Although it is Salman Day, and Ranveer’s Birthday, I thought I should acknowledge the “real” holiday with a post of my favorite religious songs. (Also, I am 95% sure all these songs are appropriate. But if a miss-translated a lyric or something, and one of them is more secular than religious, let me know right away so I can pull it out of a post where it doesn’t belong)
There is an excellent chance I am missing something, but so far as I can remember, there aren’t really any “Eid” songs in movies. That is, ones that are specifically and distinctively for Eid. But there are lots of lovely lovely songs from the whole tradition of Muslim musical art in South Asia, so I’m going to pull a few of my favorites to listen to today.
1. This song is guaranteed to make me cry. Like, when it comes on my ipod shuffle while I’m driving, I have to pull off the road for a bit. Partly because of the context in the film, but also because it is just so beautiful on its own.
2. This isn’t my favorite AR Rahman song from this post, but it is a pretty good one.
3. I can’t find visuals for this one, but it is so so pretty even without them.

4. Another one with no visuals that is just too pretty to skip. Plus, there’ll be a new version soon with different visuals and the same sound, so you can think of this as a neutral option, not making a choice between Hindi and Tamil.
5. And finally, my all time favorite song, another one that sometimes makes me pull over to the side of the road, but not because of anything about the film it’s in (although I like it fine), but just because the song itself is so so beautiful.
Well, those are all “religious” songs, but they are not “Eid” songs. I’m surprised this one, but I guess you haven’t the film it’s from yet, for which it can be considered a bit of a spoiler. But since you say you don’t mind that, here it is — an Eid song by Salman (I don’t know if your messaging system allows HTML, but I’ll try).

I meant to say I’m surprised that “you missed” this one…. Sigh, the perils of not having an edit function

Not to mention a too hasty finger on the “post” button. Sorry. So what I was trying to say was: I’m surprised that you missed this one, but I guess you haven’t seen the film it’s from yet, for which it can be considered a bit of a spoiler.

I haven’t seen the movie, because so far, it’s been a bit tricky to track it down with subtitles, but I am still working on it!
