Happy Saturday! Today I go from my parents’ apartment, to my apartment. And then tomorrow I go back again. SUCH EXCITEMENT!!!!
Things to talk about!
It’s Poetry Month! Which I know because my mother celebrates by printing out a new poem every day and tacking it up on the building door for all the neighbors to enjoy. Anyway, what is your favorite poem? And/or, what is the most poetic Indian film song you like?
Here’s a poem my Mom has stuck up by the kitchen sink so I see it every time I was my hands:
‘Sometimes’
Sometimes things don’t go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don’t fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.
A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can’t leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.
Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.
And for poetic Indian film song, I’ll go with “Kal Ho Na Ho” (although I have a little voice that tells me I should go for something from Pyaasa)
POETRY! Talk about it!
Other stuff to talk about, ALTBalaji! Somehow I keep forgetting it exists (poor ALTBalaji), but so far as I can tell, the website is up and running with subtitles and I can watch Mentalhood with Karisma if I want. Should I? Do I want?
And finally, MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION. ANGIE!!!! What do you want for your birthday on Wednesday????? We will give you ANYTHING!!!! Your life is so hard right now (for those who don’t read regularly, Angie is in Italy with a small son and husband). ANYTHING YOU WANT! THAT IS AVAILABLE VIRTUALLY!!!! INTERNET CAKE!!!

Poetry. I am not an expert on poetry, but as a former book seller I had to know some basics. The first and perhaps only poetry book I really fell in love with was Ted Kooser’s The Blizzard Voices. But I those poems aren’t happy. So, because it is short, I’ll share this tidbit from Leonard Cohen:
the creature who says
“me” and “mine”
need not bend down in shame-
along with lakes and mountains
the ego is created
and divine

There have been these poetry exchanges going around, one sent me to my bookshelf yesterday and I found this Billy Collins poem I really like for right now.
Days
Each one is a gift, no doubt,
mysteriously placed in your waking hand
or set upon your forehead
moments before you open your eyes.

I left Albie Dog in charge of my parents. He has to keep them happy, active, and not killing each other. Also, he is under orders to block the door when they try to go out and distract them with his cuteness..
And I got to sleep until 7:30 this morning! Instead of having a little dog breathing in my face at 6am wanting breakfast.
The real reason I had to leave him back is that I am doing a car swap. My parents only live a couple of miles from my place, I had to drive over because I was bringing so much stuff to their place (rice, toilet paper, clothes, etc.). But now that my car is empty, I wanted to drive it back to my neighborhood where I could park it more safely. So I drove over yesterday and parked it nicely, and today I am excited about walking a couple miles in gorgeous sunny weather back over to my parents’. Albie Dog would not be great with a 2 mile walk (he gets distracted by smells and squirrels an awful lot), so I left him back with Mom and Dad.

Dogs are a little like toddlers. Few people want to walk two miles with a toddler, at least not without a kid carrying backpack. There is a woman who walks around our neighborhood with a dog in a stroller. She did this even before the stay at home orders, but I don’t think she is going two miles.

I was so tempted to do that! He’s a very little dog, so it wouldn’t be a problem to push or even carry him. But it would look ridiculous.
