Happy Birthday Akshaye!!!! Here Are My Favorite Songs of Yours!

Akshaye! Great guy, started out super young as a youthful love interest hero, by his late 20s had graduated to kind of more interesting and original work, then took a 4 year sabbatical, and returned as a powerhouse of a character actor.

This is from 1997, the year Akshaye was launched and made 3 films in a row. His first starring role was in this one, as part of a love triangle with Madhuri Dixit (coincidentally, launched opposite his father about 10 years earlier). Anyway, check out Madhuri’s great hair and all black look! “O Baby Don’t Break My Heart”

Same era, this time with Aishwarya, Akshaye looking terrible in khakis and Aish looking fantastic in a simple cotten Salwar, “Aa Ab Laut Chalen”

Finally, my favorite Akshaye era! When he was a little more confident in himself and taking kind of off-beat hero roles instead of just the standard. Don’t forget his cameo in his brother’s great spoof movie Bollywood/Hollywood.

Dil Chahta Hai, of course, where his one featured song wasn’t the best, but otherwise he quietly dominated the movie, “Kaise Hai Ye Rut”

Also, Hulchul! My own little favorite. First for this song that turns romantic by accident, after starting with them over-acting and faking it to trick the other one, “Rafta Rafta”

And then my favorite item song, like, EVER, “Lut Gayee”. All Akshaye has to do is stride around and look dignified and not notice people, but he does it very well.

Same era, Akshaye took up the role of the cynical investigator for one of those “young couple trapped in a mystery movies, with Shahid and Kareena playing the charming young couple. The best bit is the end credits song, where he just coolly refuses to dance, “China Town”

And then he left, disappeared for years. But now we have him back! YAAAAAAAAAY! Only, no more songs. He’s playing all these cool character parts now, the kind that doesn’t get songs. Well, except for promotion songs, look how neat he looks in “Ittefaq Se”!

    • I think he can’t play dumb. So when he was the naive young romantic lead, it didn’t work, because he just felt too intelligent to be that naive. But now that he is playing all these super smart detectives, I love him.

        • Perfect for slightly too smart for his own good detective roles though. I would happily see him play that for the rest of his career.

  1. Ah, where did I put that Bollywood/Hollywood DVD? It’s been ages since I watched it. Wonder what I’d think about it now.

I just went and checked for your review. You didn’t happen to notice that the simple plot kind of follows the main steps of”Pretty Woman”, did you? Yeah, I think the teachers from our seminar back then were kind of obsessed with that.

    • Oh yeah, definitely Pretty Woman. I feel like the film maybe even referred to that at some point? there was some conscious nod I am forgetting?

Anyway, for me it really held up! Looks a little cheap and out of date now, and I think Lisa Ray is actually terrible in it, but otherwise super good.

  2. Heh!! No songs from Taal ??!! They are so beautiful. Btw song “Kaise Hai Ye Rut” is my favourite.I really don’t care about songs like “Lut gaye”.
I don’t even remember him in the movie Bollywood/Hollywood.I think I need to re-watch it. Also that man should never make an attempt to even dance. To be fair his dance in Bollywood/Hollywood is good but still he must never dance in movies.
Arre haan how are you? It’s been a long time since we talked. Hope you and your family are staying safe.Take care.Tell your dog I said Hi.

    • Oh wow, I forgot Taal songs! And that soundtrack is so lovely.

I am good, the dog and I moved in with my parents for now so I don’t go insane in isolation. He’s having a wonderful time with two new people to play with.

      • Oh the songs from Taal are indeed lovely. I can listen to them on a loop. Good to hear you moved in with your parents. Your dog will have a jolly time with them.
