Challenge! What One Rahman Song Would You Use to Prove His Genius?

This is an Actual Question! I showed 99 Songs at my Friends Movie Night last night and my new friend/guest did not believe based on 99 Songs that Rahman was a genius. So now I have to send her songs all day at work to prove that he IS a genius. Give me ideas!

This is my favorite Rahman song, but I’m not sure if it is showy enough?

What would you pick?

  1. I would pick Boys just because Shankar’s fondness for granduer and the cinematography make all songs a overall good experience even if you don’t understand the language.

  2. Just…how can anyone with ears think A R Rahman isn’t a genius? I am honestly baffled. Suggestions if you haven’t shown these yet:

    – Dil Gira Dafatan
    – Bombay Theme
    – Kannalanae
    – Usure Pogudhey – from Raavanan
    – Mental Manadhil
    – Konjun Nilavu (Chandralekha) – from Thiruda Thiruda, either the movie version or Neeti Mohan’s version, both are FANTASTIC!
    – Saarattu Vandiyila
    – Patakha Guddi
    – Ishq Bina
    – Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera

  3. Rockstar soundtrack.
I was going to mention only my beloved Kun Faya Kun but later I thought that one should listen to entire album to see how good A R Rahman is.

    • Kun Faya Kun and “Sadda Haq” in the same movie is amazing. Too bad it’s such a Ranbir-y film.

    • I didn’t show her Roja, I showed her 99 Songs. I agree, Roja is a winner!

  4. 2 lesser known Tamil albums, that I liked because they were different than the usual stuff. It is for director Bharathi Raja who usually prefers rural themed songs. A challenge for Rahman !!!
    Karuthamma
    Taj Mahal

  5. For me, one of the things that’s special about Rahman is how he builds a symphony of the different rhythm instruments. There are probably even better showcases of that, but the “Taal” soundtrack does live up to its name.

    • Oooo, I forgot about Taal! Yes, that is a good one. Definitely will have to try it on her today.
