Friday Watchalong: Bunty Aur Babli! Watch Here With Us Starting at 3pm Chicago Time

Yaaaaaay, one of my favorite movies. And possibly the first Indian movie I saw in theaters (I say “possibly”, because I’m not sure if film festivals count or not). Anyway, I am excited to share it with all of you!

It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s a wee bit long. But the time moves easily. You can watch it on Prime but you probably shouldn’t (I don’t trust Prime). Instead, try buying or renting from youtube or googleplay, or the einthusan UHD version (not standard version, that doesn’t have subtitles and looks a little cruddy too).

I’ll start the conversation at 3pm and then you all can just keep commenting along with me here!

  1. My family excursion is going longer than expected and I won’t make it back to the house in time to join you. Come Monday I’ll have too much free time and I look forward to watching the movie and reading all your comments then. Be extra clever for me! (No pressure…) I miss you DCIB community.

  2. I’ve had to rearrange a little.. Our only computer with a DVD drive just broke down. So now I’m watching on youtube. Amazingly, the file I got only has German subtiles (as it’s being sold in Germany), so I may quote things a little different from you guys.

  3. I love Rani as a character to watch, maybe as a friend in real life too, but don’t make me be her parent. She seems exhausting

    • No, I was thinking the same thing! It’s a really well done balance, neither parent set is actually cruel, they just can’t imagine a happy life beyond the life they have planned for their kids, so the solution is “change yourself to fit the life I want you to have” not “change your life”.

  4. So perfect that the film gets “bad” conman out of the way right at the start. What happens to her at the competition and Abhishek at the meeting, that’s just wrong, a whole different thing from stealing money and goods that can be replaced from people who can afford it.

    • I remember in college all of us talking about how depressed we were when he left her for Aish, because Rani was clearly better for him.

    • This reminds me of my parents visiting India in the 1970s and being warned that it was “dry” so they couldn’t get alchol. And then arriving at every house/restaurant/hotel and being promptly offered alcohol. Things are not always what they appear!

  5. I think Abhishek already had a thing for her, and that’s why he invited her to join him. Even though he pretends he doesn’t.

  6. Love how we already see the balance between them, Abhishek has the planning and control, Rani has the raw brilliance that makes the cons work. Plus, she inspires him.

  7. I may change my mind, but right now I feel like my favorite part of this movie is the way they become friends and partners right away, but take forever to realize they are in love. Like, if it was the same relationship, but they were partners in a used car dealership I would be just as happy.

    • You beat me to it! And if I had a time machine, I would make a Sholay prequel that was exactly this with Dharam playing Rani and Big B playing Abhishek

  8. Sorry. Had to deal with some pesky work that don’t seem to understand that put up a busy signal to watch a movie, they should leave me alone!
