Sunday WatchAlong: Ponniyin Selvam 2! 7am Chicago Time!

Happy Sunday! I was up late at a show last night, so I am being very cozy and sleepy and coffee this morning. While also SO READY to watch this movie!!!!

At 7am Chicago time, I will put up a “and PLAY” comment and we will all comment along from there. And I will try to provide as much background as I can, although this movie has a lot of stuff I haven’t read yet.

  1. Awww I love Arunmozhi!!! Good for him to give it to Madhurantakam! Just wish he had done it a long time ago. Basically Vikram needed to die so much earlier. All this would have been sorted out.

    • Or, if Aish hadn’t been poisoning everything, it could have been a peaceful family discussion about making Madhurathakan next in line after Vikram, which is what is happening anyway.

        • Really, Prakash Raj could have solved all of this by arriving home and saying “So, I have a wife back in Sri Lanka, she’s humble birth and mute, what of it?”

          • Well in the movie he says he sent someone to get her and legitimately thought she had died. I know that is different from the book.

          • It’s the same in the book, only there’s some extra lines to make it clear he waited TWO YEARS, and sent a trusted friend to do it secretly. Instead of right away and just telling The People “yeah, so, I’ve got a wife already….”

          • Here it makes it seem like he sent someone right away and then got married after he heard that she had died. Hence he was shocked to see young Aish. It made sense to him that she could have been his daughter. Definitely very different.

          • He didn’t wait for two years to get married. If he did, Aditha would have been considerably younger than Nandini. What happened was that he wasn’t expecting to become the king. So he told her that he would come back.

When he reached the capital, he realised that the eldest uncle just died. The next uncle and heir, Gandharadithan, was childless. Gandharadithyan married Sembiyan Madevi around that time. Sudaran thought they would have a child and that child would be the next heir. But they wanted an adult who would be able to lead the army. The grandfather-king died soon and the new uncle-king Gandharadithyan declared that Sundaran would be his heir.

When he was crowned, Mandakini was there in the crowd. Mandakini went away on her own, realising their class difference. Sundaran and his friend Aniruddhar went to her home to enquire about her. He had no idea what he would do. There he heard that Mandakini commited suicide. Heartbroken, he returned, married and had children.

Mandakini didn’t die. Anirudhar paid a boatman to take her away and she caught the fantasy of Veera Pandyan, who raped her later. It was her children who were born two years after Sundara Cholan left her.

The novel was published in an era without word processors and hence there are slight mistakes in character details in different chapters.

  2. Love that Trisha-Karthi moment for being so silently understood between them, and for Trisha taking control again. But also angry we don’t get a “And the princess married Karthi” conclusion with all the other conclusions here!

  3. YAY! This movie confirms my theory that Vikram was the cause of all this chaos and needed to die!!! The commet that was headed to the Chola empire disspeared with the passing of Vikram!!!

  4. Definitely trying to clear things up in these script onscreen things, so they can end the movie-movie on the moment of giving up the thrown. But it’s MESSY.

  5. Okay, so baby swap thing that is cut and is SUPER IMPORTANT. In the book, Old Aish has a sister and brother who work at the temple by the palace. She comes to them, pregnant as the result of rape, and wants to give the baby up for adoption because….rape. Her sister is a midwife and is there when the Queen Mother gives birth to a seeming still born. Old Aish has newborn twins, a boy and a girl, so the midwife gives the boy to the Queen Mother which should be a great life for him and will make the Queen Mother happy. And the girl is given to a nice man who works for the temple. Old Aish keeps hanging around between the palace temple where she can spy on the royal family and her lost love, and Sri Lanka where she can be free to roam. But! The still born infant ends up living, and is raised by Old Aish’s sister, the midwife, as her devoted son. No one has bad intentions, but it just happens that Old Aish’s baby son is adopted into the royal family while the actual biological prince is raised by the loving midwife. Bio prince knows his mother is unmarried and his father is a mystery but is happy, he works in the temple growing flowers. He is also in love with his cousin, the Boat Girl, but she ignores him in preference for the Young Prince. Years later, Adopted Prince starts the rebellion and then, when he learns he is actually the bio son of Veera Pandyan, abandons the Chola kingdom to go live with the Pandyans. So Adopted Prince suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. But Bio Prince is AWESOME! Thus the ending, Bio Prince gets the crown because he deserves it through birth, and he is a kind wise nice person who SHOULD have the crown.

And I really REALLY want to know what happens with Boat Girl. Does she end up marrying Bio Prince who always loved her? Does she become Empress since her humble childhood love is now Emporer? Or does she become the Queen on the throne to Young Prince while his true love, Vanathi, is happy just being his wife with no status?

    • In the book Boat girl and Bio Prince gets married. Also as Bio Prince becomes King, she becomes Queen exactly like she wants. Also Boat Girl’s aunt is Old Aish and Boat Girl always hates that Old Aish didn’t become queen which is partially why she wants to become queen.

Also Vanathi dies before Arunmozhi becomes King so even her declaration that she’ll become his wife but not queen is true. In the Book, Kundavai tries to set up Vanathi and Arunmozhi together however Arunmozhi kind of ignores Vanathi. He’s actually quite open to boat girl being his wife other than it being inappropriate. As Vanathi is quite timid and faints a lot (which Arunmozhi thinks she’s doing for attention). Also Vanathi’s uncle also wants his niece to be queen. So Arunmozhi thinks everyone’s trying to control his life. However one day Vanathi and Boat Girl are having a fight, and Boat Girl says that you just want him for his crown which is where she proclaims her line. That’s also when Arunmozhi notices her and starts caring about her. They don’t have too much of a romance in the book tho more just a love triangle.
