Friday News Round-Up (Mostly Photos): Aamir’s Ears, Shahrukh and Ali, and Kabali Box Office

What happened to the scandals?  The nice juicy scandals?  Or even a new film announcement!  Or rumor!  I don’t know, it just felt like there used to be more news in these news round-ups.  Oh well, at least this one has some nice pictures.

A couple of days ago, news broke that Aamir would be “rapping” a song for Dangal.  And, because he is Aamir, he first set aside a few weeks to train, practice, and perfect his “rapping” abilities.  Along with Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya who wrote the song. Remember when he decided to tap dance for Dhoom 3?  And he spent 8 weeks dedicated to learning how, and at the end of it tap danced like someone who just spent 8 weeks learning how?  I have even LESS expectations of his rapping.  I don’t know, rapping just seems like something you can’t learn.  And it definitely doesn’t seem like something you can perfect.

But now we have some on set photos of him in his “rapping” outfit and a more important question arises. Is it possible his ears have gotten even larger and more sticky-outy over the years?

(Age 8)

(Age 24.  I think the key may be wearing his hair extra poofy to sort of fill the gap between head and ear)

There’s a photo bouncing around of Shahrukh too, but as we all know, he has just gotten better with age.  more importantly, it is a photo of him hanging out with the rest of the Dear Zindagi team.  Which means for the first time we get confirmation on the rest of the cast.  When both Ali Zafar and Kunal Kapoor are in a movie, you know there is a female director!  And man, do I approve!  Although, I don’t think I approve of Kunal’s facial hair and head-hair.  Makes his face look less beautiful somehow, which I didn’t think would be possible.  But Ali looks great!

Just a reminder of how Kunal usually looks.

And why I will love Ali Zafar for ever.  He wrote this himself!

Oh, and then finally, and no images for this, but international business times is reporting that Kabali opening day is the highest American opening day ever for an Indian film.  Of course, figures for the south industry are a little softer than for the Hindi industry, so I’m not calling them as set in stone just yet.  Especially since the figures are coming from the distributor himself.  But currently, the number being bandied about is $1,382,076 for the opening day, on 450 screens.  That screen count alone is almost unheard of! Dilwale only opened on 300.

Just a reminder, of course, that the total box office dollar count isn’t exactly a one-to-one with American or Hindi releases, because the ticket prices in America (and maybe elsewhere?  I don’t know) are so inflated for opening day southern films.  More than double what they are for Hindi films.  Which doesn’t mean that number should be halved or anything like that, it is just impressive in a different way, because even if fewer people actually saw the movie, those people were willing to pay A LOT of money!
