It’s Sarat’s birthday! Which is as good an excuse as any to put up a post with some of the pretty pretty songs from the movies based on his novels. (if you really want to party hearty, check out my 4 separate Devdas posts here, here, here, and here)
I give Sanjay Leela Bhansali a hard time, and his adaptation is the worst of them all, but he does make very very pretty songs.

(The emphasis on “Bachpan ki yaadein” just kills me! So beautiful!)
I give Anurag Kashyap a hard time too, but his adaptation is one of the best. And he had some really interesting songs. And it was the soundtrack that shot Amit Trivedi to fame, leading directly to this year’s Udta Punjab soundtrack which I LOVE.
(See, Bhansali? This is how you do a good dance sequence, and keep it under budget!)
Speaking of cheap and diegetic song sequences, I really like this one from the Bimal Roy Devdas. And not just because that little girl is so freaking cute.
Speaking of adorable children, I love the childhood romance in Parineeta. It’s kind of like Dev and Paro, but distinctly healthier.
And it culminates in an actual definite marriage and sex scene, unlike can’t-make-up-his-mind Dev! (at least, the film version does, pretty sure it is handled differently in the novel)
If these two novels of Sarat are the only ones you could find Hindi film adaptations for, then let me say that the Telugu industry has adapted a lot more of them, which I find surprising.

There’s a spoof on Devdas in the movie Haath Ki Safai (1974).Randhir Kapoor (dressed up as a sozzled Devdas) interrupts Hema’s dance-drama of Devdas.Hema and her friends try their best to truss him up and get rid of him but he keeps turning up in the stage. The song is Peene wale ko (Drunks only need an excuse to get drunk). The lyrics are funny.

I love it! And now I wish Hema had played Chandra at some point for real. She would have been so good at it!
