My big sister told me something last night which shocked me to the CORE and changed everything I always thought was true. I still haven’t recovered, so I think I need to do a post about it.
You know the phrase “veil of sorrow” or “veil of tears”? I have spent most of my life knowing and using this phrase. It makes complete sense, you are very sad and so it is like there is a veil of sadness separating you from the world. Or even more logical, you are crying a lot so your tears have created a veil down the front of your face.
But last night my sister told me it isn’t “veil” at all!!!!! It’s “Vale” as in “valley”!!!! This makes no sense! I had such a nice logical reason for the “veil” metaphor, and “vale” doesn’t work at all!
Who ever heard of a valley full of tears????? Or sorrow????

Yes, I refuse. I will continue to call it “veil” and wait for the rest of the world to catch up to my obvious logic. I mean, please! “Valley of Sorrow”? Unless it’s the end of Sholay, that just doesn’t work.
And “Valley of Tears”? Unless it’s the end of Satyam Shivan Sundaram when Zeenat cries out a flood, no way!

Have you read Pilgrim’s Progress? Vale of Tears makes me think of the Slough of Despair, etc. I read it once, mostly because of how often it’s mentioned in the Little House books. 🙂

The Slough of Despair probably isn’t referring to dead skin cells sloughing off all the despair of your body, is it? Like, I can’t go get a facial and ask them to remove the slough of Despair? But that makes so much sense!!!!!!! And now I really want to wash my face and get rid of all my slough of despair.
I considered reading Pilgrim’s Progress because of how often it is mentioned in the Nesbit books, and then I didn’t because it was boring. You are much better than me.

I will definitely ask for that kind of facial! My veil of tears has clearly left unattractive lines on my face that need to be removed by rubbing off the slough of despond.

Sorry to say Margaret but your big sister is right. On Psalm 84 “valley of tears” stands as a metaphor for life’s progression in sorrow.
On the catholic prayer “Salve Regina” Our Lady is thus invoked: “To you we cry out, the disgraced sons of Eve. To you we sigh, groaning and weeping in this valley of tears”
Having said that I think your interpretation has an immediate visual appeal and besides one has to remember that a language is a living body that evolves through time. Veil or Valley is a choice you are free to do.

For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why people on the Internet say “say my peace” but I realized finally it was confusion with “hold one’s peace” (and there are probably also people who say “hold my piece” although it looks ridiculous).
I was going to point out that you wouldn’t have to have this revelation if you had been raised Catholic, but The Newcomer beat me to it!

I have given up on understanding Internet People. There are so many abbreviations that I have just learned what they mean by usage and given up on actually knowing what they stand for. If that makes sense.
I did know Psalm 29 (ye though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death) and the song “You’ve got to walk that lonesome valley”. And yet, never made the connection! “Veil of tears” was clearly about clothes, not geography.

I think that both should exist (or better shouldn’t???)…the veil being appropriate for one person who’s crying an in sorrow and the vale(valley) when there are really MANY individuals whose tears or sorrows could fill a whole valley…
