Happy Sunday! I am maybe actually feeling healthy, but I don’t want to jinx it. Spent yesterday sleeping and reading and eating and trying to let my body kick the infection, and it MAY have worked? Still have 5 days of antibiotics left and I won’t feel really safe until I finish them all.
Bhansali
Thank you adh1325 for alerting me to this! There’s a new Bhansali film announced with Alia, Vijay, and Ranbir and it’s rumored to be a remake of Sangam? Not sure how I feel about that.

Well, I know that I hate Ranbir, especially in Bhansali movies, so that’s a bummer. Sangam is SUCH a good classic story, if it is handled correctly. ”Correctly” meaning giving the female character the agency she deserves. It’s not about either of the men “winning” her, it’s about her making a choice and wanting that to be respected. The whole film revolves around her final speech where she takes control and tells them off for thinking it is all about them. That’s what makes it the best love triangle. Do I trust Bhansali to say “nah, there is no One True Love, it’s about the choices we make in life and others respecting them”? Or is he gonna ruin it by making it all about First Love True Love One Love?
Dharma Announcement
I think this is a stupid STUPID promotional idea. They are trying to get a discussion and speculation and buzz going before they do the full announcement, but instead they are just going to get everyone to hate and judge the thing before it is even announced. Should have avoided mentioning the cast at all, should have said something like “A new Dharma love story, what color will the poster be?”

And finally, Wizard of Oz! Today is the 85 anniversary of the release. I’m kind of curious, is this a movie that resonates with DCIBers? It doesn’t for me. I love the books, read all of them as a kid. But the movie was too surreal and strange for me, I preferred traditional musicals from the era with love at first sight and backstage storylines and all that. At the same time, I can understand why Oz is so big. Everything in it is so surreal, that it becomes timeless. You don’t realize you are watching something from the 1930s with a bunch of old vaudevillians, you are watching something from any time anywhere.

My thoughts:
Bhansali movie
I don’t like this cast AT ALL. I know, I know, when we first heard about Gangubai Kathiawadi, nobody believed Alia can pull it off, but she did (I guess, because I haven’t seen the movie, but heard good things), so maybe she will do it again. But I still remember how terribly miscast she was in Kalank and I really don’t see her in an “epic saga”.
Ranbir – I’m not a fan. Plus we all saw the terrible chemistry he had with his wife in Brahmastra.
Vicky – he’s ok, but not someone I wish I would see in SLB film
Bhansali is a very specific director, he knows what he wants and how to get it, so I think he knows what he is doing but I’m still not thrilled.
Dharma film:
I just don’t have words. Everything is wrong in this announcement. The worst is, of course “the N word”, but the rest is not better. The southern superstar and the loved actress are described in a few words and the N. actor in 5 lines! And what lines! Haven’t seen such ass-lickering text in a while. I’m sure a lot of people worked on this and the best they got is this annoying poster, while you came with a better idea in just few minutes. They will never learn that the less is better. And if the actor in question is Ibrahim Ali Khan, the half of the work is already done. The guy is beautiful, and a lot of women have already crush on him. Just use is looks. Don’t praise him with overblown words because it only make people more hostile.

The only thing that would justify the Dharma announcement would be if the director was doing something truly meta and mind-screwy. You know, if they’re really keeping things from the crew. Makes it all the more impossible to “guess all details”, though.

I’m only interested in the SLB bc of the rumored sangam connection but idk if SLB will have the same cynicism and sadness that Raj Kapoor had that made Sangam so riveting to me

I am a huge Vicky fan so I’m a little upset that he won’t really play the most famous role. I still believe he should be Vyjayanthimala instead. Plus he is having a big film “Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj” coming out so I don’t understand why he is doing this role and playing the second fiddle. But I do think he will come out more as the Ajay Devgan of the Bhansali universe.
I think it’s kind of an interesting idea as its a creative way to announce a film but the ‘N’ word is a bit annoying of a catchphrase to hear. Also the cast is very odd and makes no sense.
I really love Wizard of Oz because of the surrealism. Some of the old hollywood musicals feel just a little too musical to me but this has that strange oddness that makes the film work. It’s also the slight tinge of sadness throughout which makes the film work for me.
Also I watched Animal on Netflix. If anyone else has watched it, I would love to discuss as I HATED IT

If you wish to know the reaction this has invoked in people. Just see this comment to Rahul Desai’s review (which for once I completely agree with)
I think whoever wrote this review might be an idiot. I came here to read a critic’s take on this film, but now I understand why Sandeep is angry. They may have some experience in film reviewing, but this person should be banned FROM REVIEWING NEXT FILMS. Calling oneself a critic and not discussing other aspects of the film like cinematography, background music, or editing is unacceptable. I wouldn’t call this person a critic; they are shameless, have a low IQ, and VERY CASUAL WOKE PERSON. F U

The soundtrack is decent but the way it’s executed is terrible. Especially Arjun Vaily which is very oddly executed
