Kangana-Hrithik Update

I posted about them earlier today, but since then Hrithik’s camp has issued a statement saying the earlier story was fault.  Whew!  Such a rollar-coaster with these two!

Earlier the news came out that the police had given up on tracking down Kangana’s catfisher/Hrithik’s impersonator, and were officially closing the case.  Which doesn’t necessarily mean Hrithik was lying about being impersonated, but also doesn’t necessarily mean he was telling the truth.

Now, Hrithik’s legal team is hitting back, and hitting hard:

Media reports which suggest that the investigation into the Hrithik – Kangna emails is closed, are totally false. A section of the media in connivance with Ms. Ranaut’s lawyer have sought to disseminate this false information. The investigation in fact continues and Mr. Saxena (Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime) has informed Mr. Mahesh Jethmalani, Senior Counsel advising Mr. Roshan that “The case is not yet closed. Investigation is still going on.” It is categorically asserted that there is unimpeachable evidence to suggest that there was no relationship of any kind between Mr. Roshan and Ms. Ranaut and that Ms. Ranaut persistently hounded Mr. Roshan on emails with the intention to entice him into a relationship – See more at: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/bollywood/hrithik-vs-kangna-reports-case-closing-false-says-hrithiks-team/#sthash.b7i36VBN.dpuf

Oooo!  “entice him into a relationship”!!!!  Strong words!!!  So, I’m picturing something like this:

  1. So Hrithik Roshan was really the reason I became a fan of Hindi films…my first movie was Jodhaa Akhbar, then Dhoom 2, then Mujhse Dosti Karoge. The way that his career has gone in the last few years is fascinating to me…the personal issues have certainly hurt his image, but I am a strong believer that he’s too picky with his films and he ends up picking far too many of his father’s projects (yes the Krrish series was very popular but Kites was a hot mess) and he seems to still rely on his father for career guidance. I’m hoping Kaabil is a hit for him, more because I still want him to get offered movies like ZNMD, Agneepath, and even Bang Bang-type slick masala films. I’m not particularly excited about Kaabil because I don’t like it when he overacts in the lighter moments of his films and the first half of the new film looks a little too precious. Perhaps the second half action sequences will redeem it.

And both Hrithik and Kangana look bad in this situation, but Kangana seems to be coming out ahead in the media game so far.

    • Years and years ago, I was hanging out at one of my favorite DVD stores, and this white woman came in and started talking to the guy behind the counter about Hrithik. She’d seen one of his movies, maybe K3G? Anyway, she was wondering if maybe possibly they had another movie with him in it. So the guy gets out from behind the counter and walks her over to the shelf display of Hrithik Roshan movies, and she takes a second to process this entire wall of DVDs, and then says “I’ll take all of them.” Anyway, that probably wasn’t you (for one thing, this would have been before Jodhaa Akbhar had even come out), but it was the first thing that came to mind and I had to share the story!

I have a theory that Hrithik was the first of a new era of stars, and he is paying the price of breaking the way. Up until Hrithik, the new heroes had to make movie after movie after movie to even make a dent in the industry (for instance, Shahrukh in King Uncle). They got a chance to build relationships with and learn from every actor and director and producer in the industry, and none of their mistakes really mattered, because they always had another film coming out soon. And they learned all about acting and scripts and producing and everything else a star has to know, before they became super famous.

But then with the industrialization of the industry in 1999, and the growth of the internet and new media, suddenly movies got major massive releases, and stars were made overnight, and there was no hiding from failure. Or time to build up experience and connections before being noticed.

Now, people like Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor and the other new kids, they have a whole system of apprenticeship and carefully built image campaigns and slow growth before they are put in a major film and so on and so on. But poor Hrithik, he literally became a star overnight, and he never learned how to pick a script or build his image or even give an interview.

Thinking of it that way, I am kind of impressed by how much he has made of himself! He’s gotten to be quite the good actor, and he’s better at script picking than, for instance, Ranbir. But I am similarly debious about Kaabil. He does rely too much on his father’s opinions and it blinds him to flaws in scripts, the actress seems a bit weak (a big problem with Mahenjo Daro), and I am not terribly excited about the director either.

I am much more excited about rumors that he might be working with the Bang Bang director again, I looooooooooooove Bang Bang. Such a great happy movie!

      • Haha! No, not me, but a great story nevertheless and I must admit that I’ve introduced (and converted some) of my female friends to Hindi films solely based on Hrithik’s good looks and dancing skills. He will always be my favorite Indian actor for sentimental reasons and because some of his films and performances are iconic for me. I’m such a fangirl I made this silly fan video a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-hfLfxIEtw&t=56s I’ve never been really drawn in by his off-screen presence. He kind of lacks charisma off-screen (except the one time he made that joke about Preity and Jadoo on KWK).

I really like your take on his career, much more nuanced than my knee-jerk negative reaction to all of the Roshan father-son projects (they’re all embarrassing at some level in my eyes). I will never understand the appeal of the Krrish character…he’s the most vacuous and silly superhero ever created.

I also think Shahid Kapoor, who was another early favorite for me, is a bridge kind of actor (debuting just 3 years after Hrithik), but maybe he benefitted from a more fully formed modern media machine and a career that was a bit of a slow burn for a while (not overnight stardom for sure). And at least when he’s worked with his father the results were honorable (if not wholly successful…I kind of like Mausam) or charmingly weird (Shaandaar). It’s weird to me when Shahid is lumped in with Ranbir and Ranveer. I think of him as Hrithik’s contemporary.

If Hrithik does another film with the Bang Bang director I will be so happy, too! Mohenjo Daro was awful. I do believe it could have been a better film if the cast were completely different. Honestly, I think if they had to pick a middle-aged guy to play innocent wonder Salman Khan could have done the role more believably and I never thought I’d prefer Salman over Hrithik. I think Hrithik has to be extra careful about playing characters closer to his actual age because I don’t think he’s aging that well:( and when the Khans do it the audience has built up a tolerance for their antics in that area.

        • That video was so impressive! Krazzy 4 and ad campaigns and Luck By Chance! Those are deep cuts. Plus, very nice editing. My next fanvid post, don’t be surprised to see it included 🙂

Oh, you are so right, the Mohenjo Daro character was all wrong for Hrithik! From the trailers I was thinking he was some kind of traveling adventurer or spy or something, which would have worked much better. Innocent farm boy just made no sense.
