Donation Reminder/Request! Remember, Gratuity Means Gratitude!

It’s that time again, the time I remind everyone that it is a good thing to tip people who provide a service, even if that service is writing on the internet.

You give a dollar to the barista who makes you coffee every day, you can give a dollar once a month for the person who entertains and informs you every day.

Now, if reading that above statement made you feel guilty, there is a simple solution.  Just give me a dollar through one of the options below, and then you can stop feeling guilty.

The last two months, I did cute dog photos and a simple request for money.  Which I liked writing a lot more than long pleas for money, and which I am sure you enjoyed reading.  But, they do not in fact result in any money.  I got a few donations the first month, but that was in response to my car woes, not the donation post.  Last month, with the adorable photo of Dog Hazel in a blanket, I got ZIP!  ZERO!  No donations, no new patrons, nothing.  Those posts are much more pleasant to read which also, apparently, makes them easy to ignore.

So now I am back to the boring sturm and drang posts.  This is a reminder that I am a real person who is donating hours of labor and lots of money in order to entertain you.

If you appreciate what I do, then leave a tip. If you don’t tip, I will assume you don’t appreciate it and stop writing.  That’s how the world works, money goes in and product comes out.

Now, if reading the above made you feel scared, there is an easy solution. Just give me a dollar through one of the options below, and then you can stop feeling scared.

  1. I’m gonna buy your book even though I know way too much about Bollywood. I really enjoy your posts and I’d hate to see them go away 😦

  2. It’s a lovely book. I am almost done and I quite enjoyed it. I especially love the introductions to each chapter. If I may ask, why do you say that the book doesn’t generate any revenue for you? I got the Kindle version off Amazon and while it wasn’t as expensive as most books authored by foreign authors, it compares to what people in India would pay for say a Chetan Bhagat book (this is in no way an attempt to equate or compare your writing with his). You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to and I apologize if its intrusive, I’m just curious about the commerce and legalities

    • I got a $200 advance when it was first published. And then the first two years of sales were just paying down that advance. I got my first “real” payment a couple months ago. I get about $1 per book, less for foreign sales. So it doesn’t generate “no” money, as in I get $0 for it. But in general I make far more from donations to the blog (where $1 is the minimum amount) than I do from book sales.

I am getting a very decent fair amount per sale of book, no complaints there, my publisher is extremely generous. It’s that I make so few sales, so the book isn’t really a source of income for me. And if I was only interested in money, I would simply ask for direct donations and not bother funneling it through book sales.

And thank you so much for saying you enjoy it!

  3. I honestly did. It also made me notice references that I hadn’t before . Like how SRK in K3G comes home for Diwali foreshadowing that he is Ram, I never thought of that before. Also thank you for answering. I will definitely try and review it on goodreads and Amazon
