Isn’t it nice when there is a holiday (yes, it’s a real thing, all the stores are giving discounts) to give me a theme for my post? And what could be simpler than to match donuts with movie stars?
I’m gonna start with the donuts and then build the stars from there, because it is Donut Day after all, they should come first.
Boston Creme (my favorite)
So, almost too sweet, slightly bitter coating, and sugary soft creamy center. Hmm. I think Vidya Balan. Too rich, too sweet, but with that slight coating of bitter awareness that brings it all together.
Plain with sprinkles
Not the best donut. It looks good, but then you realize the sprinkles actually make it a little too sweet, and detract from the texture, and a plain glazed might be better. And so, my somewhat controversial choice! Don’t hate me, but sometimes I feel like Dulquer is trying too hard.
Chocolate with sprinkles
Now this is a good one! The sweetness and hardness of the sprinkles counteracts the soft slight bitterness of the frosting. So, someone soft and hard at the same time, in just the right proportion. Obviously Nivin, always right.
Chocolate chocolate (my Dad’s favorite)
Super strong! Super manly!!!! And a little bit dark. Gotta go with Maddy.
Jelly filled (my Grandpa’s favorite)
100% sweet, but with just enough flavor to make you love it. Juhi Chawla, all the way.
Maple (no one’s favorite, WHY DOES THIS EXIST???)
For some reason always sitting there on the shelf, and yet no one ever really wants it. Shraddha Kapoor. Need I say more?
Plain glazed
Classic, perfect, doesn’t have all the flash and sparkle of the sprinkles but is secretly the best one of all. For me, Kajol.
Chocolate frosted
The classic with just a wee bit more flare, more likely to be noticed. Rani Mukherjee!
Powdered sugar
Cheap, easy, likely to be mass-produced. Hmm. Well, I guess this:
Old-fashioned Buttermilk
A little imperfect, a little less factory produced, but ultimately with a much better taste on the inside. Nani!
Cinnamon Donut
Kind of like a powdered, kind of like a glazed, but then you bit into it, and it’s different! Hmmm, maybe Dips? Seems average pretty model type on the outside, reveals something spicy and interesting after a few bites.
And finally, maple-bacon long john! The Newest Donut
Oh, this is tricky! It’s been a while since there was a really interesting new face on the block. But then, this isn’t exactly “new”, long johns have been around for a while, just not combined with the fresh taste of Bacon. So…..Prabhas? Familiar and new at the same time. And also long.
So, what do you think about my choices?

Still don’t know Nani’s work, but I love all of these equations. Of course, the maple donut/Shraddha comparison is perfect!
Additional favorite donuts may be the powdered jelly – definitely Kangana (messy but sweet), glazed jelly (a la Krispy Kreme…not to be confused with plain jelly)- definitely Sonam (glossy and sweet), and finally the apple fritter – maybe Arjun Kapoor because they’re usually bulky AND tasty!

As a Pole, I can’t chose other than Jelly filled classic paczek (chocolate chocolate being close number 2). But instead of Juhi Chawla, for me it’s more Rajkumar Rao – he’s just like my doughnut, maybe not the most eye-catching in the shop, but once you taste it, you keep buying it, because it taste so good and makes you happy.
EDIT: Wait, maybe Nani should be jelly filled, and Rajkumar old-fashioned buttermilk? Yes, I like this version better.

Yes, Rajkumar is definitely old-fashioned buttermilk. Not the showiest or the best looking, doesn’t catch your eye immediately, you might even avoid it, but then you try one bite and realize how good it is.
What about Maddy as a Nutella paczek? Good in the classical sense, but also a little fresh and new and experimental.

Americans put bacon on everything!!!! It’s the new urban hip trend, bacon Brussels sprouts and cupcakes and milkshakes and all sorts of things. I saw a study years ago about how the particular combination of sweet and salty is an American thing, ketchup and french fries, eggrolls and sweet/sour sauce, and so on. I guess this is just an extension of that flavor pattern?
And hey, it sounds terrible, but so did an extremely expensive CGI filled Puranic adventure story in two parts, and that turned into Bahubali and we all loved it.

Hmm, Raj Kapoor. The Showman, but with substance to him too. Maybe a cake donut with special holiday frosting? Pumpkin for Halloween, bunny for Easter, and so on.
Dev in black-n-white, cream filled long john, completely irresistible. In color era, plain long john, still good but not quite the same.

Agree with your matches, and enjoying the additional ideas in comments. Shah Rukh is a hot, fresh elephant ear with cinnamon and sugar. Nothing better and goes great with black coffee. Elephant ears are fried dough, so I’m counting them as donuts. Now I’m hungry.

Elephant ear is an excellent choice. Although if we are expanding to just “fried dough” that also opens up jalabis, my favorites. Too strong and sweet for the first few bites, and then you begin to kind of like it and soon enough you are addicted-Shahrukh?

My favorite donut is from my hometown: beignets. It’s kind of puff pastry, but moist instead of flaky, always served hot, and when you eat it you’re covered in powdered sugar. Hmmm. Rekha? I don’t know.

Im assuming this is all based on the offscreen persona? I remember reading your suggestion of how Rajkumar Rao should accelerate his career by socialising a bit more & putting himself out there & working more. The ‘trying hard’ part is also what you mentioned as Varun Dhawan doing better than others. So I’m curious why Dulquer trying hard makes him all sprinkles-with-nothing-underneath? I would think an actor working in different languages & crossing over industries as diverse as the Indian ones is not an easy thing to do & requires some thought, hardwork & talent behind it. I can think of only Rana Daggubati as the other actor who has found that kind of footing in the South Indian & Hindi film industries at the same time.

No no, this time it is primarily onscreen. Feel free to disagree with me, but I find Dulquer often to be trying a little too hard onscreen. Putting in too many charming smiles, being slightly over the top in emotional moments, and so on. Putting on sprinkles when he doesn’t really need them.
