Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking and Listening to on the Equinox?

Happy Autumnal Equinox! It’s either tonight or tomorrow depending on how you count things.

I’ll start!

Watching: I’ve been binging the BBC show Silent Witness. Which is delightfully predictable and soothing dreck. Nice British accents and stuff, but still so stupid and predictable I can halfway ignore it while I do a puzzle.

Reading: So far, my favorite coverage of the royal funeral was the articles about the spider crawling across the casket. I look forward to a follow up on the life of the spider over the next few days, and then finally the death of the spider with Eulogies remembering that moment it crawled across the royal casket.

Thinking: I’ve got so much organizing for fall stuff scheduled over the next few days! Someone’s coming to take away the elliptical I don’t use any more because it’s more fun to walk in the park, and then I can set up my dollhouse where the elliptical is now. And my chest of drawers died, so I bought a new one from the Habitat for Humanity resale shop and that’s getting delivered. And the Boiler Man is coming to turn on the heat for the winter. And most importantly, I am putting cobwebs up on our fence for Halloween!

Listening: I got an email about new greeting cards on sale for Rosh Hashana and now this is stuck in my head:

Tashaan! I love her in Tashaan! Crazy over the top and also sincere and also just having fun with it.

  1. I would have said “Tashaan” too! She’s done well as in some more ~serious roles~ (“Omkara,” “Talaash”), but it’s fun to watch people have fun ( ; I loved the rapport between her and Saif in that movie.

  2. I started watching The Crown ever since the Queen’s death. It’s actually really good and I’m having fun researching what actually happened and what got dramatized for the show.

    I think my favorite Kareena performance will always be Geet from Jab We Met but I also really liked her in We Are Family.

    I also watched Rangeela for the first time and while it’s really good, I was still annoyed by Aamir in it. I kinda wish I could have seen this movie with Sridevi and Shahrukh as the leads instead.

  3. I was reading about upcoming movies today and those 2 rom-coms (both are digital releases) drew my attention:

    Atithi Bhooto Bhava
    Pratik Gandhi, Sharmin Segal (from Malaal) and Jackie Shroff as the ghost who asks Pratik to find his old love. Interesting, and I like all the actors. Will watch it when I subscribe again to Zee5

    Plan A Plan B
    Netflix rom-com with Riteish & Tamannaah.

    I also discovered Maddy has a new release this week – Dhokha: Round D Corner. The fact I never heard about this film , stupid title and the boring poster made me think it’s terrible, but the trailer surprised me and now I’m interested.

    • Atithi Bhooto Bhava does sound promising. I didn’t know the plot of it and I don’t know those two actors yet? Plan A Plan B looks good, too. I will be hoping that Tara vs Bilal has some romance in it since I do love Rane, but the John Abraham produced part doesn’t sell me yet.

      • Pratik Gandhi is gujarati actor who became famous thanks to his role in Scam 1992. I find his career fascinating because he started in theater plays and his first film was gay story – Emotionally Yours.
        Then he worked in a few gujarati movies (I saw one of them, Luv Ni Love Storys) and some flop hindi ones (eg. Loveyatri). In 2020 he made Scam 1992 and everybody loved him.
        Sharmin was the heroine in Malaal.

        I on the contrary have a soft spot for John producer, because he produced marathi movie Savita Damodar Paranjpe . I think it was supposed to be a serious film but it’s so hilarious. A respectable woman gets possesed and the ghost it’s kinda horny and wants to have sex with a family friend. The men involved (the husband and the friend), without telling the woman, decide they should give the ghost what she wants. So crazy, how one can not love it.

  4. I watched Ek Villain Returns and liked it.

    Light spoilers:
    For me it was much better than the first film because KRK and his nauseating mysogyny wasn’t there. Then there was Arjun looking super sexy and playing the bad boy (so hot!) and John being a little heartbreaking but mostly funny in his shy, introvert role. He was so miscasted! This role needed someone who can pass unnoticed, someone less beautiful and desiderable. Poor John was there like: I’m a poor cab driver, who wears a cap and never had a girlfriend. And I was like: dude, you’re John Abraham, we all saw you on that table in Paap.
    End spoilers.

    There also was a CGI tiger, and I like them in my movies. And a surprise – Tara Sutaria wasn’t terrible. I was shocked.
    It’s a perfect watchalong movie.

    I also watched Tovino Thomas movie Dear Friend. It’s about a group of friends who are chilling together, and then they aren’t chilling anymore, end of the movie. Malayalam folks really can make a movie with almost no story. In this no story they added few mentions of people having cancer, something very triggering for me so it wasn’t a pleasant watching. It’s on Netflix and you can all SKIP it.

      • Yes, he is thinner now, but he has tattoos and wears almost only sleevless shirts in this film.

      • LOL. I agree I like my Arjun a little “hammier” as well. In his earlier career, he was cute but his thinness didn’t seem natural on his frame (though I can date my obsession with him to how his thighs looked in those tight suits in Aurangzeb…never have I ever been into men’s legs in my life until then!). Now that he’s added muscle and been more intentional with his workouts it’s much more pleasing. I always think he’s hot (but I agree with him that he started to be too lazy about his appearance in the Mubarakan/Namastey England years). He looks great now and that’s one of the only redeeming parts of EVR. Just fast forward through the non-Arjun parts.

  6. Watching ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ and OMG IT IS GLORIOUS!!! Totally seem like pre-2014 Bollywood and honestly would be something we all would like. Filmikhudi! You were right! It is totally trolling and it is so wonderful doing it! It is a full-on mass entertainer but in the BEST WAY EVER!

  7. I saw Yes Boss with the sick 7 year old. No English subtitles could be found on YouTube this time, so we went with no subtitles and my memory. It worked, but I missed knowing FOR SURE (ish) what they were saying. I got to explain the concept of rape to the 7 year old, so it was educational too.

  8. Reading: I found Rabindranath Tagore’s The Home And The World in my little town’s library and I had to borow it. I’m abolutely in love with Nikhil, which is not very suprising because I also loved him in the modern adaptation Ghawre Bairey Aaj I saw 2 years ago. The Italian translation is beautiful, full of old words one rarely hear these days on the streets. I downloaded the polish version also to compare it, but unfortunately the translation a little too out-of-date.

    Obsessing: Yesterday I started thinking about Dia’s hindi remake. I was super confused because I didn’t remember if it released or not. Turns out it released in June but with almost no publicity. Like nothing. There are hardly any tweets about it and no reviews! The only people writing about this film were: Taran Adarsh (but he tweets about every movie), few fans and me. I don’t understand why. Dia was such a big hit in kannada, and great remake material. They spent money to make it just to release it secretly. And now it also not avaiable in streaming. The same with telugu remake Dear Meghna. Is this film cursed or what?

  9. I have not been able to stop listening to/watching Thaai Kelavi and now Thiruchitrambalam keeps climbing up my watch list.

    Right now I’m watching Moxie and it’s so far a really light feminist teenage film. I mean, aside from bullying and harassment, but when I say light I mean “it’s a really good intro to feminism for teens”

    Speaking of teens, it’s almost a month into the school year, and I feel like I still barely know my students? They’re mostly still quiet, which is surprising by this point, except for one class that made a really ridiculous BLM joke. No chances to reference Indian film yet, which I shouldn’t be disappointed about but I am.
