Finally got around to watching trailers! And I discovered the biggest difference between the two movies, I can spell “Badhai Do” without thinking, I can’t spell “Gehraiyaan” for the life of me. Have to search for “new Deepika movie” instead.
Badhai Do
Interesting construction on the trailer. Everything is linked together to seemingly tell the story of a man who is very in love with a woman and willing to marry her, knowing she is in a relationship with another woman, just to have a chance. They get married, he fights with the girlfriend, the family pressures them to have kids, etc. etc. And then in the last 5 seconds, the trailer reveals that the man is gay as well. So, now what is the plot? Or rather, what is the conflict? If they both get married for the same reason, then where’s the conflict between the two characters? Is it going to be one of them wants to stay in the closet and one wants to come out? If so, which? Will Rajkummar get a boyfriend ever? Also, should I be sighing about the girlfriend being central Asian in appearance, or do you think that is just a coincidence and not some sort of Orientalist thingy?

It’s too many vowels! All the vowels shoved together, plus also Y. No one can spell this! It’s a stupid title and I hate it and it makes me feel stupid.
In other news, I may also hate the plot. Well, not hate, have issues. I can’t tell if it is supposed to be a movie where we don’t sympathize with anyone involved (which is always hard to watch, because why would you watch people you don’t like?), or a movie where we are supposed to sympathize and I can’t. I would very much enjoy it if the movie itself turns around and we realize that we aren’t supposed to sympathize with Dips and Hot Dude. That this is a story of an ambitious terrible man who ruined lives to succeed, and a bored woman who fell into a fantasy without caring who she hurt, and their victims are a sweet sheltered young woman who thought she found love and a husband who was just being a husband.
Along those same lines, I also think the big focus on Sex is (hopefully) meaningful. This isn’t like KANK where the affair started through time together, talking together, really SEEING each other, and then progressed to sex. This seems to be just attractive people making out on a beach because they can’t resist each other and nothing else.

I actually have hopes for Gehraayiaan. It seems to be shot really well, and I like Deepika when she’s doing contemporary stuff. Plus, heard rumors it is based off Match Point, and done by Shakun Batra, so it sounds like it should be good. Let’s see.

Ooo! I didn’t spoil myself, but I just googled Match Point and it is labeled as a “thriller”. That’s kind of where I was hoping this would go, the affair felt toxic and dangerous to me so if it ends up in a form of violence, that would work with the tone.

I have the same suspicions as Nisha that someone is going to drown in Gehraiyaan, the music is too thriller-like and there are SO MANY waves. If someone doesn’t drown then I will sue. Also, at least now it is certain that this movie will pull the heartstrings when it comes to Ananya. I just want to give her a hug.
I both have hope that Badhai Do is good, but will keep my reservations until I’ve seen it. The twist at the end really changed the whole story. Such a good trailer!

Or it could be Ananaya! There was a sort of semi-drowning looking scene in the trailer and I saw a pink shirt. So maybe it could be her.

Also, there is the word Gehraiyaan in ‘Dil Gira Dafatan’ in Delhi 6. So, easy to remember with the song rhythym. That’s how I do it.

I watched Gehraiyaan trailer only now and must confess I don’t know if I liked it. On one hand I have a big girl crush on Deepika so seeing her in a sexy role with a sexy actor is nice. But on the other hand there is also Anaya, and the plot , apart of sexy scenes, looks boring.

Ha I was just thinking whether you had talked about Gehraiyaan here! I’m quite excited for this just because after Kapoor & Sons, I’m willing to trust Shakun Batra to tell interesting stories. Even the trailer for that gave the impression of a love triangle with two brothers. This has hints of family secrets and tension scattered as well. And Naseer showing up was unexpected! I also love the themes and motifs related to sea. I don’t know if anyone’s going to drown, but I’m hoping it means there’s much more going on beneath the surface than we think.
In Badhai Do, I’m hoping that by making Bhoomi’s girlfriend from the north-east, they want to address the prejudice against people from that region. But I may be giving them too much credit.

I can’t wait to watch Gehraaiyaan. Also, not sure if this helps but it means depth. I too trust Shakun Batra. I really enjoyed Kapoor and Sons and Ek Main Aur Ek Tu. I think just like those movies, it’ll be a film with complex, messy characters, that are very much human and make mistakes. I am hoping there is some mystery in it.
I like Ananya and Deepika and I think this is such a great role for both of them. Ananya gets to rely on her youth, naïveté, and fragility. Deepika gets to rely on her maturity and complexity and she can be somehow likable (or at least someone the audience can empathize with) even in a messy, potentially unlikable role. I cannot wait to watch this! I feel like there will be so much to talk about.
I’m curious about Badhai Do. I didn’t have many feelings about that one.

I can see why you might think that because I hate KANK and the infidelity in it. SRK and Rani deserve each other in KANK, in that they can continue to make each other miserable for the rest of their lives. I am also not a fan of Silsila and hate it’s “happy” ending. Same with Rishi in Doosra Aadmi. Maybe I am comfortable with how Shakun Batra would portray infidelity vs Yash Chopra and Karan Johar? I don’t know if I’ll like anyone in Gehraiyaan but I’m going into it expecting it to be a messy, emotionally complex film. I think with Silsila and KANK, it’s all glossy and shiny on the outside with a messy subject and a forced happy ending.

That would be me. Infidelity is my kryptonite, I get mad and hate them all. That said, I’m glad Siddhant Chaturvedi is getting juicy roles and I missed Deepika. I’ll just need you to tell me if I can watch without wanting to toss them all overboard into deep water.
Badhai Do looks fun. Could start out cute and wind up being terrible but I’d give it a go to find out.

If the infidelity people are Bad People according to the film, are you able to watch it? Like, if you can boo and hiss them? Because my hope for this is that they turn out to be awful folks who we can enjoy being destroyed.

And I won’t spoil Match Point, but I guess if you don’t want to give too much away, a trailer for that could have been stuck with just “an affair happens”, too.

I’m too old! I’m too old! What happened to all the movies where the kids fall in love, the parents disapprove, a hundred songs, a thousand dances, a million costume changes, then everybody is happy at the end? All this cutting-edge, woke-angst material driving the plot. I miss pointless, violence, horror, hot guys and virginal women, directors with no message to bless us with. I crave sillyness and romance and good old stories that have nothing to do with my real life.
I’ll watch Badhai Do and Gehraaiyyaaaan anyway. They have to be better than Marvel’s The Eternals.

Yeah, I think maybe only telugu industry still makes this kind of movies (also Bhojpuri, but their movies are never subtitiled and from I have seen all look like poorer copies of 90′ Hindi films).
I’m now watching Akhanda (telugu). Have you seen it? If not, I recommend it. I have seen only first 15 minutes so far, but it already had :
bad guy vs army shooting in the jungle
a murder
a birth of twins
a Hindu priest taking away one of the twins
a miracle
and super cool entry of the protagonist (with two awesome bulls)
All that in only 15 minutes!

But I have to add I’m not a fan of Balakrishna. He was okay in his younger days, and like Rajinikanth, he can still command the screen. But it’s time to retire the superhero roles. He’s bulked up (not on a good way) his dance moves are stiff, and why, oh why, is his female costar young enough to be his granddaughter?

It’s my first Balakrishna movie and I’m just enjoying the craziness without asking questions. I saw another 10 minutes of the movie before lunch and there is a beautifully choreographed fight just after Balakrishna’s entry. I usually don’t care about fights but this one was cool.

I’m more excited about Gehraiyaan than Badhai Do but I think it’s just because I’m interested in what Shakun Batra will come up with after Kapoor & Sons. Also even if the movie sucks, the visuals look pretty enough to make it through. I missed seeing Deepika in a present day role!
Plus in general, I’m tired of the Ayushmann/Rajkummar small town message movies. I feel like Hindi cinema has become just those type of movies and biopics.

Frankly the plot of badhai ho seems so forced……unlike badhai ho, where everything was so organic…moreover how can you justifying a gay and a lesbian marrying each other even as a shadow marriage…..it’s not even a plot. If you want to show case them eventually coming out of closet , that could have been done without marriage too. They could have masqueraded as lovers, but marriage? Even if we sideline its social aspects like setting a wrong precedent, the marriage doesn’t make sense except when you want to force it on us. If you eventually want them to fight with society for their respective love, then just fight it out, do it, why to get married, then eventually fight with society n then get divorced and then be with their respective partners?
Regarding gehraiyaan, the trailer was underwhelming , but I think we are in for shakun…so let’s see. But I somehow never been able to like siddhant except MC sher…..and KANK was better.

A lavender marriage really is the perfect jumping off point for an Indian movie, so I’m really excited for Badhaai Do. I would imagine it’s going to be hijinks and sneaking around, ending with a big coming out/acceptance moment, definitely for Bhumi, maybe for Rajkumar too. Surprise appearance by Ayushmann as a boyfriend? That would be fun.
I’ll watch Gehraiyaan eventually too, but not as excited. I am rooting for Ananya though, and I hope she’s really honed her craft with this one.

I’m mostly excited to find out how Gehraiyaan ends. I suspect I will be frustrated by the characters but also curious what happens to them.
