Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Run Errands and Do Laundry!

Happy Saturday! I just had some lovely soft-boiled eggs. And now I am waiting for my laundry to finish so I can go out and buy dog food. What a glorious Saturday!

Things to talk about!

Patricia Merry is so good about sending me the birthday list every month and I’ve been falling down on using it. But today is very important, BOMAN IRANI’S BIRTHDAY!!!! What do you think is Boman’s best performance?

I quite like him in Shirin To Farhad, of course. But I think his best acting performance is probably Don 1

Animal is getting panned?

As you know, I don’t usually read reviews, and I never read the whole social media buzz world. So I need y’all to help! Is Animal getting panned? Is the mass delusion of Ranbir as a Great Actor finally ending?

Eggs! Soft boiled, scrambled, fried, or hard? What is your preference?

I really like a soft boiled egg. I used to like scrambled best, but as I have aged into my thirties, I have changed to soft boiled. Although I get fried when I’m in a restaurant (it’s a special treat having someone else make them!). I only like hard boiled when it’s in something, like egg salad with crackers.

  1. I have seen some Animal reviews and all say that Ranbir was very good. Also Anil, Bobby and Rashmika (who was trolled after the trailer, but now everyone says she was great especially in the scene she was trolled for. For me it was obvious she was great. I’m glad they appreciated her at least now). Acting wise the film is good. Many people criticise the second half of the movie saying it’s much worse than the first half. And there is a looooot of violence and blood.

    • I think the movie itself is criticised because most people say it feels like at times SRV is giving a statement to people who criticised Arjun Reddy. The hype was huge so it makes sense why the film is getting criticised.

  4. There are polarizing opinions about both the film and Ranbir. The voices I tend to align with are mostly negative about them. Not surprising at all given that this is one director who has made his worldview pretty clear in interviews and it’s totally misogynistic, so I know I’ll never watch anything he makes. Good luck to you if you’re planning to go!

  5. Maybe I should do some laundry too. I’m spending time on Reddit this morning. Lol

In other news I had a good therapy session last week and feel like I’m on the road to recovery now. Able to relax in my body for the first time after 5+ weeks.

Saw the psychiatrist and she said I am having an acute stress reaction and recovery is important so it doesn’t turn into PTSD.

Still a couple of weeks off from work, hope I can go back after that.

  6. I like hard boiled eggs because they travel well. And if I really HARD boil it, they don’t need refrigeration for an extended period of time. Also, then it is easy to throw away the yoke which I only sometimes feel like eating.

But my absolute favorite is boiled in soup with the yoke still goey so that when I break it the broth gets a nice orange yokey color and the soup tastes extra good.

  7. I watched Sam Manekshaw and I really liked it especially Vicky Kaushal’s performance. However I think the biggest problem is they tried to deer away from the controversies and should’ve changed the release date. The filmmakers should’ve also made this film more based on action and tidied up the film. Its a really nice film though and a very pleasant watch though it does give more of the history lesson vibe. I also thought Sanya Malhotra was so nice but found Fatima Sana Shaikh miscast as Indira Gandhi as she lacked that presence which I’ve found Indira Gandhi had on the population.

      • Yes, I wish the casting director also thought the same thing. However I really liked the film the more I think about it. There’s this scene where Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub (Yahya Khan) who has to go to pakistan (partition) says To the Army while Vicky mutters To the Indian Army. They also show this nice progression of Sanya Malhotra adjusting to being an army wife and struggling with what she has to deal with.

      • I also think that people wanted this either to be Raazi or something like Uri which it wasn’t. Raazi is a character study which analyses what it means to be a spy while Uri is more a strategic war story. Should this movie have chosen its specialisation? Yes, a 100 times yes but a Raazi approach in my opinion wouldn’t have worked for this character because it’s a different person. Like in Raazi, Alia is sort of thrown in while Vicky (Sam) knew what he was getting into. Uri doesn’t work because the character isn’t like that. Maybe something like Gold or Shershaah?

  8. I’ve always had a pretty visceral reaction to eggs (mostly smell and the taste of the whites when they’re boiled?) so I tend to eat them either as omlettes or as scrambled eggs. Basically I love eggs when they’re presented in a way that my brain doesn’t have to remember they’re eggs 😂😂😂 They’re especially amazing in cakes and desserts etc, they give this added richness.

My favourite egg recipes include a spinach mushroom omlette that I usually season with some chili flakes, garlic and dried herbs, and this Parsi preparation called Akuri. Parsis love eggs and potatoes and this scrambled egg includes lightly fried potatoes too. It’s lovely.

My Twitter seems to be exploding with takes on Animal. I wouldn’t be watching it anyway – I like neither Ranbir nor gore…but I did catch a number of takes on it I think.

    • Hope you had a wonderful feast with your lovely soft boiled eggs Margaret! Forgot to mention that my reaction to eggs was pretty hilarious considering my brother is my polar opposite – he is CRAZY about eggs. Loves them in every way and form.

      • I’m seeing a number of reactions, many different ones.

        1. You have the very misogynistic fanboy/troll type responses – I’m guessing from male Ranbir or Vanga fans, or also people who are extremely anti-feminist. Basically the “oh were enjoying how tRIGGeRed the “wokes” and “feminists” are (God I hate the way we in India feel entitled to use that word, it’s not even ours to use…at least not in the way it’s used here).

        2. Some takes seem to be done in what the commentator may view as a spirit of objectivity and it seems to go several ways. Phrases that I find often in some of these include

        a. This is what you would expect from a Vanga film

        b. This is his answer to people who were so disgusted by his earlier work (eg. Kabir Singh et al), this is his way of getting a reaction and it worked.

        c. It was a dark movie and it worked as one.

        d. I see some bring up Hollywood films like Clockwork Orange and ask why there is so much acclaim for that.

I’m certain I saw more patterns among these responses but I don’t fully recall all of them. Might get back to this if I remember any more! A review I recall that was in this vein was by a popular YouTube review called Anmol Jamwal (Tried&RefusedProductions on YouTube).

        3. You also have reviews that mention they find the film repugnant and speak about how it emboldens more men the way KS did. Some do touch upon the aspect of the film (that it was probably made to mock critics of the other films of that genre or with that message) but condemns rather than praises or normalizes it. There was a lot of discussion, too, on the rightwing leanings the film seems to have as well and some of those posts went into a discussion on the way the RW views masculinity.

To be clear, this is only based on whatever I’ve seen on my Twitter feed atm.

  9. I also recently saw a couple scenes from Main Hoon Na and I did love Boman there! Also that scene in HNY where Shahrukh winds up having to tell the group that his dad committed suicide and Boman and Sonu are justifiably enraged 🤧 I’m not the biggest fan of the film but I have a real soft sport for that scene.

  10. I’ve decided not to watch Animal in the theater and give it my money and time. I was very intrigued by the trailer, but after hearing reviews by those I trust…I’m out and now even more convinced that this is Ranbir’s midlife crisis at least career wise…nothing has been a slam dunk for him in years even though he is trying new things.

    • I also was intrigued by the trailer, but after having seen some scenes and reading the reviews I think I would hate it and I feel Margaret also will be disappointed. If it’s not to late, don’t go Margaret. I think it’s one of the movies that will give you a headache.
