If you are like me, you have spent the past few years shaking your fist to the sky and saying “Farhan!  Stop wasting your life!” every time Farhan announces a new project that is not Don 3.  Well, the wait is over!  FINALLY!  He just announced that, once he finishes the script for Rock On 2, he will go back to Don.  Yaaaaaaay!

Of course, he’s just talking about writing the script, they still have to reassemble the cast, find a shooting schedule that works, make the thing, and then release it.  But at least we know it will exist sometime in the next 3 years!  Which is much better than “sometime between now and infinity”.

I’ll be curious about the cast, Priyanka and Farhan have made noises about her possibly not being part of the next film, partly because of the personal issues, but mostly because of her increasing commitment to her American stuff and her own production house.  But it’s hard to picture a Don film without “Roma”.  In the first, she was our main protagonist, the character we spent the most time with and who never lied to us.  In the second, she was the catalyst, the tension between Roma and Don drove the whole plot.

So, if they can’t make the scheduling work, I can see 3 ways they could go with this.

1. Just kill her off and make the whole thing a revenge film for Don.
2. Recast with some specious plastic surgery comment.
3. Never mention her and make it a film just about Don.

I think both 2 and 3 are terrrrrrible ideas.  2 could only work if they find someone with similar energy to Priyanka who also has chemistry with SRK.  And I just can’t think of someone off the top of my head.  Dips, maybe, but it would be a stretch to get people to accept her.  What I would love, but might be too crazy for anyone to accept, is if they said that Roma got plastic surgery in honor of her dead sister-in-law Kareena, and then they cast Kareena in the role.  Wouldn’t that be awesome?  She has the presence and acting abilities to pull it off, and it would sort of bring the trilogy full circle.

3, there is just no way it could work.  People are going to be wondering the whole time where Roma is, and if it is never addressed, it would be waaaaay to distracting.  Don’s whole character has been based on conflict with Roma!

1, I kind of love this idea!  Make it the final film, kill her in a big explosion at the beginning, have Don come out of peaceful retirement and go on a massive revenge spree against the bad guys who killed her, and then let him die as well and end the trilogy conclusively.

(although, I would also be happy with a totally loop Kareena recast with plastic surgery plot, as mentioned above.)
