Deepika Has A Pottery Barn Campaign!

My first thought when I got this email from Pottery Barn was “really? Deepika?” And then I clicked the link and went “oh yeah, this is very Deepika”. She’s very calm, right? Very beige (in a good way!)

My guess is, Pottery Barn had already decided to do Indian style embroidery and patterns on their new bedroom set. And then they got their ad company to give them a shortlist of Indian celebrities and Deepika was a good fit.

But, I also believe everything she is saying! Except perhaps for “I’ve always loved Pottery Barn”. But sure, she probably does like peaceful neutral colors in her bedroom and stuff. And it’s a very nice photo shoot.

What do y’all think?

    • Speaking as a non-NRI who is on the Pottery barn mailing list, it also came off as just a very classy Indian lady introducing nice new Indian designs. I think it would have worked for me even if I didn’t know Deepika at all, just gives that touch of class and desi-ness to their new collection. Someone beautiful and good on camera who can convince me that I could be that beautiful and classy if I also bought these sheets.

(however, I think the small touch of using actual real life Dips photos to advertise the frames, THAT only works for in the know desi audiences!)

  1. This popped up on my Instagram feed and I went right over to shop. And, yes, non NRI Americans (like me) love a good Ikat print and generally much of the ornamentation and design of the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia…just look at the Pottery Barn aesthetic from the past decades…tons of nods to design and pattern from those parts of the world. Before Pottery Barn there was also Pier 1 Imports and World Market now that really do have those design aesthetics in mind. Also Anthropologie, etc. I just found Good Earth India (an actual Indian brand that ships to the US which is definitely going to hurt my wallet!).

This, of course, isn’t the first major collab that Pottery Barn has done with an Indian superstar. Sabyasachi actually collaborated with them several years ago for a gorgeous line of bedding. It sold out fast and I only got one pillow sham! So finally just this year, I broke down and spent some money on Ebay to finally do up my bedroom in the Sabyasachi maharani pattern in brown and pinks. It’s really looking lovely and it’s been fun to accessorize with picture frames and knick knacks from TJMaxx and HomeGoods who also always carry lots of Indian inspired things.

    • In theory, your instagram could indicate an interest in India, but on the other hand you are a fellow non-desi and instagram knows that. So yes, this campaign is reaching the public!

  2. I like the embroidery, I HATE the colors. Beige and I have a hate hate relationship. I feel like these colors will be the green shag carpet of the 2020s.

    • OH! I was just watching a Househunters episode where someone referred to a “90s kitchen” and then described light wood cabinets and white counters. Blew my mind, because I still think of that as a “normal” kitchen.

      • 2010s kitchens are all about grey tile – it is a sad state of interior design when grey is the hip color. Perhaps I long for those green shag carpets.

        • I saw a thing saying the “dated” look now is white kitchen cabinets. Isn’t that just kitchens? Are white cabinets that specific to now?

          • The only white cabinets I knew of growing up were my grandmothers that were metal and from the 40s I think? So yeah, maybe white cabinets are specific to now?

But honestly I live in a place where people still have their little 1956 kitchen cubbyholes that were in the original house builds house, with no remodels. Okay not everyone, but still a fair number. My home has it’s interior panneling from 1957, that was seen as so bad that the first thing my mother in law asked me was what was I going to paint it, and NOW has become retro cool! So glad I didn’t get around to painting it 9 years ago!
