I am going to go INSANE!!! I’m like a race horse in the starting gate, for the next 5 hours I am SO CLOSE to starting the actual moving process, but just not quite there yet. UGH! Distract me distract me! Give me questions I can write long long answers and forget myself because I love writing long long answers.
Do you have a particular movie you want me to write a fanfic remake of? Now is the time!
Is there a movie, Indian or otherwise, that you want me to give a lengthy lecture about?
Is there a movie star, Indian or otherwise, who you want me to discuss in great detail?
Is there a historical event, Indian or otherwise, that you would like my take on?
Do you want me to tell you minute by minute my moving plan for this weekend? Because that’s fun, right?
Tell us your moving plan.

Thank you for asking! Right now my car has a bedroll, a floor sofa, a TV, and a laundry basket of dishes and bath stuff shoved into it. Today after my call at 1pm, I am zipping over to the new place and emptying the car. Then letting in the cleaners, watching them clean, and sleeping in my OWN apartment tonight. Tomorrow afternoon I do another run over to my parents and grab the rest of my clothes and small things like that, bring those into the apartment. Tomorrow night my friends help me bring the few pieces of heavy furniture I am inheriting from my parents into the new place. Saturday, I go to the hardware store with my friend to help her pick paint and maybe buy a gate so Albie Dog can enjoy his dog run. Sunday and Monday, I buy groceries and generally organize, and my friends paint and measure and stuff. By Tuesday, I am fully in and don’t need to bring in anything more or unpack or ANYTHING. And I can move on to fencing the yard and other projects like that.

Is there a Hindi movie you have seen but not reviewed?

In my life? Yes! In the past year? I don’t think so.

I was hoping writing review would be distracting but having to remember movies from a long time ago can be taxing and I don’t want to add any more to your plate. Hmmm… I’ll try to think of other distracting things.

Thank you! I will also take a calming pill I think. The doctor said 1 to 2 a day as needed, so of course I take one a month. But this seems worthy of my monthly pill, right? Maybe even 2 pills!

Yupp! Take the pill. You have to drive shortly so maybe just start with one.

I don’t have to drive for THREE MORE HOURS! I’m gonna DIE! Three hours of twiddling my fingers!!!!

Which is why I said start with one now!! Hopefully you’ve already taken it!
Did you see that Naseeruddin Shah was hospitalized with pneumonia? Hopefully he is okay.

Oh great! Something else to worry about!!! Well, at least his recent filmography is in good shape. If he had gotten sick and had to quit acting two years ago, his last film could have been Ayaari which is so so so so bad.

Are you there yet??? I get mixed up with times, being 6 hours ahead, I think, which means probably still one hour to go, right? Maybe not, just had one of those days at work where you have 1000 conversations and been on the go all day but its gone into whiteout – actually a lot of days are like that. But hey, I work in a church and we were so jazzed because yesterday the UK Methodists voted in favour of marriage equality, so come the autumn we may celebrate gay church weddings, yay! I haven’t any sensible questions about indian film due to being such a newb, sorry. I’m concerned that the glory is fading from it though, what do you think? If you’re still in any state to think?

I am not there yet! I am crawling through the last aaaaaaaaaaaagonizing moments. UGH!
Also, yaaaaaaaaaaaay for marriage equality! But boooooooooo for my church’s income. I’m UU and we get so much wedding money because we’ve always done same-sex ceremonies. Now folks have all kinds of options, our monopoly is disappearing.
I think the industry is shifting suddenly right now. 20 years ago in the early 2000s when I found it, it was the peak of the international dominance of Hindi film. Internet, global releases, all of that stuff. And then the non-Hindi films started eating away at that same international market, and it started going the other way with American studios breaking into India, and then streaming made it even more of a mish-mosh. The glory days of massive theatrical releases and Godlike Stars might be fading, but something else will come up to replace them.

Ahh, we are very late to the party I know, but at least we didn’t have to spend today seriously reviewing our employment options. Are you there yet now? Is Albie going with you? I have to go and have supper, will check back after- good luck!

Thank you for the luck! I am now there, the car is almost completely unpacked into a messy pile in the corner, the a/c is on (thank goodness) and I am sitting on the floor waiting for cleaners.

How was first night? Hopefully the high-tension subsided and you had a good sleep – actually, hopefully still having it! (time diff again!)

I did! High tension and misery lasted until Albie Dog and I were finally alone and I was able to unpack a little and get settled

I don’t know whether you’ve already started moving by now, but I would love for you to discuss Cary Grant in detail at some point. After Shahrukh, he might be the only other actor I’ve fallen so in love with! Which is insane to think about, since with Shahrukh it’s been a 20 year journey of me growing from a child to adult, while I’ve only discovered Grant last month! I’d love to know his place as a star in classic Hollywood, in context of other actors, his appeal with audiences at the time and now, anything you care to discuss. Of course, I am reading up on him myself too.

Well, there’s this post:
https://dontcallitbollywood.com/2021/05/30/2-part-question-what-is-your-favorite-cary-grant-movie-and-what-grant-movie-do-you-want-to-see-srk-remake/
But I will say that one thing I love about Cary Grant and think he shares with Shahrukh is his appeal to children. He doesn’t make kid’s movies, but somehow his onscreen presence feels like a child’s image of an adult, if you see what I mean? Very much “that is what I want to be when I grow up”.

Well there was nothing child-like about the effect he had on me, I found him attractive and sexy, in Bringing Up Baby of all things!! But I get what you mean. It feels weird to feel this way when I think that he wasn’t even alive when I was born!
Of course I loved that post and all the discussions! Having seen more classic films now, it strikes me how the classic stars had to have more talent and charisma than current actors because the films are all dialogue and emotions with almost no distractions like locations or action. I don’t how many actors today can hold my attention like that.

I kind of agree, have been feeling this more and more – it ties in with the feeling that the glamour and glory sun of indian film is setting with the Khans – though new forms will arise
