News Round-Up: Box Office, Vidya in US, and Hrithik Gets Hacked (again?)

It’s the Hrithik story that really delights me, and so long as I am writing about that, I thought I might as well hit some others.

Hrithik got hacked!  Again!!!  Bollywoodhungama reports that someone took over his facebook page, changed the photo and started a live feed.  The news spread, Hrithik’s team heard about it, and de-activated the page temporarily until they got it back.  And Hrithik put out a message,

“An enterprising individual managed to hack my page earlier in the day. However, the matter has been taken care of and the page is mine once more.- Hrithik.”

Now, here’s what makes me most curious, “the person changed Hrithik’s display photo and it seemed like a teenager was the hacker”.  What did he change the photo to?!?!?  And why did it make them so sure it was a teenager?  Short of a photo of himself (which is possible, but seems really stupid), what photo makes people go “aha!  Teenager!”  Something about not remembering 9/11?  Justin Bieber fanpics?  An ad for Acne treatments?

UPDATE: It was his picture!  Oh man, you can tell the hacker without even looking at the picture then, because only a teenager would be stupid enough to put up their own photo.

Also, of course, how bad is Hrithik’s password if he has now been hacked AGAIN?  That is, if you believe the Hrithik version that his entire Kangana relationship was created through hacking.  Or, if you don’t believe that and are fond of conspiracy theories, you could always argue they faked this hacking in order to lend credence to their story about the other hacking.

Global Box Office figures are out!  And Akira is doing….Not That Bad!!!  Not that great either.  71 screens in America, averaging $1,400 per screen.  About the same everywhere else, a little better in Australia and New Zealand, a little worse in Malaysia.  Okay, so if expectations were higher, I would call this a flop.  But expectations were fairly low going in, so this is, I don’t want to say a “win”, but more just sort of neutral.  It didn’t totally fail, which at this point is a win.  Actually, if the producers were the ones who spread those “low expectations” rumors, they were kind of brilliant.  Turned a break-even box office into a win in the public’s mind.

It’s doing slightly better than break-even in India.  5.15 crore opening day, 5.30 crore Saturday, 6.20 Sunday.  Which is pretty much standard, Sunday is always the biggest day of opening weekend.  But, what is notable is that it only went down to 3.4 crore on Monday.  That is a smaller dip than usual between the end of the weekend and the weekday.  If it manages to keep that very slight angle of decline through out the week, it could end up in a pretty decent position on Friday, when Baar Baar Dekho comes out and takes all the screens.

(ALL THE SCREENS!!!  Also, I think this might be my favorite song from the album.)

And finally, Vidya is in the US!  More importantly, she is in the US to film Kahaani 2.  That’s a disappointment!  One of my favorite parts of Kahaani 1 was how grounded it was in the Indian location.  On the other hand, early rumors say that Vidya will be playing the same character as she did in Kahaani, thus the return to the US as that is where her character came from.  I know, it is a sequel, I should have known she was playing the same character.  But in my defense, it is not unheard of for Indian “sequels” to really just be films with similar tones and stars (for instance, Khiladi).
