Filmilibrarian just said in a comment that she was trying to get back to listening to more music, and we had a nice exchange about the songs we like. And since I just put up my Ali Zafar post and need something to decompress with, and something to make us all a community even if we disagree, I thought it might be nice to have a little friendly “lets all enjoy stuff together” post.
I’ll start! Most of you know these songs already, because I put them up constantly, but here are 3 songs I really like that aren’t that recent or that big hits, so maybe you haven’t run across them.

And bonus, my favorite non-movie-but-not-really musical group, the acapella (sp?) group Penn Masala.

It’s the perfect example of the combination of rock and pop voices with traditional folk and classical singing that I love in the Coke Studio productions and Umair is just so fun to watch…besides being so gorgeous I love how he he dances around the mic, too.

That was my new obsession, and the older one is Mizhiyil Ninnum from Mayaanadhi. I don’t know for how many months I’ve been listening to this song , but I’m still not tired. Maybe because I always watch this malayalam lyrics video and it feels like new everytime 🙂

I listened to the Mayanaadhi soundtrack a lot when I first saw it, and I knew there was one song I really really liked, but I could never manage to track down which one it was. I bet it was this one.
And, since we are talking Malayalam, I don’t know why but I love love love “Dubai” from Jacobinte Swarigam.

Shahabaz Aman, who sings Mizhiyil Ninnum won Kerala State Film Award for Best Singer for that songs. And I cleary see why.
I can’t wait to see the movie, which I finally found, after 7 months of waiting. I’m so excited.
And yes, Dubai has this nice catchy melody which doesn’t leave the mind easily.

Choo Le Ne De from Oh Darling, Yeh Hai India, 1:01:00 in from the start. Not on YouTube apparently, but worth looking up on Netflix.
And if you are there, also check out, at 22:20 the title song, very sardonic and completely different in tone.

I was whining a while back about the plethora of unplugged/candlelight, etc. remakes of classic Hindi movie songs, but the reason I get so many of them in my Youtube playlist is that I listened to this about 4,000 times in row:

For the second one, The Internet tells me it is from an upcoming Tovino Thomas movie and the title means “chain smoker”. Tovino Thomas is super cute and tends to do kind of risky interesting films, so the film might live up to the song!

Yeah, from the video it looks like some sort of marital/romantic conflict coming from smoking. I’m guessing that’s not the whole movie since it sounds a bit thin.

Here are the most recent songs from Hindi films that I’ve had on repeat in the last couple of years…
“Just Go To Hell Dil” from Dear Zindagi (I just love Sunidhi Chauhan and just about everything she does)
“Hatt Mullah” from Jugni (I’m a sucker for Sufi singing mixed with modern beats or pop vocals)
“Gulaabo” from Shaandaar (love picturization so much and just the kind of odd and brassy old fashioned dance song that I love….I also have a tendency to just like a deep voice singing in Hindi or Urdu in general)
“Dhadaam Dhadaam” from Bombay Velvet (definitely in my top 10 Hindi film songs of all time! Neeti Mohan’s vocals and Anushka Sharma’s acting and the old-fashioned vocal jazz stylings)
“Khaki Banda” from Coke Studio Season 9 (yet another with my current favorite Umair Jaswal…much of the music on the show does have religious overtones…one of my other favorites is Allahu Akbar from Season 10 I think…this one has really great lyrics that people of all faiths can identify with)
Clearly I could go on and on…

Have we talked about Dhadaam Dhadaam before? I hated Bombay Velvet, but every time I watched it, it just comes alive during Dhadaam Dhadaam, becomes a whole different movie, I feel like I understand what Anurag was trying to convey and failing in the rest of the film (something about two young and foolish people who got caught up and chewed up by the city).

Also, how hot is Shahid Kapoor in the Gulaabo song? Sometimes I forget how charismatic he can be, especially when he is dancing and looks like he’s having fun and the fact that he is dancing with his real life sister in this one just makes me grin. Bollywood needs to give of more of these kinds of songs!

I’m still here, listening to all recommended songs. In particular I liked Hatt Mullah . Man’s voice is spectacular! It reminded me about Maahi from Raaz-The mistery continues, and now this song is on repeat in my home.

I’ve been listening to more Telugu songs lately but one Hindi song that I’ve listened to a lot recently is High Rated Gabru for obvious reasons.
Mellaga Mellaga is a beautiful song sung by one of my favorite singers, Chinmayi Sripada. It’s from an upcoming Telugu movie called Chi La Sow which was by directed by her husband Rahul Ravindran.
The entire album of Lover, a Telugu movie that came out recently, is really good! The movie is starring Raj Tarun and Riddhi Kumar. This is actually one of the first times that I’ve noticed a Telugu movie have an album that is made up of multiple composers. In the six song album, only Ankit Tiwari composed multiple songs.

Thank you! Really interested that Lover has multiple composers. Seems like that is almost the norm in Hindi now, interesting it is spreading to Telugu.

I totally forgot to mention Pilla Raa from RX100. I haven’t seen RX100 but I’ve seen it referred to as this year’s Arjun Reddy so I’m curious about the movie. But Pilla Raa is a really addicting song!

Is RX100 still playing near you? It was gone in a week at my local cinemark. It’s not playing at the closest Indian theater either so I assumed that it didn’t do well enough to last here. I am interested in checking it out once it comes online.

I think it is still playing. My theater usually keeps movies for 3-4 weeks, and in the final week just does an 11am show on Sat/Sunday. So if nothing else I should be able to catch it in the matinee next weekend.
