithik goes rogue and Tiger is assigned to hunt him down. I’m hoping for a twist where Hrithik actually knows something evil is happening and that’s why he went rogue and, after a few fights, he and Tiger work together. Otherwise this is just going to be chase-chase-chase-fight-fight-fight-boring-boring-boring.

And they aren’t even good fight scenes! Guns and army camo and dim lighting and punch-punch-punch. That’s not fun, that’s not spectacular and exciting. And I don’t know why this film seems to be thinking that I have been desperately waiting to watch Tiger and Hrithik have a punch-kick fight scene together. Hrithik isn’t know as a fighter. He’s good in fight scenes and all, but it’s not like he is trained in martial arts. I don’t sit around going “gee, I wonder if Hrithik could beat up_____”. If they wanted that kind of film and excitement, they should have cast Akshay opposite Tiger. I am legitimately curious about that match up, and those fight scenes could be spectacular, for once both of them not needing to pull punches (literally).

My one hope is when the trailer suddenly switches to exotic travel scenes and Vaani Kapoor. I am definitely here for ridiculous chase scenes in sunny resort towns! That is the movie I want. Plus, a love story.

What do you think? Agree or disagree? Like the trailer or hate it?

  1. Fights, arms and chases are not my cup of tea but I really liked this trailer. Maybe because I didn’t have any expectations? The sceneries are beautiful, the music engaging, both actors looks good, Vaani also. It looks like a decent action film, nothing more, nothing less.

    • I just want more of that pretty scenery and Vaani, and less of the desert and explosions. I’ll still see it, but I really hope the balance is more 80% pretty scenery and 20% gritty fight scenes.

  2. Siddharth Anand gets the opportunity again and again to make these mediocre rom-coms and action-drama films. Meanwhile Adi Chopra doesn’t give any chances to my favorite directors from the YRF camp -Shimit Amin (Chak de India) and Atul Sabharwal (Aurangzeb). At least the latter is directing a Netflix series for Red Chillies.

    • I don’t know if I am going to blame Siddharth Anand in this case. It feels to me like word came down “make a gritty army style action movie” and he just obeyed orders. At least, that is the bit that I hate about it. If you hate other parts, then those could totally be Siddharth’s fault.

  3. Hmm. I didn’t get gritty from the trailer. To me, the trailer kind of reminded me to Bang Bang, which I loved. Silly, simple plot; OTT, unrealistic action sequenses; pretty locales; muscular men and pretty women etc. I just don’t see Siddharth Anand directing and writting scenes and dialogues for anything too gritty. I am, like everyone else, really hoping for a good dance off between Hrithik and Tiger. I am going to be so mad if there isn’t one.

    • Oh I hope you are right! I love love LOVE Bang Bang, and if it has that mixture of fun silly action and romance, I will be a happy camper. But if it is more like Baaghi 2, where the action is all super super serious and commando style, not so much.

      • Oh oh oh. I just read this interview by Hrithik: https://www.filmfare.com/news/bollywood/hrithik-roshan-opens-up-on-success-sussanne-khan-and-super-30_-35783.html. I don’t think the interview is very interesting. But see relevant question and answer below.

“What’s the most exciting thing about your upcoming actioner, Yash Raj Films’ War?
That I’m doing a film that I love so much. It’s a genre that I crave to do. Dhoom 2 and Bang Bang were the few I did in that genre. If I had the luxury, I’d only do such films. They’re difficult but I enjoy them. When I read the script of War (directed by Siddharth Anand), I was extremely charged because I knew that this is it – finally a film in which I’d be able to do the things I want to do. Since Bang Bang, I was hunting for a film like this.”

On a separate note, while I would love to see Askhay-Tiger action movie, we all know Askhay isn’t going to do any film like that unless that is some weird jingoistic theme to it and I really don’t think I can handle that!

        • Yaaaay!

Also, just read the interview, and Hrithik still speaks in inspirational poster quotes. Which I find strangely endearing because it seems like he legitimately believes in his little mantras. And they have helped him through bad times, so who am I to make fun?

          • He really does. I remember reading that he has a life coach, who accompanies him on sets and in interviews. I like that he isn’t shy to seek help and constantly wants to better himself and yes, it is very endearing.

But unfortunately, that also means I find his interviews repetative and boring after a while. I feel like saying to him, say something fun, interesting, and new please! Dare to be a just a little bad, not bonkers, but just a bit naughty!

          • I assume because of his stutter he also has a hard time speaking off the cuff, presumably practices phrases in advance and speaks carefully. But he could practice funny phrases! Hire a writer or something and play it out in advance like a film script.

          • Hate to say it but he comes across so simple-minded, like a Ken doll. He literally spouts dumb lines from motivational posters and thinks he’s doing something.

            Like

          • Well, at least he’s neutral. I’ve never heard him say anything negative about anything. It may be simple minded but it is mean in a kindly way.

Although I would still hate to be trapped with him in an elevator, can you imagine?

            Like

          • Saying something negative would require him to first think about a subject. I mean… he probably only thinks about what time he has to drink his protein shake, whether he did leg exercises and when his next hair highlights appointment is.

On another note, I do like that he’s at least gotten away from the blonde and gone for gray this time in his hair. It makes him look a bit more real.

  4. I don’t know how they made this movie and made it so heterosexual. You would think there would HAVE to be a homoerotic element but even I am getting NOTHING. It’s basically Mr and Mrs Smith and yet they seem to have 0 chemistry. I don’t understand.

    Like

    • It’s Tiger. He is determinedly asexual. No chemistry with Hrithik, no chemistry with his other costars either. He’s just too pretty, like a photograph come to life.

At least, that’s how I feel.

Weird now that I think about it, they are the reverse of their fathers. Not that Anil was a chiseled perfect handsome, but young Jackie was definitely beautiful and Anil was always moving.

  5. Or an Ajay-Tiger stunt-off!

    Current generation =
Vidyut-Tiger action, fights, and stunts extravaganza 🙂 Too much beauty in one screen/movie.

Harshv-Tiger where Harshv is the rogue cop that uses his brains to hunt and find the charismatic action&stunts heist specialist Tiger. Almost like a Minority Report (Colin forgot his last name & Tom cruise) or a Sacred Games dynamic. Lots of lingering closeups on Harshv in offices as he thinks or feels or analyzes or plots, lots of wide angle shots in broad daylight in beautiful locations as he actions or stunts or fights or runs.

    • Oooo, I like your Harsh-Tiger plot! Tiger Vidyut I don’t think I could handle because I legitimately cannot tell one from the other.

But Harsh-Tiger, I would say that Harsh is a troubled genius, suffered a traumatic injury that pulled him off field work and now sits in the headquarters waiting for an interesting case. We can have it established in an intro scene by seeing him solve an “impossible” mystery within 5 minutes of being given the data. Tiger is a master criminal doing amazing stunts and crawling through windows and stuff to steal things. Harsh and Tiger start a strange cat and mouse game where they send each other strange messages, once Tiger realizes there is a mastermind trying to catch him. Lots of taunting phone calls and stuff. Finally Harsh figures out that Tiger is trying to bring down a corrupt official and starts secretly working with him under the noses of the government. With Harsh telling him what to do, Tiger pulls off a final amazing stunt that both reveals the sins of the official and fakes his own death. After seeing Harsh seemingly sad at the death, asking for days off work, we see him go home where Tiger is waiting for him in a “this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” moment. Harsh and Tiger, united, an extra-governmental force for good.

Also, I would absolutely watch a movie that is just close ups of Harsh’s face as a voice over explains his thoughts. Come to think of it, that’s kind of all Bhavesh Joshi was for large sections.

  6. Well, that promo was really boring and I don’t know what to think. I really enjoyed Dhoom 2 so if it’s like that, I will be on board. But I hated Bang Bang so there’s that.

Dhoom 2 promos did look a lot better than this though and I would any day prefer seeing Abhishek and Aishwarya in the movie instead of Tiger.

    • Thank you! I was beginning to doubt myself after Filmikudhi said it looked fun. On the other hand, I loved Bang Bang so if it is like that then I will still love it.

And I think I might be slightly Tiger over Aish, but never Tiger over Abhi.

Hrithik looks good, agree about his hair. Prefer this Hrithik to noble teacher Hrithik any day of the week.
