Saturday WatchAlong: Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin! For FilmiKudhi’s BIRTHDAY! 7:30am Chicago Time, on Einthusan

Good Morning! I am ready! I got my google chrome toggle working, my coffee is percelating, the dog got to go in the backyard, life is good! Let’s do this! Margaret watching a movie for the first time on a watchalong!!!!

Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin

Aamir has a cute hat, Pooja has very 90s hair, that’s basically all I know about it.

In a few minutes, at 7:30am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and we will go along from there.

  1. I love that Aamir is willing to make a fool of himself. But then when he thinks she is about to get into a dangerous situation, all of a sudden he turns serious. So so good.

  2. Has anyone seen “The Sure Thing”? It’s an early Rob Reiner rom-com from before When Harry Met Sally, and it is another semi-remake. Uptight A-student college girl and average college boy travel together across country. He is going to visit his friend who promises there is a girl who is a “sure thing” to have sex with him. So sort of the opposite of the usual structure, this time it is the boy who is running towards love. But otherwise the same, girl is a little naive and boy is more wordly.

  3. When she lies down on the bench, I was yeeted forcibly into the past by the sight of those black tights and pointy-toed shoes. My grandmother used to dress me up in the little-girl version of those clothes!

    • And also, very different, a version in which the heroine is running away in an attempt to please her family, not rebel against it. So her journey is to finding rebellion, not understanding that there has to be a reason to rebel.

      • Good point. But to me at the end, both are sheltered, rich girls who think they are trying to search for something they think they want but realize what they actually want as they go through this journey. They also, don’t change because of the guy. They journey helps them learn more about themselves. But in the end, they are still themselves, just more evolved versions of themselves. Not sure if that makes sense.

  4. Oh man, they aren’t doing the cute thing from the original where she wears the tops and he wears the bottoms. Am I remembering that right? I am, aren’t I?

  5. Wait, so are they now both consciously aware that they are falling in love with each other? What’s gonna happen for the second half of the movie then?

  6. I appreciate that throughout this movie, Aamir keeps telling her plainly that Deepak is a bad guy but doesn’t pressure her into believing him. She has to see it on her own.

    • Oh, and also, despite his feelings about the guy, he still helps her because she still thinks she is in love with Deepak (and of course he wants the story 😉 but it stopped being about that a long time ago).

        • YES! That’s what I was thinking seeing the scene that happened a few minutes ago when he tells her that she is so used to asking for what she wants, but does she actually know what she wants. As much as she is set to marry this guy, soon she is going to want to run away from him just as fast. She is running away from herself and needs to figure out what she really wants.

  7. Okay, this is how they make the movie last 3 hours even though they are already in love. Got it now. Kill some time on this subplot, then get back to the “who will she choose? Will he admit his love?” part.

  8. Just looked up the original writer. He was a newspaper man!!! So the newspaper plot was based on his real experiences. Also, he wrote the stories that became the films The Wild Party and Harvey Girls. So, lots of strong complicated heroines with sexual fantasies.

  9. I thought of another one! Chennai Express. Very different in that she is the more wordly one in that one. But it’s also the same in that she is running away and he is along for the ride and they start to fall in love but he respects her independence too much to say anything.

  10. Hum dil De Chuke Sanam! Except that one is kind of a drag because it’s a legit love triangle and we aren’t sure which one she will pick.
