Watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Right Here in Half an Hour!!!!

I may have totally messed this up by scheduling it very last minute, and then moving the start time an hour and a half earlier, and scheduling it on a half hour just to confuse people. But I hope this post helps. The conversation will be here, in the comments on this post, in half an hour (10:30pm Chicago time). Hope to see you here!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai! Watch it on Netflix, or youtube, or googleplay, or Prime in some places. Or on your DVD. Start playing at 10:30pm Chicago time and I will start commenting then.

I’m excited! This will be like the first time I watched it, on my laptop in my dorm room after my roommate had gone home for the weekend, late late on a Saturday night.

  1. I do love that the friendship between Tina and Anjali transfers to Anjali-Anjali, especially once big Anjali realizes Tina died and she sees her friend in little Anjali. So much love.

  2. I love that this is how Kajol finds out. Private, no one tells her, and she can process all her feelings in her own time. Karan could have gone for a juicier option with someone telling her, but this is sooooooooo much better.

  3. The voicemail about the party always stuck out to me. There is zero other evidence he’s out partying with other ladies at night when he’s home.

    • But it’s also in context of his bedroom being a disaster and other evidence of being home alone. So I took it to mean that messy bedroom and bad habits of his mother and daughter being gone, go along with going out to parties.

  4. In case anyone doesn’t know, yes Kajol and Shahrukh improvised this whole thing. And it was Shahrukh’s idea to have it be a dialogueless scene.

  5. BENCH SCENE!!!! Every Karan Johar film except ADHM has an important bench scene. And thank goodness, I’m not the only one who noticed, someone asked him about it in an interview with ADHM and he said he just didn’t find a good place for it. Although I would argue the rooftop conversation scenes fulfill the same purpose.

  6. Coming to a favorite scene, when Rahul and Anjalin meet again. Every time he runs across that bridge I’m reminded that Farah said every one of his directors should make him run because he runs so beautifully.

But this moment, this mostly ad-libbed reunion is just so awkward and perfect.

  7. Being shallow for a moment, I love the way Kajol’s hair looks in these scenes! I think it’s just natural, mix of straight and curls and humidity makes it happen, and I love it.

  8. Shahrukh brought a complete set of suits to summer camp with him? Kajol’s in a sari, but then she is a dance teacher.

  9. Do not like Kajol’s hair here, I think it was straightened or at least blown out, and then those stupid pins put in. NO!

  10. Good song for letting us answer the question of what color looks best on Kajol. I’m going with either black or purple. FIGHT ME!

  11. Farida is the best. I’ll try not keep saying that over and over but I love her in this movie. Her dancing and the way she echoes Kajol’s arm movements while she watches her dance from the audience. She makes every scene she’s in better.

    • I didn’t really think about it, but the camp scenes really have a small cast. Without Farida in there, it could feel like just Kajol and Shahrukh isolated with a sea of children. She adds texture.

      • Yes, and she gives little Anjali someone to play off of and talk to and plot with so we know what’s going on. She’s great with little Sana.

  12. Oooh. I forgot Salman got such a clear message that Anjali doesn’t really love him. From Reema no less. I didn’t give Reema enough credit.

Going to have to tap out soon. It’s 2am and I have to do active stuff tomorrow. Hanging on through charades though!

  13. Ignoring the see through shirt, Shah Rukh is at peak beauty in this scene. And love love love the interactions with the kids and the emotional tight rope with Kajol.

    • Technical question: all those close-up reaction shots at the end, how many times did they have to shoot that scene and get all those emotions right in order to get all the shots from all the angles so they could edit them together? It seems so natural in the moment, but with all those cuts they must have had to do it a bunch of times?

      • Huh. I hadn’t thought about it before. I know usually Karan likes to shoot stuff once in the old school “save film” style. So usually he has actors stop while he resets the camera, or else sets up the cameras so he can get all the shots he wants in one go. With the gazebo scene, my guess is 5 minutes of footage shot in one go (complete with the camera zooming in and out and moving on a track), and then edited down. Probably with Karan shouting out as they did it “Now remember Salman! Now look confused!” to guide them through the emotions.

  15. 10 years later, Little Anjali goes for an internship at old family friend Salman’s office. She hasn’t seen him in 10 years but Shahrukh called him up to ask him to “look out” for Little Anjali. Salman starts insisting on taking her out to lunch and for weekend fun and stuff, Little Anjali falls in love thinking he is courting her, but really it is just him doing his duty for her parents. She finds out the truth and cries and cries. And then other stuff happens and Salman realizes he is in love with her and they get married. What do you think?

      • But not if he backs off! Like, that’s why he feels bad about it, because he is worried about abuse of power. Maybe that’s the second half? She says she is in love with him, he shuts it down immediately and removes himself as her supervisor, and once he starts to feel the same way, feels like he can’t do anything to act on it because he thinks the power dynamic might have affected her feelings for him?

  16. This is such a beautifully shot scene and touching moment and all that, I can see Karan falling in love with it and not noticing that it DOES NOTHING TO GET US TO THE CONCLUSION!!!!! Shahrukh doesn’t propose, or indicate he wants her to not marry Salman, or anything! It’s just a pretty moment!
