Have I mentioned before that the India-America time difference is THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD? It’s just come up again, because Karan Johar tweeted the first poster and first teaser for Badrinath Ki Dulhania about 20 minutes after I went to bed. EVIL!
It’s a fun teaser! Badrinath is promoted as part of a “franchise” of Ki Dulhania movies. So we knew that Varun would be playing a character kind of like his character in Humpty Sharma, but different.
And that is, in fact, what is happening! In Humpty, he had this big city gloss of coolness, but at heart he was a big sappy sincere kind of dopey guy. In this one, there’s no big city gloss. Feels much more small town. But still kind of dopey and sincere. And also with a bit of a temper there, which we saw in Humpty too (the fight scene!).
There’s also a poster! Which has Alia in it, so we get to see her personality as well. At least a little. That’s my big concern, the first teaser is so Varun focused, I don’t want it to turn into all-Varun, all the time. I like Alia, plus the best part of the original was watching them growing together.
But this poster looks good! Alia is dominating it, Varun is much much smaller. Only concern left, a Holi release? Really? But, no one wants to go to the movies on Holi! On the other hand, a nice month before Bahubaali 2 comes out, Dharma’s other big film of the spring. So it should have a nice long open run.
I’m so excited for this movie!! I love the chemistry of the Varun and Alia together.

Yes! I can’t wait to get more info on Alia’s character, I am sure it will be a similar “seemingly different but actually the same under the skin” kind of heroine to fit with Varun.

That’s a really great looking poster. I’m excited to see what the trailer reveals in a few days. It doesn’t seem like there’s much coming out in February (Rangoon I guess, but I’ll never be able to drag my wife to that) so I’m really looking forward to this one!

Yeah, Spring is always the duldrums of movie releases. No big holidays (except for Valentine’s, and even that is more urban and youth focused than family), and the IPL season gets going. Cricket takes a lot of eyes away from movies, and it also takes a lot of movie stars away from promotions and filming because they have to cheer on their teams. Part of the reason Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was so exciting (besides being the first blockbuster rom-com in a long time, and Ranbir’s first major hit) is that it came out in the Spring, bucking the standard release wisdom.
The flipside is, since the Khans and the other big releases like to hold off until the holiday season, you can have Spring all to yourself if you think you might have a sleeper hit on your hands, like Badrinath. Or, if you think you might have a cross-over hit. Bahubaali came out during Ramadan, when no big Hindi films come out, which meant the theaters that usually showed mainstream Hindi suddenly had screens available to try out a regional option. Same effect is probably going to come up with the April release for Bahubaali 2.

Have you heard if Anushka’s new movie Phillauri is still coming out in March or did that get pushed back? I had it marked down as March 24 but I haven’t heard any news in ages.

I just did a quick google. It looks like the latest news is about buzz over the rough cut of the film. So that’s still on track for March. And then trailer would be coming in about 2 weeks, song release, etc. But of course they could always decide to delay for whatever reason at this point, since they haven’t even put out an official poster (so far as I know) with a release date.

Didn’t Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani release around the time that IPL ended? That was around the same time that Housefull 3 released last year and that was considered a post-IPL release. Either way, it did do great business.
It’s really interesting that their aren’t a lot of big Hindi releases during IPL season because a lot of Telugu big budget movies target the summer (in India which is like April to May). This is why Baahubali 2 is coming out in April. Baahubali was also supposed to come out in May but VFX delays pushed it July.
I’m kind of concerned about Badrinath Ki Dulhania’s release date because apparently that the week of March 10 is supposed to be exams week. And the main audience for this movie is going to be youth and families.

I just checked my memory, and you are right! Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani came out May 31st, so right after IPL. A much better time than March.
Badrinath is a Dharma release, right? I wonder if they are avoiding their own Bahubaali and so landed in March? Because any time in April and Bahubaali will cut down on a long word of mouth type run (which is what Badrinath probably needs to thrive), and any time in May and all the screens will still have Bahubaali going.

Baahubali’s coming out on April 28th, so I was surprised why Badrinath couldn’t selected something like March 17th or 24th since it was the first to announce a date. Oh yeah, I just remembered that Jagga Jasoos is coming out on April 7th and I think Dharma is associated with Jagga too.

Oh dear, the downside of Dharma having its finger in so many pies! No competitive release dates with their other films. Although, if you are only interested in dharma-type films, it does make life easy.

I am so excited for Badrinath Ki Dulhania I can’t even explain! Badri looks so cute!!! And you were right about Badri being from a small town, he’s supposed to be from Jhansi which is in Uttar Pradesh. They also shot the movie in Rajasthan and Singapore along with Uttar Pradesh.

Is that Jhansi as in “Rani of”? Because if so, that HAS to be part of it, right? At least a comment about how he likes strong women because he is from Jhansi?

Yeah, that’s what it looks like. Jhansi (the city) was the capital of Jhansi (the state) which was ruled by Lakshmibai (Rani of Jhansi).
