Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo Teaser: Chhapaak Take Note, Now THIS Is a Good Trailer!!!!!

On yesterday’s post about Chhapaak, I said that it was a bad trailer but could still be a good movie. On this post, it’s the opposite. Great trailer, might be a terrible movie.

As I said yesterday, a trailer can have three goals:

  1. Accurately convey what the film is about so people can decide if they want to see it
  2. Accurately convey the mood of the film so people can decide if they want to see it
  3. Be a spectacular fun impactful thing on its own so that people remember it and driven to see the movie.

And now Allu Arjun’s new trailer has come out and it is sooooooooooooooo much option 3!!!!! I have no idea what this movie is about, I have no idea what the actual mood of the film will be, but I love this trailer and totally want to watch the film that it suggests it is about.

The trailer seems to hint at Allu Arjun as a returning prince taking over a corporation, and also there is a bit with him in a village, so possibly the classic Telugu plot of “stranger appears and slowly his backstory is revealed combining gangsters, urban fights, village fights, and eventually taking over a massive corporation and being rich and also possibly uniting the Family.”

But heck, it could be not that at all! The edits are so quick and so random that these same shots could be included in a movie that has a totally different narrative than is implied. Who knows!

Same with the mood. I am in love with this trailer because of all the cheeky light hearted meta touches, like someone saying “songs are okay, but we need a dialogue” followed by a shot of Allu Arjun carefully thinking before saying a punchline. And ending with the random yet awesome image of Allu Arjun holding a cock and lighting his cigarette with a burning knife. But that could just be clever editing of the trailer, the film itself could still be straight forward and serious.

But no matter how the film turns out to be (I’m hoping still lighthearted and silly because Allu tends heavily towards meta), that doesn’t take away that this is a very VERY good trailer. It shows that the team spent time and thought and took it seriously, and they came up with a trailer that would get people talking and excited. It certainly got me talking, I don’t even usually post about Telugu trialers!

  1. Trailer-cutting has become a new trend in Telugu industry. A lot of film editors and also, budding short film makes have got into Trailer-making and trying different things. Big audio release functions are replaced with teaser, pre-teaser, first-cut, song-teaser, song release, etc and the youtube View stats is the new brag among fans

    • How interesting! This trailer/teaser is definitely very very good. I hope Hindi film starts following their example, a trailer is such an important part of selling a film.

      • Naveen Nooli is a prominent figure – worked for 500+ trailers, before moving to Editing department – worked for Julayi, Nannaku Prematho, Rangasthalam, etc.
        From an interview –
Naveen adds, “I love cutting trailers and teasers because it introduces a film to the audience. Also the decision to open a layer in the film…what comes first, next, , how to raise the expectations and so on is all a satisfying process. But when it comes to the movie, it is about meeting the deadline. We worked day and night and at the last minute for Nannaku Prematho. I went to the location only when an important scene was being shot. We edit the scenes in every schedule so that it doesn’t get hectic in the final schedule and later.”

    • She didn’t bother me that much, except that it took me the whole trailer to recognize her, and that was irritating.
