And it went well! I think? What do you think?
The Met Gala is this thing that is famous for really amazing fashion. And an interesting collection of attendees. It’s an unusual red carpet in that you get noticed for your clothes. Singer, actor, socialite, model, if you really pull out the stops on your look, you get the headlines.
Dips went, Priyanka goes almost every year, it’s not unknown to the Hindi film world. But this is the first time SRK has gone, and the biggest name they’ve gotten from India.
As an event, it kind of reminds me of when I used to go to board game meetups. It’s a social event, but it’s also about something. Like, there’s a central thing to do beyond just being there. Makes it a lot easier to break into the group as an outsider. SRK took the assignment seriously, got good clothes to wear, then left and flew home almost immediately. Very clear plan, did not involve anything outside the main focus.
The NY Times did a little interview with him which was also focused and clear. Very general statements about his fame, but got the point across. This person is a big deal, his choice to attend and what he wore matters.
So here’s the big question: what do we think of his look? The theme this year was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. It inspired a lot of very structured slightly exaggerated tailored clothes. SRK, I think, did okay. He used Sabyasachi, who went with a suit that was sort of a western take on a sherwani. And a ton of jewelry. Which felt like a nod to old school Indian royalty, when male rulers would wear heavy jewels. The tiger head cane and huge K necklace would be over the top elsewhere, but this is the Met gala, you are supposed to be over the top.
What do you think?

Given the MET Gala is quite ostetacious, I think he fit in. I assume he in not likely to show up anywhere else in that garb. I was stunned that no one knew who he is. Even in the interview floating on Insta and X, they clearly had no idea. Think this my be his last MET Gala…long way to go to be treated insignificantly.

It’s very clear he did this for his children and tbh I don’t like the attire very much. But then he’s got nothing to prove….

He knew full well no one would know who he was. He did it for Sabayashi ; the pics in the Indian press which make his fans happy; and he said his kids wanted him to. His fans were at the hotel; that is enough for him.

Not bad! More vampire than rapper maybe, not sure about the all black, but it hits the right just over the top style note. The jewelry is nice.
This year’s gala theme was US cultural context specific and maybe a little trickier to nail for foreign guests than one based on haute couture or abstract concepts as in past years.

I visited Sabyasachi’s showroom in Kolkata in March – so much gorgeousness – wedding lehengas/cholis and men’s lavish sherwani coats. I was kind of expecting something like that. I reckon SRK’s outfit was understated Sabyasachi but he still looked cool. So rude of the interviewers to not know who he is.
There is a tongue in cheek fashion reviewer – Fashion Critical – who referred to Kiara Advani as ‘this lass’. I put her right about the name. If she doesn’t mention SRK and Diljit in her second Met Gala post I have pics of them to put in the comments.

I liked what he wore, but not as much as Diljit’s outfit, which was full-on “I’m Punjabi; deal with it.” I guess that’s the only way to go if you’re going to wear a turban anyway, though. But, yeah, it was interesting to see Shah Rukh there and nice that he went so far for his kids.

I liked the outfit but I HATE the K necklace. He pulls it off because he’s Shahrukh. However the K necklace is egregious and should be never seen again.
