Naina is flying to India! Which is scary and emotional but ultimately a good thing and I am sending lots and lots of thoughts and cares along with her in the plane.
As regular readers of the comments know, Naina is a semi-new DCIBer who found us after moving to a new city. This is her first time back to India since moving away, and her first time NOT visiting the people who called themselves her family but don’t deserve to be treated as family. And, her first time back to India for a Shahrukh Khan release date!
So many emotions there! Culture shock, guilt over culture shock because it should be your home country, identity discovery of who you are in this place without the people who used to be around you, sadness over the sort of visit this could have been but isn’t, excitement, joy, homecoming, Shahrukh, SO MUCH.
And I guess Naina, my wish for you, is that you feel EVERYTHING. Let yourself cry and laugh and just feel it ALL. Drink down every ounce of the experience and leave nothing behind. And then return home all filled up with everything and floating on a cloud.
And my promise to you is that DCIB is here. We are a website, but also (and more so) a community. We all know that it is easier to open up and talk about scary things on the internet in a safe space than it is sometimes out there in the world. We understand how important it is to have that safe space especially during transition times. No one here is going to judge you or say you are doing something wrong, we just want you to be “Naina” and be happy.
Okay, who else has a wish to send along? For a difficult emotional trip, for a fun adventure trip, for a “first time back in India in years” trip, whatever aspect you want!
Oh, and Naina, most of all, remember that in good times and bad, sad times and happy, Shahrukh is always there for you and his Mango is Frooti:

Love to Naina!

Naina – I hope you have a wonderful time in India. Looking forward to hearing about it when you get back. Oh! And you will have to let us know what it was like to watch Jawan in theaters in India!

Would you believe SRK and Jawan was one of the anchor points for me planning this trip now. In the absence of a blood family, SRK and fans are my family. I hope to watch it at least twice on the Thursday and Friday of opening week/weekend. Will be certain to report back!!

I had a feeling, Jawan factored into your equation. What a nice way to start your new relationship with India — with something old and comforting (ShahRukh) and also new and exciting (the 2 week ayurvedic ashram trip — I think that’s what you said but my apologies if I am misrepresenting it).

Yes I’ve been to the ayurvedic place before 😀 so it’s old and comfort all around but in a new engagement model – ie independent and not relying on family. ♥️
But yes the date was decided only after Jawan release dates became firm otherwise I was really struggling – only ayurveda felt drab and coming to Mumbai with no purpose felt tough with such a long flight and no guaranteed reward at the end. So grateful to SRK with multiple releases this year and thankfully none stupid like zero I hope

I am just seeing this at my stopover in Doha after the 15 hour flight. The check-in at SFO airport was terrible and I am never flying Qatar again after this trip, if I can help it.
I’m so moved by your post, and your accurate assessment of how this trip is for me. I teared up and felt seen and heard and supported and cared for.
Thank you Margaret for having DCIB as one of the places that I think of and call home and all the others here.
I did wear compression socks for 12 of my 15 hour flight and felt so much safer re: potential blood clots etc.
I have booked myself at least 3 tickets to Jawan on 7 & 8 Sep already. It is supposed to rain in Mumbai while I’m there and it shuts the city down somewhat so I wanted to give myself plenty of options.
My letter to SRK i already have an outline in my mind but will write it after arrival in Mumbai.
Thanks for all the thoughts, words, thoughtful words – I love you all and will be posting here as my trip progresses!!! ♥️🥰

I moved away from India in 2014 and visited every year more or less for five years. I lived in Australia until 2022 and then moved to SFO. My last trip in 2019 was a disastrous family trip in the string of many but i haven’t visited back since I set boundaries on my abusive family.
I’ve been very homesick. So yes this is a new chapter, creating my new relationship with India not related to family home. I have no friends there either. So I’ll be on my own and I’ve done a lot of planning to make sure I have space to be able to start this new journey, gently, gradually, while being kind to myself. ♥️

No luck in Spam, just a bunch of messages trying to get me to buy real estate in Bali. But you did give her lovely wishes a few weeks ago on the past when I asked for travel advice 🙂

I ended up going there twice. Met with SRK warriors fan club and got a Jawan t-shirt. The security guard said to send my letter using postal service to Mannat for it to be received and queued and eventually it may bubble up to SRK and he would read it then

Have a beautiful trip! My only thought is to be kind to your past self as you encounter her on on your trip. Trips home can be so tangled, compassion helps. Hope you get to eat lots of delicious food, and have an amazing movie experience!

Thank you. Yes I have so much space to be kind to myself, this is the plan for the whole trip. Thanks for your kind words and the reminder 🥰

Good luck Naina! So happy you got to at least see Mannat even if you couldn’t deliver your letter in person. It somewhat sounds like your trip is a whole plot in and of itself. I hope it has a happy ending.
