This seems as fun, and slightly more interesting, than yet another songs video post, right? Since apparently all the news in the world came out yesterday and there is nothing new today. Anyway, I have new videos and photos!
Yes, I am still not in love with this dog. This is doting interest is just how I am with dogs. Any dog. I get this great little endorphin rush just at the doggie smell in my apartment. Just think how incredibly in love I will be once I finally have a dog I actually like!
Dog continues to be sick and zonked out on pain drugs. But, as I said, the bonus is that she gets to have her pills in peanut butter, which both of us find very amusing, her to eat and me to watch her eat.
But mostly she is a lot less perky. It’s essentially a lot of laying on the couch perfectly still to the point that I have to keep a hand on her to reassure me she is breathing.
Interspersed with occasionally looking up and seeming mildly interested in the world like this:
And then back to sleep.
She’s got 5 more days of pain pills, then 21 days after that of anti-bacterials and anti-biotics. And then I give her back to the shelter, all perky and healthy, to be adopted by a nice doting spinster lady. Who isn’t me (although I am also a nice doting spinster lady).

Sleeping is very good…dogs are really reasonable, they know that sleeping helps them to get better…and as she trusts you…like someone who feels that there is no need to struggle for sympathy 🙂
I think you are with dogs like you may be with kids: inherently gentle, but only attached to a chosen one 🙂

Yes, tragically, since I have to get a small sized dog, the short legs seem to come with the territory. But it’s all about how the dog is put together, some of them don’t feel as small somehow as others. I’ll have to do a lot of meet and greets before I decide.
And yes, all children and dogs love me because I don’t scare them and I am so kind. But I don’t love all of them equally. Okay, maybe kids. I would be hard put to think of a “favorite” in my Sunday School class. Even the boy who just will not sit down and listen has his charms.

Dogs with really small legs freak me out. So do small sized dogs. There’s nothing meaner than a small, older dog.
Bigger dogs, on the other hand, are infinitely entertaining!

Landlords are insane!!!! Every landlord wants you to get a small dog, thinking they will cause less damage. But of course doggy people know that small dogs are more likely to be hysterical and make a lot of noise and chew things and just generally be hard in an apartment. What a landlord should want is a big low energy happy dog that will just lay there and sleep all day. The leases should say “nothing under 25 pounds” instead of “nothing over”.
I keep visiting shelters and seeing this big old dogs that just lounge around all relaxed, and little energetic yippy dogs, and what I want is the big old dog. But nooooooooooooo, landlord says little energetic yippy dog.

Maybe! Anyway, it’s why I’m not so worried about this doggie getting adopted, under 25 pounds dogs who aren’t chihuahuas get snapped up around the city, because that’s what everyone wants (no one wants a chihuahua)

I think the trick is to check out the paws. If it has spindly, tiny Chihuahua paws — then no good. If it has solid Labrador paws, even on a small dog, then OK.

You may be on to something. I don’t know what is up with Current Dog’s paws, but something is wrong. Since it got cold and snowy, she just cannot handle being outside, she starts shaking with pain as soon as her feet hit the ground. I have hope that it is just her sore muscles from her shots acting up once they get cold, but if this keeps up even after she is recovered, I may need to get those little dog booties that I always make fun of.

I judge dogs who wear coats SO MUCH! Our family dogs never needed them, the first was a border collie who was more likely to struggle with being overheated in the summer than too cold in winter, and the second was an ex-street dog who could handle pretty much anything (she didn’t love the cold, but she could handle it). Another thing to look for in my ultimate dog, a hardy breed that can handle cold weather.
This poor doggie got a shot right in her hip muscle, and I think the cold snow is shooting right up her leg into the hip and exacerbating the muscle. She starts limping real bad after about 4 steps and keeping her leg entirely off the ground. And then as soon as I get her back inside, she is all perky (ish) again. But I have also seen dogs who wear booties in the winter in the city because of salt on the sidewalk. It helps the snow melt, but it goes right into their sensitive foot pads and hurts them.
Of course, the solution is to get a tough dog who can handle salt in her foot pads and all the rest of it. Or just wait for this dog to get over her muscle aches.

You would so love Tibetan Mastiffs! My Mausi had one named Pogo who was so gentle that someone stole him!!
The next one was also called Pogo but Mausi was so scared of losing another one to the thieves that they didn’t let him go out the gate much and they had a marbled courtyard and the poor dog grew up with slightly crooked legs and he couldn’t control his gallop so it took him like a good minute of galloping in place to get going and then he needed to do a cartoon style screeching stop to avoid crashing into things.
Mausi left him in the care of one of her husband’s guards who took him to his village and he died after a brutal fight with the village dogs 😔
He does have a son there though and one from his first litter with Mausi’s other dog is with my other Mausi.
I wish he could have lived with us.

Oh my gosh, they’re HUGE!!!!! I imprinted on our border collie, so in my mind that is what a “real” dog is supposed to look like. So, big and fluffy with soft eyes and around 40 pounds. And also insanely intelligent and loyal and protective. Which is bad, because those are terrible traits for a city dog, the intelligent and loyal and protective. Although my parents would probably love it, if I got a dog like our border collie they would never worry again about me living alone. This little doggie, totally useless in terms of protection.

They look really bad on Google but IRL they’re actually just a whole lot of fluff on a medium-big frame.
My bhutia sheepdog (also part wolf according to a government vet) is around the same size as your border collie would have been. It really is rare to find a dog in that exact size with that exact kind of medium fur and indoor/outdoor personality.

Everyone should just get border collies! They are insanely smart and insanely fluffy and will love you to their dying breath, and be super vicious to any threat (and be smart enough to accurate assess a threat)
Okay, they will also get super bored if they are locked up all day, and may try to kill the mailman (because he is a mature adult entering your territory and therefore clearly a threat), and be very sad and lonely if there is no one around from their “pack” (which is why I’m not even considering a border collie for me), but otherwise great!

Oh yeah, border collie is the way to go. Our dog got loose once while we were gone, and all she did was go from the backyard to the front and try to kill the mailman. Didn’t even occur to her to run away, was just an opportunity of finally defending her territory as it was meant to be defended without us foolish humans interfering (the mailman had to pepper spray her, poor little doggie).
Also, look at the little puppy!

My family’s fave dogs are the ones who look like they’ve been put together by committee. When we we adopted our pup, she had short legs, a short neck, a relatively bigger head and HUGE ears (hence the name Bunny). She ended up growing into her head and ears, so has less of a committee-look. But we love her anyway!

I agree with you completely. You will know your dog when you meet it. Just have patience. A border collie would be perfect in other living circumstances! They are incredibly intelligent and loyal. I have my daughter’s Golden Retriever who would be a good apartment dog. Milli Trouble just eats and sleeps and cuddles. On the other hand, my German Shepherd, Shah Chalo, would go bonkers in an apartment. He’s extremely intelligent and as a working breed needs stimulation like the Border Collie does. You will know “your” dog when you meet it. Keep looking.

Thank you! for supporting my “keep looking” feeling. And for confirming that it really is about the personality of the dog rather than the breed. I was looking at a part Dachshund part Australian Cattle Dog, and was nervous about the working breed part of it. But since then I’ve talked to people who have a combo working/lap dog and it is really unpredictable which side will be uppermost.
