DCIB Book Club: Scarlett Pimpernel or Dracula????

Yes! It is book club time again! And I am suggesting two of my FAVORITE books. Which are also a bit old-fashioned and out of date and easy to find for cheap or free. All the best things!

Scarlett Pimpernel

Stan Lee calls him “the first character who could be called a Superhero”. While his day to day identity is mild and innocent, in secret he is brilliant and fearless and runs a whole team of people focused on rescuing innocents from the Reign of Terror during the French revolution. Even better, the book is written by a woman and from the perspective of his wife who understands both the aristocratic and plebian sides of the revolution and is torn in her loyalties. It’s super fun.

Dracula

I love love love Dracula! I used to read it every October. It’s super well-written, and also super feminist. The character of Mina Harker is intelligent and mature and contributes a lot to actually defeating Dracula. Dracula is creepy and scary as he should be. And Van Helsing is a wee bit nuts, as HE should be.

  3. Hmm, Dracula would be fun, too. Though of course I’m biased and prefer Carmilla among early vampire stories. Not really much of a horror fan.

But I do think there’s even more to discuss with the Scarlett Pimpernel.

  5. Scarlett Pimpernel, of course! For the sheer romance, butterflies and thrill of it all. I read with my mother’s copy — it was one of her favourites too. I haven’t read Dracula, is it a romance?

  7. I have both on my TBR shelf, so I might actually be up for joining this one. The PS read-along was just too ambitious for me!
