Monday (Tuesday) Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the First Week of February?

Happy Tuesday! Yesterday was the usual mad Monday dash, but today things have calmed down a little so I can actually write this post.

Here is where you can ask me anything from “what’s the weather like in Chicago?” to “are there any big releases coming up?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of new questions!

Now, question for you! One of my coworkers, as a fun Friday discussion question, asked for recommendations of music he wouldn’t know about to listen to. Tragically, I left early that day so I missed the question. But if I had been there, I would have to recommend something manageable (one album, one song, like that). What should I have suggested?

My first instinct is actually Gully Boy. That album is GOLD.

    • I think someone here told me that SRK is rumored to be filming something starting in March? Fingers crossed it’s a romance!

And man, I don’t know if there is another big release I am looking forward to! We were so spoiled with all the SRK films last year, and then even Fighter I was excited for because of the cast. But now, bleh, nothing really seems special. Is there something I should be looking forward to?

      • This weekend Shahid Kapoor & Kriti Sanon new film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya comes out (btw can somebody translate this title, because I’m very curious what it means). It looks fun and colorful + Kriti plays a robot + there is also Dharmendra.

In April Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (Akshay+Tiger) releases, but I don’t have high hopes for this one really. and in May Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD (even less hopes)

In the second half of the year Raid 2, Stree 2, Pushpa 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 are expected.

I’m waitng for Do Aur Do Pyaar (Vidya Balan, Ileana , Pratik Gandhi and Sendhil Ramamurthy, romantic comedy )

        • Hey Angie, long time!

Idk, one of the songs is catchy but the concept is kinda creeping me out so maybe I’ll see it if the reviews are good.

The only reason I have hopes for Kalki is because the director is Nag Ashwin who made Mahanati. But I agree, that the promos haven’t really been that promising.

Is Do Aur Do Pyaar supposed to come out this year? I saw an article about it and I’ve been excited since Ileana hasn’t been in a movie in ages!

          • Hello Niki, nice to see you again.

The concept is strange, but the scene from the trailer when Kriti asks: Is being a robot wrong? And Shahid in a sweet way says: No; convinced me.

Kalki – after Sahoo, Radhe Shyam and Adipurush I expect nothing from Prabhas really.

Do Aur Do Pyaar is supposed to release 29 March. Lets wait and see if it’s true.

          • Yeah, hopefully TBMAUJ is actually a good and fun rom-com that’s worth seeing in the theater.

Lol, no expectations from Prabhas on my end either. But Kalki is the only movie in his lineup I still have hopes for.

What did you think of Salaar? I didn’t like it much but I found it interesting because it felt like they were trying to hide Prabhas at times.

            Like

          • I haven’t seen Salaar because it doesn’t look like my type of film and I was also sure it will be bad. But really what happens with Prabhas? I have seen his old photo few days ago and couldn’t believe it’s the same guy. Why they smooth his face in every film now? Why he acts so badly? Why he almost doesn’t have dialogues in Salaar?

            Like

          • Idk how true it is but they say that he’s an alcoholic which is why his face has changed so much now. That and the effects of taking steroids to bulk up for Baahubali.

But yeah, his acting has gotten worse too which is harder to explain. Idk, it’s just sad to see him now.

I have a friend who’s a die hard fan so I ended up seeing Salaar for her. I didn’t like it much, it could have been fun but there was so much exposition and the editing made things so confusing.

          • Thanks for the warning! I saw it showed up on Netflix and was tempted, more for Prithviraj than Prabhas, but sounds like I should avoid it?

            Like

          • Overall, Salaar felt more like a setup movie for the sequel so I would say to avoid it until Part 2 comes out and then you can catch up then.

      • Hopefully it’s a romance! Other people sold Dunki to me as a romance but it wasn’t romantic enough for me. I really wanted to see more of Shahrukh and Taapsee together in that movie.

Tbh I completely lost touch in terms of Hindi releases unless a movie is like a month away. But Varun’s next Baby John is supposed to come out towards the end of May! It’s a remake of Theri which is being produced by Atlee and directed by one of his former assistants. I wasn’t really a fan of Theri but I’m curious how they’ll make a remake in Hindi now that Simmba also exists.

        • I saw the teaser yesterday and it blew my mind. I had no idea such movie is in making. I mean it’s such a strange mix of everything. Varun, in a very southern scene with Kathakali dancers, Keerthy and Wamiqa Gabbi!

          Like

          • Right! I wasn’t that excited about Varun doing a Theri remake but the teaser was very exciting. I didn’t expect the kathakali dancers aspect and I’m very curious about that since there isn’t anything like that in Theri. Also I feel like I haven’t heard Wamiqa Gabbi’s name in forever so that was an interesting casting.

      • He’s shooting a film where it’s a mini cameo/ extended appearance (similar to Dear Zindagi) with Suhana Khan in a Sujoy Ghosh directorial. I think it’ll be a mystery or a thriller. Somewhere along those lines.

  1. So, I had a question while watching Jubilee, and I expect I’ll have more as it goes along.

So, they show a scene with the (kind of) Ashok Kumar stand-in and the (kind of) Devika Rani stand in, in which they are filming a song by singing it live with a live orchestra as it’s being filmed. Then fake Himanshu Rai says to someone that he (fake Himanshu) wants to start using playing playback singers because then the actors will be able to move around the scene instead of standing still in one place for filming.

OK, I know that playback singing did not start with Ashok Kumar’s first film and this is a dramatic retelling. But is that really why it started? Wouldn’t all of the sound have been dubbed at that time anyway? So actors were basically playback singing for themselves?

    Like

    • I can answer this! Non synch sound came after talkies started. So all the dubbing, singing and dialogue, came later. Then when mics improved in the west we went back to mostly synch sound but Indian technology developed differently.

  3. I do not have an Indian movie question, but I do have a life question. My family has already kinda made the decision, but I am curious what others would do. What would you do if one child was given opportunities you could never give your other children? Would you keep the opportunities from the child because it wasn’t fair to their siblings? Is there any real way to mitigate for inequalities in child rearing?

The real situation is that the 15 year was able to go to DC on a class trip that was really expensive. And because he had a bad tour guide none of the other kids will go because it wasn’t worth the money. The 15 year old is going to DC AGAIN because the local congressman invited the H.S. marching band to march in a parade Memorial Day. We don’t know if such an invitation would ever come again to our town, so this is something else his siblings will not be able to do. Now the 15 year old is invited to go to El Salvador, his best friend (an only child) has a father who runs a coffee roasting business and heads to Central America every couple of years, so the family has invited the 15 year old (who speaks Spanish) to come along. It is extremely unlikely we would ever be able to take our other children to El Salvador.

Do you say “No, 15 year old you can’t go because your brothers can’t?” And assuming you let the 15 year old go (which we will), how can you possibly make it up to the other kids, recognizing that there are significant financial limitations, and time limitations as grandparents require more care. My mom is working on helping us make it up to others with something we wouldn’t normally be able to afford, but still the jealousy will be hard to work through.

    Like

    • Yes, the jealousy will be there for sure, but it’s not like you are giving/finding all those opportunities to your son. He was lucky. It’s something that happened. No letting him go would be far worse in my opinion, because he will nurse a grudge against his brothers and you. And what if later one of the youngers will get a chance to go somewhere? You can’t let him go, because it will only make the oldest one more angry and embittered. And there will be 2 guys who couldn’t enjoy their chances. I think it’s a nice lesson for the younger brothers, about taking the chance when it happens. And who knows maybe the congressman will invite the band again? We can never know.

      • Completely agree with you angie and I’m happy that you decided in favour of the opportunity, Genevieve 🙂

Missed chances which one could have taken will become a lifelong sour memory…

    • I think in the long run these things balance. There will be things your younger kids get to do that the oldest doesn’t, like maybe your library will start a really cool multi-media program for teens right when they are the right age and their older brother will miss out on that because he is too old. As a parent, I don’t think you have anything to beat yourself up about. You can’t control the world, you can just try to have each kid get the best they can for themselves individually.

Of course, as a kid I remember time being very black and white to me. This thing is happening NOW and I either need a promise that 100% the same thing will happen when I am that age, or else something equal. Being told “everyone’s lives are different, change is a constant, there will be things available to you in a few years when you are this age that will not be available to your brother” wouldn’t have really registered with me.

  4. Did you watch Koffee with Karan this season? My favorite eps were the Deepika-Ranveer and Saif-Sharmila ones. I liked Rani-Kajol (absolute chaos), Zeenat-Neetu (unexpectedly fun) and Kareena-Alia (mainly for Kareena).

Tragically, I don’t see any movies I can look forward to this year except the ones by Kareena (The Crew and Buckingham Murders). This woman is doing probably the most interesting work among all actors.

I also saw Sangam and it’s made me angrier than any movie in recent history. The discussion will be interesting! I’ll just say that it should have ended with the two men offing themselves.

    • I loved the episode with Ranveer and Dips! It was so deep. The Rani and Kajol episode made me feel as uncomfortable as Kajol looked. They spent all this time talking about how they were family but not close, glossing over the fact that Rani essentially had a better relationship with Kajol’s father than Kajol did. It was all an extremely uneffective tip toe around a giant elephant of a parental split that probably wasn’t so happy. And Kajol had to pretend that there was no reason for the lack of closeness and covered up what ever she was actually feeling with a fake boisterousness and I just wanted to throw a blanket over her so she could hide or sneak back home to the people who really loved her.

I didn’t see the other episodes you mentioned, but perhaps I will now.

      • Yeah that part was odd! But I thought they are all so close now (from what it appears) they must have hashed out these issues among themselves long back and Karan wouldn’t bring up this topic without prior consent. I don’t know why they didn’t prepare better.

If you’re not familiar with the older actresses, I don’t know if you’d get as much out of their episodes. But Sharmila is one of my absolute favorites, her personal life is very interesting, I like Saif who even on his own is a unique interviewee, so their mother-son dynamic was a treat to watch!

        • The most interesting thing I learnt was that Sharmila was the original choice to play Shabana’s role in Rocky Rani. I was happy because I always thought it would’ve been perfect due to her onscreen history with Dharmendra and the fact that she is Bengali. But she was diagnosed with cancer (came as a shock, but it seems like it’s all under control) hence couldn’t do it!
