News Round-Up: Aditya, Varun, Varun, and Shahrukh

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, which has allowed the news stories to build and build to the point where I have to deal with all of them at once.  Or at least, all the ones that interest me (no, I am not going to touch Tamil politics with a ten-foot pole.  Although my Iruvar review is getting all kinds of hits right now!)

First, OK Jaanu news!  I am still very doubtful as to whether this film will work.  But I am kind of interested in the news that Rahman will be remixing one of his own songs for it.  Is this the first time he has done that?  Not counting “Vande Mataram”?

So, news has it that he will be remixing “Hamma Hamma” from Bombay.  Huh!  I guess that particular song/moment would match the tone of OK Jaanu/OK Kanmani, but the rest of the film really really doesn’t.  I will have to be firmly not reminded of Bombay even while hearing a song from it if I have any hope of enjoying OK Jaanu on its own merits.

Speaking of songs, Badrinath Ki Dulhania has now finished filming, and they are supposed to have a remix of “Tamma Tamma”.  I’m not familiar with “Tamma Tamma”, but the article says it is a Madhuri song, which makes me think it should NOT be redone.  Madhuri is Madhuri and everyone else is not, is my feeling.

Okay, now I’ve watched it.  And, while on the one hand Alia is no Madhuri, Varun is also no Sanjay.  And replacing Sanjay with Varun in a dance number might not be the worst thing in the world.  So I might be okay with this after all.

More Varun News!  Details leaked about Judwaa 2!  Well, “leaked”, pretty clearly teased out to keep interest going in the film.  Varun is playing a student in London.  Taapsee will be the London love interest, and Jacqueline the love interest in Bombay.  Oh, and it’s supposed to have an “entirely new plot”.  So, NOT based on The Comedy of Errors then?  Yeah, I’m guessing it still is.  And London-Varun and Bombay-Varun will have completely different personalities.  And then they will both end up in Bombay for some reason.  Oh!  Here’s something unexpected!  Salman and Karisma are confirmed to be making a cameo.  Yay!  I love Karisma onscreen!

And finally, Shahrukh news!  Well, not really “news” so much as a funny picture.  The Indian Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards were last night (I think?  Time zones confuse me).  Various people went and performed, various awards were won, everyone talked about how great kids are.  But the only reason I am reporting this is because this picture is HILARIOUS!  And I can’t even explain why!

  1. Connected to Raees poster release the director said that SRK knew right away which line was the reason he was cast: Baniye ka dimag aur miya bhai ki daring. I’m translating that as you be the brain and your brother will be the daring. Is that correct?

    • Not quite, because there is some slang in it. What I got from some native speakers, is that it is closer to “Brian of a [Gujurati Slang for Tricky Small Businessman, Think The Guy Who Cheats You on DVD Prices But Talks So Fast You Don’t Realize It Until You Walk Away], and daring of a [Indian slang for gangster with an implication of being Muslim]”

So basically, it’s someone who can combine the ruthless tough guy swagger of a gangster from a minority community, and the sharp wit and looking out for the angle of a crooked small businessman. Which is pretty perfect for Shahrukh! Great at business, but also sooooooper scary if you cross him.

I might still be missing some shadings there, if there is a native speaker who is up on Bombay/Gujurati slang, please correct me!

  2. You may not want to touch Tamil politics, but you might enjoy doing a retrospective of Jayalalitha’s film career. It spanned Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films, and maybe the odd Kannada one as well. Her debut film was an English one.

  3. A Twitter correspondent is translating it as “Mind of a business man, daring of a Pathan” which we can well see would appeal to Shah Rukh!!

    • I can definitely see the appeal! But I can’t see anything even close to “Pathan” in the original Hindi unless there is some shading to “miya” that I am missing. I know it is Muslim slang for “mine”, maybe it is specific to Pathan areas?

  4. I don’t know where you’ve gotten the part about one of the Judwaa 2 character’s being a rockstar from New York. All the articles I saw mention only that one character is a London based college student and the other character is in Mumbai.

    • Oh darn! I just double-checked, and it looks like I got confused between what they were describing about the original Judwaa and htis one. Oh well, when I have a chance I will correct myself. And until then, your comment will stand as monument to my foolishness.
