Woot, new Jawan song! And a new SRK love song, which is more precious than gold. Do we like it? Is it too edited? Are we missing something?
Nayanthara, his love interest, is sometimes called the “Female Superstar” of the south, has had movies based around her character, has been working for 20 years, all those great things. But does she have chemistry with SRK?
Does she come off as the right age for SRK?
Is SRK selling himself as a young man and are we buying it?

Chemistry definitely. Right age…as SRK has said female actors who are age appropriate are no longer acting. Not sure until we see the movie what age he is supposed to be. I love the song, the melody and the performances.

I really like the song but why is he wearing shades for so much of it?! Zinda banda I accepted as a vibe but this is a LOVE song, I want magic eyes the whole time!!

+1 this took away from the song and emotions so much for me too and I couldn’t tell exactly what it was until you mentioned it!!!

I agree, but it’s not a new thing. He was wearing shades for at least half of Gerua lol

I guess now I know why I didn’t like that song so much 😂. Eye opener literally and figuratively 😂

Random interesting thing I just learned on google, sunglasses are recommended for insomnia and manic episodes. They can help regulate your circadian rhythms. Maybe that’s the answer? Does SRK wear them now for long days filming in bright sunlight to calm himself?

Or maybe the eyes really give away age so it’s his way to come across younger?
Btw what did you think of the song???!!!??

Now I want to go back and see Pathaan songs to check for sunglasses

Shah Rukh in my favorite look, his sweet and loving romance, the passionate but tender chemistry, the flow of the melody, the stunning visuals, the smooth choreography… I can’t think of a single thing about this song that I don’t love. It lets me walk on the clouds. I think there are some intentional Pretty Woman vibes, too, which I also love. I drove home along the beach with the windows down and the song playing on repeat and it was just the perfect vibe.
I don’t mind them digitally de-ageing him a bit as long as they don’t overdo it like some of the ads do. What does bother me is them editing his nose. They have got to stop doing that.

Nothing bothers me in the song…and the shades are to protect (and whatever they protect is fine for me as it is fine for him 🙂 )
The story commands to make him younger as there is a past and a present in this movie…I like to imagine the story, so I think it’s the father of the Jawan in the first song (there celebration-in-jail song, here retro-love song), Nayantara is his then wife and the little girl will be the future Nayantara and Jawan’s sister who gets born (and raised?) in jail…and later, the dad reunites with his daughter Nayantara to put down the villain who killed his son (with the women army of the jail)… yah!!!

Vijay, too, has two different periodes of age…

I really enjoyed the song. Very impressed by the chemistry and Nayanthara is an age-appropriate 38…anyone under 35 really grosses me out with the 50 and older guys. And I think this is the rare time that the actress matched with SRK doesn’t need his star power to heighten her star power. Maybe her pan-Indian appeal but she’s a big star and actress in her own right. Very similar to the Mahira Khan pairing in Raees. Still wish we had got to see more of her in Indian productions.
Deepika and Anushka, for instance, needed his star power for their debut and 2nd film respectively, but now they are just a “comfortable” jodi and the age gap also isn’t too gross! I do respect SRK so much more in this respect than Salman and Akshay who keep chasing their romantic hero past with very questionable age gaps. Shahid and Hrithik are also in dangerous territory lately. I hope they both will be smart about who they sign movies with. Yet another thing I’ve always appreciated about Saif is that he hasn’t really done a film that I felt that the age gap was too much.

Well, now I’m gonna be obsessing about finding a Saif movie with a big age gap, just to prove you wrong.

Well, he’s not perfect…just better than most:) So he is opposite Sonakshi in Bullet Raja and I think Illeana and Kalki in Happy Endings (both of which I haven’t seen…Kalkie is older than I thought she was though), those were probably the worst. And that was a rough couple of years in his filmography anyway, but once he started taking better scripts and more age appropriate roles, he was fine again. Of course, Kareena in Tashaan, but she’s only 10 years younger. He’s only 52…he’s kind of in-between the three Khans and Ajay and Akshay and then the next cohort of Hrithik and Shahid and Abhishek…if I recall correctly. So the age gaps with him were never going to be as bad as with the other guys.
Oh, I should have included Ajay in the mix of creepy old guys with much younger women…he actually might be one of the worst offenders lately? He even did a film about it (so at least he’s in on the joke).
Wait, Abhishek might be an offender as well though because that Taapsee age gap in Manmarziyaan was pretty bad, but again it was at least kind of part of the plot.

If Abhishek-Taapsee age gap bothers you, you should probably avoid Dunki!

I realized after I wrote that that the age gap wasn’t as bad as I remembered, plus Manmarziyaan is probably in my top three Hindi romances of all time, so I don’t really mind it:)
I didn’t know that Taapsee was confirmed as the love interest? I was hoping it wasn’t a romantic pairing. Haven’t been paying close attention to the pre-release buzz on that one as I’m not a big fan of Hirani. I may be one of the few people who doesn’t like Munna Bhai, Sanju, or PK at all. I’ve seen them all, but I just don’t see the appeal. Setting aside the problematic worship and apologist narrative for Sanjay Dutt and the unwatchable performance of Aamir in PK (at least for me), I find his filmmaking and messaging patronizing. Three Idiots is the only one I find tolerable, but even there I don’t see why it’s considered one of the best films ever. Plus, Hirani has done terrible things to Anushka’s hair in two films and that’s the last straw:) But I’ll give him one more shot with Dunki since I do love those two in general.

Nothing’s confirmed but that’s the impression I got from the way it’s been reported and from Taapsee talking about what a big deal it is working with SRK.
I haven’t seen Sanju for the same reasons you mention. I think the Munnabhai series is my favorite of his.

I’ve been watching the song over and over and I like how it’s a true love song and Nayanthara’s attire is so pleasing without being revealing. That was my big gripe with besharam rang. This song is so so good and the shot where they hold hands towards the end of the song. *Melt*
Way more my kind of romance I suppose

On first watch I did not like it. I hated the super baggy cargo pants SRK dances in. He has SO MUCH MAKEUP on that it is hard to get past his attempts to look younger to even see if there is chemistry between the actors. But really it is the giant cargo pants that I can’t stand. He wore crazy clothes in Pathaan and I was fine, but I guess I draw the line at comically big cargo pants. And as for the song, I think I just am not a fan of Indian love songs. Not knowing what they are saying probably plays into that.

What are your answers to your questions?
I knew I would take to this song ever since I heard snippets from a leaked shoot and it didn’t disappoint. Why the random white couple though? This has also deepened my crush on Nayanthara, the part where she enacts being happy then sad is my favorite. She’s at the limit of the age gap I’m comfortable with. I don’t think anybody’s buying him as a young man anymore, the clean-shaven look is actually aging him more than some scruff would’ve. But they have a kid here so he’s not playing super young thankfully.

Did you think the kid kind of looks like Sanya? I wonder if it’s supposed to be a younger version of her.

I thought the song was fine. The video was hard to watch. Is it just makeup gone wrong? Is it just bad CGI? Why does Shah Rukh’s face look so weird in this song? I get that they are trying to make him look young, but he just looks like an old man with a lot of makeup. Hopefully, they fix it before the movie is released. It does look better when he has sunglasses on… I think.

I love the song and added it to my playlist, but I’m not a fan of the video. Her wardrobe is gorgeous, but I agree with others who pointed out about the sunglasses, and the effects are jarring. I did, though, see a fan video pointing out an overall vibe comparison to Pretty Woman from KHNH.

Aw, that was nice. I’m liking the songs from Jawan so far better than Pathaan, I think it’s the looser vibe. Agree with Nayanthara being a match for him in screen presence, that promises good things. He seems kind of relaxed and not trying too hard, but that one b&w shot is intense.

I just rewatched it, and yeah, loose! It feels like he is just having fun onscreen. Atlee has worked with the star Vijay a lot, which means he must make a fun set. That is, Vijay is big enough that he can pick and choose, so Atlee must be pleasant to work with.

I dig the dance style. It suits him and it looks fun, like you can picture people partying with these moves at a wedding.
For some reason Nayanthara’s dress with the neck nuzzle are giving me Kajol vibes.

This song is totally my vibe – “smooth jazz” or “yacht rock” with modern production values and updated instrumentation. It’s the song that Sade would have chosen as her debut Bollywood song to sing if she were to debut today. Golden hour by the water with friends nursing a champagne glass vibes.
Really love Nayathara’s wardrobe here. Talk about matching the woman with the clothes. Especially like the street clothes – midi pencil skirt with slit, short sleeve collared blouse. Also love the see-through-silhouette yellow dress and I totally want that single-sleeve midi-BD from the night scene.
Unlike most bollywood SRK romance songs, his chemistry with Nayathara here is kind of natural and unforced and sweet, instead of “desparately in love” which is the usual vibe of his songs and his movies. No kissing, he only kisses the side of her neck, but i guess neck-kissing used to be his go-to move in the 90s and 00s. Without seeing the movie, only guessing that it could be both characters’ stages in life, or the stage of their romance? If they’ve been a couple for a while, then their romance would be more lived-in like this. Or if she’s a single-mom (to the little girl in the video) then maybe SRK’s character will tread lightly instead of coming on strong. BTW I wonder if the new bollywood code for “acceptable age gap romance” is if the female character is a single/divorced/widowed mom? They’ve used it in a couple Akshay & Ajay movies now to pair them with younger actresses. Another thought is what the South Indian audience finds acceptable for its commercial leading ladies, esp ones who are married with kids IRL? maybe a restrained romantic performance, and elegantly-sexy clothes, is what Nayanthara’s audience expects of her now? Even in Bollywood, I think Alia in Rocky aur Rani is the first time I’ve ever seen a married-with-kids commercial leading actress in kissing scenes in a mainstream Bollywood film.
BTW good call that the kid might be Sanya Malhotra’s character as a child. That kid has the best head of hair I’ve seen in my life!

I think this kind of casual chemistry is more a feature of action movies in general. I remember Margaret had written something about the action genre allowing lead characters to be adults whereas in romances the leads mature after falling in love.
